    Persistent currents in mesoscopic Fibonacci rings

    In the framework of a tight-binding model, we study energy spectra and persistent currents in mesoscopic Fibonacci rings threaded by a magnetic flux. It is found that the flux-dependent electron eigenenergies E(Ī¦) in mesoscopic Fibonacci rings still form "bands" with respect to the flux Ī¦, but there is a scaling relation between the total "bandwidth" and the Fibonacci number. When the strength of the one-dimensional quasiperiodic potential increases, the persistent current decreases rapidly. Interestingly, for a generalized mixing model of mesoscopic Fibonacci rings, free-electron-like persistent current may appear if the number of electrons of the system takes a specific value.published_or_final_versio

    Quantum waveguide theory of serial stub structures

    The electronic behaviors in quantum wires with serial stubs are studied. A general theory of quantum waveguide based on transfer matrix method is developed and is used to treat periodic stub structures, serial stub structures with a defect stub, and Fibonacci stub structures. A number of interesting physical properties in connection with electronic transmission, energy spectra, and charge density distributions in these structures, are found theoretically. In particular, we find that whether there are periodicity and symmetry in the transmission and energy spectra depends on the commensurability of the length parameters. If one length ratio is incommensurate, then the transmission and energy spectra do not exhibit periodicity and symmetry even for periodic stub structures. In particular, the quasiperiodic behaviors are shown in Fibonacci stub structures proposed by us whenever the length parameters are commensurate. The experimental relevance is also addressed briefly.     Executive and perceptual attention play different roles in visual working memory: Evidence from suffix and strategy effects

    Four experiments studied the interfering effects of a to-be-ignored ā€˜stimulus suffixā€™ on cued recall of feature bindings for a series of objects. When each object was given equal weight (Experiment 1) or rewards favored recent items (Experiments 2 and 4), a recency effect emerged that was selectively reduced by a suffix. The reduction was greater for a ā€˜plausibleā€™ suffix with features drawn from the same set as the memory items, in which case a feature of the suffix was frequently recalled as an intrusion error. Changing pay-offs to reward recall of early items led to a primacy effect alongside recency (Experiments 3 and 4). Primacy, like recency, was reduced by a suffix and the reduction was greater for a suffix with plausible features, such features often being recalled as intrusion errors. Experiment 4 revealed a trade-off such that increased primacy came at the cost of a reduction in recency. These observations show that priority instructions and recency combine to determine a limited number of items that are the most accessible for immediate recall and yet at the same time the most vulnerable to interference. We interpret this outcome in terms of a labile, limited capacity ā€˜privileged stateā€™ controlled by both central executive processes and perceptual attention. We suggest further that this privileged state can be usefully interpreted as the focus of attention in the episodic buffer

    The coupled optical interface modes in a Fibonacci dielectric superlattice are studied. In the dielectric continuum approximation, the dispersion relation is found to have two bands of dual triadic Cantor structures, each being nonuniform scaling. For most of the eigenfrequencies, the amplitude profiles of electrostatic potential in this quasiperiodic structure are critical. Moreover, an invariant is analytically derived and is used to describe the general features of the frequency spectra and potential profiles.published_or_final_versio

    RFID-enabled real-time manufacturing execution system for discrete manufacturing: Software design and implementation

    Discrete manufacturing (DM) refers to produce products in non-sequential processes so as to respond to market and customer requirements quickly under limited lead-time. However, in shop-floor management, DM companies usually confront challenges such as information gaps between different manufacturing units, slow responsiveness to customer changes, and poor visualization. The main reasons are lacking of efficient manufacturing data collection manners and software to support shop-floor management. This paper introduces an RFID-enabled real-time manufacturing execution system (RT-MES) for improving DM shop-floor management level in the perspective of illustrating the RT-MES software design and implementation. Several contributions from this paper are significant. First, a framework of RFID-enabled RT-MES is proposed, which is generic and helpful for enterprise information system (EIS) construction. Second, a plug-universal database-aided design (PUDAD) concept and its realization are elaborated, which could reduce RT-MES development and implementation cycle. Third, an interface middleware is reported to enable RT-MES real-time intercommunication with other EISs such as SAP ERP. Fourth, a real-life case study describes how RT-MES to enhance a typical DM firm's shop-floor management, which can be referenced by other DM companies when they initiate and implement RFID-enabled solutions. To date, the Compliance Questionnaire for Rheumatology (CQR) is the only self-report adherence measure created specifically for and validated in rheumatic diseases. However, the factor structure of the CQR has not been reported and it can be considered lengthy at 19 items. The aim of this study was to test the factor structure of the CQR and reduce the number of items whilst retaining robust explanation of non-adherence to DMARDs. Such a reduction would increase the clinical utility of the scale, to identify patients with sub-optimal adherence to DMARDs in the clinic as well as for research purposes.Peer reviewe

