Magnetic Fourier Integral Operators
In some previous papers we have defined and studied a 'magnetic'
pseudodifferential calculus as a gauge covariant generalization of the Weyl
calculus when a magnetic field is present. In this paper we extend the standard
Fourier Integral Operators Theory to the case with a magnetic field, proving
composition theorems, continuity theorems in 'magnetic' Sobolev spaces and
Egorov type theorems. The main application is the representation of the
evolution group generated by a 1-st order 'magnetic' pseudodifferential
operator (in particular the relativistic Schr\"{o}dinger operator with magnetic
field) as such a 'magnetic' Fourier Integral Operator. As a consequence of this
representation we obtain some estimations for the distribution kernel of this
evolution group and a result on the propagation of singularities
Surprising lack of liposome-induced complement activation by artificial 1,3-diamidophospholipids in vitro
Cardio-vascular diseases are the main cause of death, emphasizing the need to improve patient treatment and survival. One therapeutic approach is a liposome-based drug carrier system specifically targeting constricted arteries. The recently discovered mechano-sensitive liposomes use hemodynamic shear-stress differences between healthy and constricted blood vessels as trigger for drug release. Liposomes are promising delivery containers but are being recognized as foreign by the immune system. Complement activation as essential factor of the recognition leads to adverse effects. Here, we tested complement activation by liposomes formulated from the artificial phospholipid Pad-PC-Pad in vitro. Surprisingly no complement activation was detected in human sera and porcine plasma. In in vivo experiments with three pigs, neither anaphylactic reactions nor other significant hemodynamic changes were observed even at comparably high liposome doses. A CDCL-style calculus for solving non-linear constraints
In this paper we propose a novel approach for checking satisfiability of
non-linear constraints over the reals, called ksmt. The procedure is based on
conflict resolution in CDCL style calculus, using a composition of symbolical
and numerical methods. To deal with the non-linear components in case of
conflicts we use numerically constructed restricted linearisations. This
approach covers a large number of computable non-linear real functions such as
polynomials, rational or trigonometrical functions and beyond. A prototypical
implementation has been evaluated on several non-linear SMT-LIB examples and

Bayesian Methods for Exoplanet Science
Exoplanet research is carried out at the limits of the capabilities of
current telescopes and instruments. The studied signals are weak, and often
embedded in complex systematics from instrumental, telluric, and astrophysical
sources. Combining repeated observations of periodic events, simultaneous
observations with multiple telescopes, different observation techniques, and
existing information from theory and prior research can help to disentangle the
systematics from the planetary signals, and offers synergistic advantages over
analysing observations separately. Bayesian inference provides a
self-consistent statistical framework that addresses both the necessity for
complex systematics models, and the need to combine prior information and
heterogeneous observations. This chapter offers a brief introduction to
Bayesian inference in the context of exoplanet research, with focus on time
series analysis, and finishes with an overview of a set of freely available

In the 1990s, declining semen quality has been reported from Belgium, Denmark, France, and Great Britain. The incidence of testicular cancer has increased during the same time incidences of hypospadias and cryptorchidism also appear to be increasing. Similar reproductive problems occur in many wildlife species. There are marked geographic differences in the prevalence of male reproductive disorders. While the reasons for these differences are currently unknown, both clinical and laboratory research suggest that the adverse changes may be inter-related and have a common origin in fetal life or childhood. Exposure of the male fetus to supranormal levels of estrogens, such as diethlylstilbestrol, can result in the above-mentioned reproductive defects. The growing number of reports demonstrating that common environmental contaminants and natural factors possess estrogenic activity presents the working hypothesis that the adverse trends in male reproductive health may be, at least in part, associated with exposure to estrogenic or other hormonally active (e.g., antiandrogenic) environmental chemicals during fetal and childhood development. An extensive research program is needed to understand the extent of the problem, its underlying etiology, and the development of a strategy for prevention and intervention.Supported by EU Contract BMH4-CT96-0314
Neuroactive substances specifically modulate rhythmic body contractions in the nerveless metazoon Tethya wilhelma (Demospongiae, Porifera)
BACKGROUND: Sponges (Porifera) are nerve- and muscleless metazoa, but display coordinated motor reactions. Therefore, they represent a valuable phylum to investigate coordination systems, which evolved in a hypothetical Urmetazoon prior to the central nervous system (CNS) of later metazoa. We have chosen the contractile and locomotive species Tethya wilhelma (Demospongiae, Hadromerida) as a model system for our research, using quantitative analysis based on digital time lapse imaging. In order to evaluate candidate coordination pathways, we extracorporeally tested a number of chemical messengers, agonists and antagonists known from chemical signalling pathways in animals with CNS. RESULTS: Sponge body contraction of T. wilhelma was induced by caffeine, glycine, serotonine, nitric oxide (NO) and extracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). The induction by glycine and cAMP followed patterns varying from other substances. Induction by cAMP was delayed, while glycine lead to a bi-phasic contraction response. The frequency of the endogenous contraction rhythm of T. wilhelma was significantly decreased by adrenaline and NO, with the same tendency for cAMP and acetylcholine. In contrast, caffeine and glycine increased the contraction frequency. The endogenous rhythm appeared irregular during application of caffeine, adrenaline, NO and cAMP. Caffeine, glycine and NO attenuated the contraction amplitude. All effects on the endogenous rhythm were neutralised by the washout of the substances from the experimental reactor system. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that a number of chemical messengers, agonists and antagonists induce contraction and/or modulate the endogenous contraction rhythm and amplitude of our nerveless model metazoon T. wilhelma. We conclude that a relatively complex system of chemical messengers regulates the contraction behaviour through auto- and paracrine signalling, which is presented in a hypothetical model. We assume that adrenergic, adenosynergic and glycinergic pathways, as well as pathways based on NO and extracellular cAMP are candidates for the regulation and timing of the endogenous contraction rhythm within pacemaker cells, while GABA, glutamate and serotonine are candidates for the direct coordination of the contractile cells

One of Bertolt Brecht’s most famous poems, Mein Bruder war ein Flieger, is often invoked as a manifesto for pacifist ideals, but some essential questions (who is the lyric I? what is the literal meaning of the poem?) have hardly received any attention. By evoking the poem’s nature as a Kinderlied, the context of its first publication, and its relationship with Brecht’s play Die Gewehre der Frau Carrar, this article tentatively identifies the source of its final pointe in a famous passage of Aeschylus’ Seven against Thebes, thereby suggesting—on the basis of textual comparisons—an example of far-reaching, ideological Antikerezeption in Brecht’s oeuvre, working all the way down to his Kalendergeschichten and to his Antigone
