Improved Average Complexity for Comparison-Based Sorting
This paper studies the average complexity on the number of comparisons for
sorting algorithms. Its information-theoretic lower bound is . For many efficient algorithms, the first term is easy to
achieve and our focus is on the (negative) constant factor of the linear term.
The current best value is for the MergeInsertion sort. Our new value
is , narrowing the gap by some . An important building block of
our algorithm is "two-element insertion," which inserts two numbers and
, , into a sorted sequence . This insertion algorithm is still
sufficiently simple for rigorous mathematical analysis and works well for a
certain range of the length of for which the simple binary insertion does
not, thus allowing us to take a complementary approach with the binary

The incidence and clinical presentation of infantile rotavirus diarrhoea in Sierra Leone
Objectives. An effective vaccine is needed to protect against severe rotavirus disease, an important cause of gastroenteritis. Since there are no data on the incidence and antigenic diversity of rotavirus infection in Sierra Leone, we studied its epidemiology to enable an effective vaccine strategy to be designed.Methods. Children between the ages of 3 and 30 months presenting with gastroenteritis to the Ola During Children’s Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone, were enrolled. Stool specimens were tested in South Africa using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to confirm rotavirus infection.Results. Over a 5-month period 143 children presenting with gastroenteritis were recruited. Stool samples obtained from 128 study subjects were tested for the presence of rotavirus; 45% were aged between 3 and 9 months (mean age 10.85 months), and 48 stool samples (37.5%) tested positive for rotavirus. The incidence of rotavirus infection was 20% higher in boys than in girls, a gender difference confirmed elsewhere in West Africa. The prevalence of rotavirus-positive stools peaked in August, coinciding with the rainy season. About 90% of the rotavirus-positive patients had severe diarrhoea, as opposed to only about two-thirds of the patients whosediarrhoea as not caused by rotavirus; this difference was statistically significant.Conclusions. There is a high incidence of rotavirus infection in Sierra Leone, with rotavirus causing 37.5% of the gastroenteritis in this study. Patients with rotavirus gastroenteritis almost all had severe diarrhoea. The high incidence of rotavirus infection and the severity of the diseasepresentation make the institution of a rotavirus vaccine programme in Sierra Leone imperative
Biomass, Mineral Elements and Protein Contents of Six Freshwater Macrophytes from Ghana
The biomass, mineral elements and protein contents of six freshwater macrophytes found in Ghana are reported in this paper. The plants are Ceratophyllum demersum (a submerged plant), Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes (free-floating plants), Echinochloa pyramidalis and Typha domingensis (emergent plants) and Nymphaea lotus (a floating-leaved plant). The fresh and dry weights of the plants were measured and the concentration of six elements: calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sodium in the tissues of the plants were determined. Calcium and magnesium contents were determined by ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) titration, nitrogen by micro-Kjeldahl method, phosphorus as orthophosphate after reaction with molybdate by absorption spectrophotometry, and potassium and sodium by flame photometry. The fresh weight of the plants ranged from 22 to 57 t ha-1 while the dry weight ranged from 1.2 to 12.5 t ha-1. Mineral elements varied in the plants as follows: calcium, 0.6–2.2; magnesium, 0.4–2.7; nitrogen, 1.4–3.7; phosphorous, 0.2–0.8; potassium, 0.4–5.2; and sodium, 0.4–3.4 per cent dry weight. Water quality at the habitat of the Podostemaceae in Ghana
The water quality and river catchment characteristics of Ankasa, Asuboni and Pawnpawn rivers in Ghana where Podostemaceae grow were determined using standard methods. The altitude of the sites ranged from 100 to 290 mabove sea level. The catchment areas for the sites vary from 35 to 171 km2. Between 10–81% of the catchment areas of the sites are within forest reserves. The study showed that the Podostemaceae in Ghana inhabit rivers with the following range of physico-chemical characteristics: pH 6.7–7.3, calcium 2.2–16.0 mg l-1, ammonia-nitrogen 0.07–0. 90 mg l-1, chloride 6.8–38.0 mg l-1, electrical conductivity 26.4–138.0 mS cm-1, magnesium 0.4–9.7 mg l-1, nitrate-nitrogen 0.1–0.6 mg l-1, phosphate 0.01–0.30 mgl-1, silicate 0-21.4 mg l-1 and sulphate 1.5–20.8 mg l-1. The results indicate the quality of water at the habitat of Podostemaceae in Ghana
Antigen structural requirements for immunoglobulin isotype switching in mice
L-Tyrosine-p-azobenzene-p-arsonate (RAT) is immunogenic and serves as a carrier for anti-hapten antibody responses in guinea pigs, rats, and mice. However, the murine anti-N-2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) plaque-forming cell (PFC) response to the bifunctional antigen 2,4-dinitrophenyl-6-amino-caproyl-L- tyrosine-p-azobenzene-p-arsonate (DNP-SAC-RAT; or BI-1) is extremely weak (2,000-4,000 PFC/spleen) and exclusively IgM in both primary and secondary responses. The 6-amino-caproyl group serves as a spacer in this antigen between the DNP haptenic and RAT carrier epitopes. In view of recent evidence indicating that different T helper cells synergize for optimal antibody responses, a trifunctional antigen, N-2,4- dinitrophenyl-6-amino-caproyl-L-tyrosine-p-azobenze-p-arsonate-(proline)9-L- tyrosine-p-azobenzene-p-arsonate (DNP-SAC-RAT-PRO(9)-RAT; or TRI), was prepared to investigate the effect of adding a second RAT epitope to BI-1. The nonaproline spacer between the two RAT epitopes in TRI is assumed to be a rigid rod