    Quantum fluctuations in high field magnetization of 2D square lattice J1-J2 antiferromagnets

    The J1-J2 square lattice Heisenberg model with spin S=1/2 has three phases with long-range magnetic order and two unconventionally ordered phases depending on the ratio of exchange constants. It describes a number of recently found layered vanadium oxide compounds. A simple means of investigating the ground state is the study of the magnetization curve and high-field susceptibility. We discuss these quantities by using the spin-wave theory and the exact diagonalization in the whole J1-J2 plane. We compare both results and find good overall agreement in the sectors of the phase diagram with magnetic order. Close to the disordered regions the magnetization curve shows strong deviations from the classical linear behaviour caused by large quantum fluctuations and spin-wave approximation breaks down. On the FM side (J1<0) where one approaches the quantum gapless spin nematic ground state this region is surprisingly large. We find that inclusion of second order spin-wave corrections does not lead to fundamental improvement. Quantum corrections to the tilting angle of the ordered moments are also calculated. They may have both signs, contrary to the always negative first order quantum corrections to the magnetization. Finally we investigate the effect of the interlayer coupling and find that the quasi-2D picture remains valid up to |J_\perp/J1| ~ 0.3.Comment: 13 pages, 6figure

    A comparative study on the mineralogy, chemical speciation, and combustion behavior of toxic elements of coal beneficiation products

    The huge demand for high-quality coal in China has resulted in increased generation of preparation plant wastes of various properties. A series of beneficiation products collected from a preparation plant were characterized to understand their petrographic and mineralogical characteristics, as well as thermochemical and trace element behavior during combustion. The minerals in the Luling preparation plant wastes from Huaibei coalfield mainly included kaolinite and quartz, with minor calcite, ankerite, pyrite, illite, chalcopyrite, albite, K-feldspar, anatase/rutile, and iron-oxide minerals. Massive clay lumps of terrigenous origin, cleat-infilling carbonate, and pyrite of epigenetic origin were prone to be enriched in the middlings and coal gangue. Minor or trace heavy minerals also reported to the preparation plant wastes. The contents of low-density density vitrinite and liptinite were enhanced in the clean coal, while inertinite-maceral group were enriched in the middlings. The modes of occurrences of toxic elements differed between raw coal and the waste products; and their transformation behavior during heavy medium separation is largely controlled by clay minerals (V, Cr, Co, Sb, and Pb), carbonate minerals (Co and Pb), sulfide minerals (As, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Zn) and organic matters (V, Cr, Se, and Cu). Three groups were classified based on the volatile ratio (Vr) of toxic elements. Group 1 includes the highly volatile element Se with Vr &gt; 85%; Group 2 contained elements As, Pb, Zn, Cd and Sb, with the Vr in the range of 20&ndash;85% and V, Cr, Co, Ni and Cu with Vr less than 20% were placed into Group 3. Thermal reactivity of coal inferred from the combustion profiles could be significantly improved after coal beneficiation, whereas the increased inorganic components probably inhibited the thermal chemical reaction of wastes.<br style="line-height: normal; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-size-adjust: auto;" /

    Hepatitis B Virus Core Promoter Double Mutations (A1762T, G1764A) Are Associated with Lower Levels of Serum Dihydrolipoyl Dehydrogenase

Karger AG, BaselObjectives: The aim of this study was to identify serum proteins with differential concentrations between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and HBsAg asymptomatic carriers among individuals infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) with basal core promoter (BCP) double mutations (A1762T, G1764A). Methods: iTRAQ and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry were used to identify differentially expressed protein, and an ELISA test was used for the validation test. Results: The total number of proteins identified was 1,125, of which 239 showed statistically significant differences in their expression. The relative concentrations of serum dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase (DLD), which showed the most significant correlation with liver diseases and infection, were significantly lower in HCC patients than asymptomatic HBsAg carriers and individuals negative for HBsAg. However, only the difference between HCC patients with BCP double mutations and HBsAg-negative individuals could be confirmed by ELISA. Meanwhile, we found that the concentrations of serum DLD in those infected with HBV with BCP double mutations were significantly lower than in individuals with the wild-type BCP. However, the difference in the concentrations of serum DLD between individuals with wild-type BCP and those negative for HBsAg was not significant.
