The Likely Impact of CAP-Reform on EU Positions in Cancun

    Get PDF
The June 26th 2003 EU Council Agreement on reform of the Common Agricultural Policy provides the basis for the EU’s negotiating position in the WTO Agreement on Agriculture negotiations. This paper looks at the outcome of the final CAP-reform agreement in the areas of: • decoupling and cross compliance; • modulation and rural development; • the major sectoral reforms agreed; • with reference to the initial European Commission proposals, the extent of the changes introduced in the final agreement, and the broad implications of these changes for EU positions in the WTO agricultural negotiations on export subsidies, market access and domestic support to agriculture. The paper then goes on to consider the implications for ACP countries in terms of the challenges this will generate at the Cancun WTO Ministerial. It concludes by proposing options for ACP governments to pursue at Cancun with the aim of maintaining some economic space for national and regional agricultural and agro-based industrial development, in the face of a reformed CAP and the liberalisation of agricultural markets that are implicit in the WTO process.A discussion pape

Re-visioning Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man for a Class of Urban Immigrant Youth

In this essay, I will explore Ralph Ellison’s 1952 classic novel, Invisible Man, as a text that has contemporary and relatable themes for a modern-day classroom of mostly urban youth. This essay is also a personal journey into how Ellison’s inventive approaches to form helped create a work that lends itself to contemporary reimagining. It asks the question, can Ellison’s interest in creating a living Afro-American literary tradition rooted in the lore of the ‘peasant’ or common folk have contemporary applications? How does Ellison’s belief that everyday folk expression has value hold up for today’s readers? I try to answer these questions through a combination of personal narrative, textual analysis, and, with the permission of my students, through samples of the work they created in class, in order to demonstrate the still relevant power of Ellison’s belief in first-person storytellin

Calogero-Vasiliev Oscillator in Dynamically Evolving Curved Spacetime

    Get PDF
In a recent work, the consequences of quantizing a real scalar field Φ\Phi according to generalized ``quon'' statistics in a dynamically evolving curved spacetime (~which, prior to some initial time and subsequent to some later time, is flat~) were considered. Here a similar calculation is performed; this time we quantize Φ\Phi via the Calogero-Vasiliev oscillator algebra, described by a real parameter ν>1/2\nu > -1/2. It is found that both conservation ( νν\nu \rightarrow \nu ) and anticonservation ( νν\nu \rightarrow - \nu ) of statistics is allowed. We find that for mathematical consistency the Bogoliubov coefficients associated with the ii'th field mode must satisfy αi2βi2=1|\alpha_i |^2 - | \beta_i |^2 = 1 with βi2| \beta_i |^2 taking an integer value.Comment: 11 pages ( no figures ), RevTex - To appear in Physics Letters

A multimoal and systemic intervention for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

    Get PDF
The primary aim of this thesis was to design, deliver and evaluate a long term cognitive behavioural multimodal and multisystemic (MMS) intervention for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The need to design an intervention was based on research identifying a notable proportion of children with ADHD who for a variety of reasons cannot use stimulant medication

    Transformations in Medieval English Romance

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the role of supernatural transformation in medieval English romance. It explores corporeal changes of humans transformed into animals, monstrous men, loathly ladies, as well as the transformative effects of death. However, transformations could also alter one’s identity and interior states of being. Transformation in these texts is revealed to affect the body as well as the spirit. This symbiotic relationship between outward body and interior spirit is first demonstrated between two separate persons, and progresses to become localized within the one body and the same soul. Illicit practices of magic as well as the supernatural, powers of the faery otherworld as well as divine might, initiate these transformations. While romance transformations occur through various sources, both licit and illicit, the authors and redactors of these romances consistently employ religious imagery or belief at moments of transformation. This engagement with religious precepts proves to be surprising and unorthodox. As such this thesis explores the relationship between religious belief and the politics of disenchantment

Screen-printable silver nanoparticulate-based inks for the electrocatalysis of hydrogen peroxide

    Get PDF
The detection of hydrogen peroxide has been shown to be very important in recent years due to its relevant role in many industrial applications as well as biological reactions. We are interested in it as a quantitative marker for oxidase-based biosensor applications where it is produced when substrate (e.g., glucose, cholesterol) is catalysed by its respective oxidase enzyme. Previously, a commercial silver flake-based screen-printing ink (PF-410, Acheson®), when treated with surfactant and salt (dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) and KCl) has shown to significantly enhance the electrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide up to 80-fold over non-treated inks. In this study, the silver morphology, size and silver supplier is investigated for its effect on the electrocatalysis of hydrogen peroxide. In order to do this, inks loaded with silver micron-sized flakes and silver nanopowders, from various suppliers, are prepared using the binder material extracted from the Acheson® PF-410 to formulate inks