of approximately 28 A. TRI induced about twice as many PFC as BI-1 in primary responses of A/J mice, and induced both IgM and IgG PFC in secondary responses. Furthermore, TRI induced IgG PFC responses in mice primed with p-azobenzene-p-arsonate-keyhole limpet hemocyanin, BI-1, or RAT, whereas boosting with BI-1 failed to induce IgG PFC, even in mice primed with TRI. These findings indicate that the minimum antigen structural requirements for inducing IgG PFC in mice are two carrier epitopes and one haptenic epitope. In addition, priming with a mono-epitope carrier (RAT) is sufficient preparation for IgG responses to a trifunctional immunogen. Because TRI differs from BI-1 by the (proline)(9) spacer as well as the additional RAT epitope, two other compounds, N-2,4-dinitrophenyl-6-amino- caproyl-(proline)(9)-L-tyrosine-p-azobenzene-p-arsonate (DNP-SAC-PRO(9)-RAT; or BI-2) and N-2,4-dinitrophenyl-6-amino-caproyl-(proline)(9)-L-tyrosine-p- azobenzene-arsonate (DNP-SAC-RAT-PRO(10); or BI-3), were prepared to evaluate the possible role of the spacer in the observed responses. BI-2, but not BI-3, induced IgG as well as IgM PFC in TRI-primed mice. However, BI-2 failed to induce IgG responses in RAT-primed mice, indicating that TRI and BI-2 were not equivalent immunogens. Because anti-prolyl antibodies had been found in guinea pigs immunized with N-2,4-dinitrophenyl-(proline)10-L-tyrosine-p- azobenzene-p-arsonate (DNP-PRO(10)-RAT), it seemed possible that priming with TRI might induce anti-prolyl antibodies, which, in turn, could cross-link BI-2 molecules into aggregates containing at least two carrier epitopes. To help resolve this question, mice were immunized with acetyl-(proline)10-L- tyrosine-p-azobenzene-p-arsonate and boosted with BI-2. IgG PFC responses were detected, suggesting that anti-prolyl antibodies were indeed responsible, because priming with RAT and boosting with BI-2 did not induce IgG formation. Accordingly, the observations that IgG responses in RAT-primed mice were induced only by TRI and not by any of the bifunctional antigens indicate that two carrier epitopes per antigen molecule are indeed required for IgG induction. They also provide indirect evidence for synergistic help in the switching of immunoglobulin isotypes
Environmental predictors of bovine Eimeria infection in western Kenya
Eimeriosis is caused by a protozoan infection affecting most domestic animal species. Outbreaks in cattle are associated with various environmental factors in temperate climates but limited work has been done in tropical settings. The objective of this work was to determine the prevalence and environmental factors associated with bovine Eimeria spp. infection in a mixed farming area of western Kenya. A total of 983 cattle were sampled from 226 cattle-keeping households. Faecal samples were collected directly from the rectum via digital extraction and analysed for the presence of Eimeria spp. infection using the MacMaster technique. Individual and household level predictors of infection were explored using mixed effects logistic regression. The prevalence of individual animal Eimeria infection was 32.8% (95% CI 29.9--35.9). A positive linear relationship was found between risk of Eimeria infection and increasing temperature (ORþinspace=þinspace1.4, 95% CI 1.06--1.86) and distance to areas at risk of flooding (ORþinspace=þinspace1.49, 95% CI 1.17--1.91). There was weak evidence of non-linear relationship between Eimeria infection and the proportion of the area around a household that was classified as swamp (ORþinspace=þinspace1.12, 95% CI 0.87--1.44; OR (quadratic term)þinspace=þinspace0.85, 95% CI 0.73--1.00), and the sand content of the soil (ORþinspace=þinspace1.18, 95% CI 0.91--1.53; OR (quadratic term)þinspace=þinspace1.1, 95% CI 0.99--1.23). Substance Misuse Education for Physicians: Why Older People are Important.
This perspective article focuses on the need for training and education for undergraduate medical students on substance-related disorders, and describes initiatives undertaken in the United Kingdom (UK), Netherlands, United States (US), and Norway to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed by future doctors to treat patients adequately. In addition, we stress that in postgraduate training, further steps should be taken to develop Addiction Medicine as a specialized and transverse medical domain. Alcohol use disorder is a growing public health problem in the geriatric population, and one that is likely to continue to increase as the baby boomer generation ages. Prescription drug misuse is a major concern, and nicotine misuse remains problematic in a substantial minority. Thus, Addiction Medicine training should address the problems for this specific population. In recent years, several countries have started an Addiction Medicine specialty. Although addiction psychiatry has been a subspecialty in the UK and US for more than 20 years, in most countries it has been a more recent development. Additional courses on addiction should be integrated into the curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as form part of the continuous training of other medical specialists. It is recommended that further research and mapping of what is currently taught in medical programs be undertaken, so as to enhance medical education in addiction and improve treatment services
On variational principles for coherent vortex structures
Different approaches are discussed of variational principles characterizing coherent vortex structures in two-dimensional flows. Turbulent flows seem to form ordered structures in the large scales of the motion and the self-organization principle predicts asymptotic states realizing an extremal value of the energy or a minimum of enstrophy. On the other hand the small scales take care of the increase of entropy, and asymptotic results can be obtained by applying the theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics
