Out-of-equilibrium evolution of scalar fields in FRW cosmology: renormalization and numerical simulations
We present a renormalized computational framework for the evolution of a
self-interacting scalar field (inflaton) and its quantum fluctuations in an FRW
background geometry. We include a coupling of the field to the Ricci scalar
with a general coupling parameter . We take into account the classical and
quantum back reactions, i.e., we consider the the dynamical evolution of the
cosmic scale factor. We perform, in the one-loop and in the large-N
approximation, the renormalization of the equation of motion for the inflaton
field, and of its energy momentum tensor. Our formalism is based on a
perturbative expansion for the mode functions, and uses dimensional
regularization. The renormalization procedure is manifestly covariant and the
counter terms are independent of the initial state. Some shortcomings in the
renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor in an earlier publication are
corrected. We avoid the occurence of initial singularities by constructing a
suitable class of initial states. The formalism is implemented numerically and
we present some results for the evolution in the post-inflationary preheating
era.Comment: 44 pages, uses latexsym, 6 pages with 11 figures in a .ps fil
Nab: Measurement Principles, Apparatus and Uncertainties
The Nab collaboration will perform a precise measurement of 'a', the
electron-neutrino correlation parameter, and 'b', the Fierz interference term
in neutron beta decay, in the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the SNS,
using a novel electric/magnetic field spectrometer and detector design. The
experiment is aiming at the 10^{-3} accuracy level in (Delta a)/a, and will
provide an independent measurement of lambda = G_A/G_V, the ratio of
axial-vector to vector coupling constants of the nucleon. Nab also plans to
perform the first ever measurement of 'b' in neutron decay, which will provide
an independent limit on the tensor weak coupling.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, talk presented at the International

Destabilising Divergences in the NMSSM
The problem of destabilising divergences is discussed for singlet extensions
of the MSSM. It is shown that models which possess either gauged- symmetry
or target space duality at the Planck scale are able to circumvent this problem
whilst avoiding cosmological domain walls.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures requiring axodraw.sty, plain LaTeX, to appear in

Quantum corrections to the ground state energy of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate: A diffusion Monte Carlo calculation
The diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to describe a trapped atomic
Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature, fully quantum mechanically and
nonperturbatively. For low densities, [n(0): peak
density, a: s-wave scattering length], our calculations confirm that the exact
ground state energy for a sum of two-body interactions depends on only the
atomic physics parameter a, and no other details of the two-body model
potential. Corrections to the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii energy range from
being essentially negligible to about 20% for N=2-50 particles in the trap with
positive s-wave scattering length a=100-10000 a.u.. Our numerical calculations
confirm that inclusion of an additional effective potential term in the
mean-field equation, which accounts for quantum fluctuations [see e.g. E.
Braaten and A. Nieto, Phys. Rev. B 56}, 14745 (1997)], leads to a greatly
improved description of trapped Bose gases.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
From sets to functions: Three elementary examples
A sequence of binomial type is a basis for [x] satisfying a binomial-like identity, e.g. powers, rising and falling factorials. Given two sequences of binomial type, the authors describe a totally combinatorial way of finding the change of basis matrix: to each pair of sequences is associated a poset whose Whitney numbers of the 1st and 2nd kind give the entries of the matrix and its inverse.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24525/1/0000804.pd
The Centurion 18 telescope of the Wise Observatory
We describe the second telescope of the Wise Observatory, a 0.46-m Centurion
18 (C18) installed in 2005, which enhances significantly the observing
possibilities. The telescope operates from a small dome and is equipped with a
large-format CCD camera. In the last two years this telescope was intensively
used in a variety of monitoring projects.
The operation of the C18 is now automatic, requiring only start-up at the
beginning of a night and close-down at dawn. The observations are mostly
performed remotely from the Tel Aviv campus or even from the observer's home.
The entire facility was erected for a component cost of about 70k$ and a labor
investment of a total of one man-year.
We describe three types of projects undertaken with this new facility: the
measurement of asteroid light variability with the purpose of determining
physical parameters and binarity, the following-up of transiting extrasolar
planets, and the study of AGN variability. The successful implementation of the
C18 demonstrates the viability of small telescopes in an age of huge
light-collectors, provided the operation of such facilities is very efficient.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, some figures quality was degraded, accepted for

Precision Measurement of PArity Violation in Polarized Cold Neutron Capture on the Proton: the NPDGamma Experiment
The NPDGamma experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) is
dedicated to measure with high precision the parity violating asymmetry in the
emission after capture of spin polarized cold neutrons in
para-hydrogen. The measurement will determine unambiguously the weak
pion-nucleon-nucleon () coupling constant {\it f}Comment: Proceedings of the PANIC'05 Conference, Santa Fe, NM, USA, October

Donor states in modulation-doped Si/SiGe heterostructures
We present a unified approach for calculating the properties of shallow
donors inside or outside heterostructure quantum wells. The method allows us to
obtain not only the binding energies of all localized states of any symmetry,
but also the energy width of the resonant states which may appear when a
localized state becomes degenerate with the continuous quantum well subbands.
The approach is non-variational, and we are therefore also able to evaluate the
wave functions. This is used to calculate the optical absorption spectrum,
which is strongly non-isotropic due to the selection rules. The results
obtained from calculations for Si/SiGe quantum wells allow us to
present the general behavior of the impurity states, as the donor position is
varied from the center of the well to deep inside the barrier. The influence on
the donor ground state from both the central-cell effect and the strain arising
from the lattice mismatch is carefully considered.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Correlation Entropy of an Interacting Quantum Field and H-theorem for the O(N) Model
Following the paradigm of Boltzmann-BBGKY we propose a correlation entropy
(of the nth order) for an interacting quantum field, obtained by `slaving'
(truncation with causal factorization) of the higher (n+1 th) order correlation
functions in the Schwinger-Dyson system of equations. This renders an otherwise
closed system effectively open where dissipation arises. The concept of
correlation entropy is useful for addressing issues related to thermalization.
As a small yet important step in that direction we prove an H-theorem for the
correlation entropy of a quantum mechanical O(N) model with a Closed Time Path
Two Particle Irreducible Effective Action at the level of Next-to-Leading-Order
large N approximation. This model may be regarded as a field theory in
space dimensions.Comment: 22 page
