Gold in the Lousal mine, Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portugal

Recent exploration boreholes in the Lousal Mine, located within the Portuguese sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) yielded marked concentrations in gold/electrum in a section of core consisting of banded metasediments with massive pyrite. Preliminary research indicates that the gold is associated with native bismuth and bismuthinite and is clearly late in the paragenetic sequence occurring in fine chalcopyrite (± covellite)-bismuthinite-gold filled veinlets within the dominant and more massive pyrite. The pale yellow gold grains are fine, seldom reaching more than 6 ..m in length and half of that in thickness. EPMA results indicate that silver concentrations in gold grains can be as high as 27 wt.%. The results show similarities with conclusions drawn from the IPB on the Spanish side where gold of Co-Bi geochemical association is found as electrum with abundant to common Co and Bi minerals. These associated with pyrite and/or chalcopyrite are characterized by an abundance of sedimentary facies and show that the gold association formed at high temperature (>300 °C) during the initial phases of massive sulphide formation

Recurrent solid ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus: A case report

Introduction. Ameloblastomas are clinically the most important type of odontogenic tumors. Solid or multicystic form most commonly affects mandible, it is highly aggressive and shows high rates of recurrence. The aim was to report aggressive behavior of a rare maxillary solid ameloblastoma, emphasizing the clinical, tomographic and histological aspects. Case Report. A young and asymptomatic patient, presenting a solid ameloblastoma initially located in the maxillary sinus with rapid spreading to the adjacent tissues, had early recurrence despite radical surgical approach. Conclusion. Multicystic or solid ameloblastoma has lower incidence in maxilla and extremely aggressive behavior, justifying careful follow-up of the patients

Germanium-rich chalcopyrite from the Barrigão remobilised vein deposit, Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portugal

Anomalously high germanium contents have been detected by means of whole-rock trace element analysis in remobilised vein type copper ores from the abandoned Barrigão mine, located in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, southern Portugal. The late-Variscan brecciated copper ores consist manly of chalcopyrite, with minor tennantite, rare pyrite and arsenopyrite. The ores, investigated for elements increasingly used in several thin-film and other semiconductor high-technology applications (e.g. indium, selenium, tellurium and germanium), show germanium contents up to 280 ppm, with an average of 61 ppm from 10 samples. Electron Probe Microanalysis of Barrigão ore samples revealed that germanium is contained in chalcopyrite, with a range of 0.1 to 0.4 wt% (0.23 wt% average). High germanium contents seem to be linked to "dirty" chalcopyrite phases, showing irregular patchy zoning under the microscope and on back-scattered electron images

Iliac artery false aneurysm twelve years after allograft nephrectomy

We report a case of a non-infected right external iliac artery false aneurysm. The patient was a 44 year-old woman on chronic peritoneal dialysis had had an allograft nephrectomy 12 years before and who presented with acute abdominal pain. Ultrasound and CT-scan showed a saccular aneurysm arising from the right external iliac artery. A large false aneurysm was identified during surgery, from donor arterial vessel remaining in situ after graft nephrectomy. Resection of the false aneurysm, with ligation of the right external iliac artery and interposition of a femorofemoral graft was successfully performed, with an uneventful post-operative recovery. False aneurysms after renal allograft nephrectomy are very rare. To our knowledge, this is the longest reported period of time between na nephrectomy and clinical evidence of a false aneurysm.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Objective: To relate knowledge, practice and barriers of diabetic foot self-care amongpeople with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, according to gender and education.Method: Analytical cross-sectional study with 102 users of 4 basic units in the inland of the state of Piauí, Brazil. Socioeconomic and clinical data were collected between December 2018 and July 2019. Descriptive analysis was performed with the use of the Chi-square test. Results: Women showed greater knowledge and practice of moisturizing (p5cm (p=0.001) and <5cm (p<0.001).Conclusion: It is hoped that this study will allow a new type of approach aimed to the improvement of diabetic foot self-care
