This article argues that certain adversities encountered in fieldwork may be productive for anthropological research. To make this point, the article discusses three adverse situations faced by the author during his fieldwork in Cuba – an eviction, two hurricanes, and some burns – and the ethnographic knowledge that they made possible. The article’s more substantive topics include moral anxiety, the production of the state, informal solidarity, the gift economy, and everyday temporality in contemporary CubaEste artigo argumenta que certas adversidades encontradas no trabalho de campo etnográfico podem ser produtivas para a pesquisa antropológica.

Phenomenology of vector-like leptons with Deep Learning at the Large Hadron Collider

In this paper, a model inspired by Grand Unification principles featuring three generations of vector-like fermions, new Higgs doublets and a rich neutrino sector at the low scale is presented. Using the state-of-the-art Deep Learning techniques we perform the first phenomenological analysis of this model focusing on the study of new charged vector-like leptons (VLLs) and their possible signatures at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In our numerical analysis we consider signal events for vector-boson fusion and VLL pair production topologies, both involving a final state containing a pair of charged leptons of different flavor and two sterile neutrinos that provide a missing energy. We also consider the case of VLL single production where, in addition to a pair of sterile neutrinos, the final state contains only one charged lepton. We propose a novel method to identify missing transverse energy vectors by comparing the detector response with Monte-Carlo simulated data. All calculated observables are provided as data sets for Deep Learning analysis, where a neural network is constructed, based on results obtained via an evolutive algorithm, whose objective is to maximise either the accuracy metric or the Asimov significance for different masses of the VLL. Taking into account the effect of the three analysed topologies, we have found that the combined significance for the observation of new VLLs at the high-luminosity LHC can range from 5.7σ, for a mass of 1.25 TeV, all the way up to 28σ if the VLL mass is 200 GeV. We have also shown that by the end of the LHC Run-III a 200 GeV VLL can be excluded with a confidence of 8.8 standard deviations. The results obtained show that our model can be probed well before the end of the LHC operations and, in particular, providing important phenomenological information to constrain the energy scale at which new gauge symmetries emergent from the considered Grand Unification picture can be manifest.publishe

    New Sign Uncertainty Principles

We prove new sign uncertainty principles which vastly generalize the recent developments of Bourgain, Clozel & Kahane and Cohn & Gon\c{c}alves, and apply our results to a variety of spaces and operators. In particular, we establish new sign uncertainty principles for Fourier and Dini series, the Hilbert transform, the discrete Fourier and Hankel transforms, spherical harmonics, and Jacobi polynomials, among others. We present numerical evidence highlighting the relationship between the discrete and continuous sign uncertainty principles for the Fourier and Hankel transforms, which in turn are connected with the sphere packing problem via linear programming. Finally, we explore some connections between the sign uncertainty principle on the sphere and spherical designs.Comment: 45 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables, v3: typos corrected, numerics extende

On interplay between flavour anomalies and neutrino properties

A minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) featuring two scalar leptoquarks, an SU(2) doublet with hypercharge 1/6 and a singlet with hypercharge 1/3, is proposed as an economical benchmark model for studies of an interplay between flavour physics and properties of the neutrino sector. The presence of such type of leptoquarks radiatively generates neutrino masses and offers a simultaneous explanation for the current B-physics anomalies involving bcνb \to c \ell \nu_\ell decays. The model can also accommodate both the muon magnetic moment and the recently reported WW mass anomalies, while complying with the most stringent lepton flavour violating observables.Comment: Accepted versio

Analysis of the Implementation of the Standard Performance ABNT NBR 15.575/2013: A Case Study with Brazilian Constructors

The development of studies about the housing constructions developments came from the need to ratify the effectiveness of the construction systems to the detriment of the low quality of the final product related to civil construction, which was unfolded in the creation of ABNT NBR 15,575 / 2013 - Housing Constructions - Performance. However, its implementation is still a point of discussion among several companies in this field, besides there is a gap between the requirements and established criteria and the adequacy of the constructive practices. Thus, the present work aims to analyse, through a multiple case study, the process of implementation of the Standard Performance in Brazilian construction companies, focusing on the main difficulties of implementation. For that, semi-structured interviews were carried out in 5 constructors, being possible to identify the implementation process adopted by each company and its main difficulties of adequacy to the norm. Thus, it was possible to verify that although the standard performance is required, the increase in costs resulting from this requirement has delayed its implementation, being the main difficulty of adequacy. In addition, it was observed that although the implementation process of the regulations is incipient, any effort in its direction represents an improvement in the quality of the civil construction and, consequently, in the durability and useful life of the buildings
