Complete intra-annual cycle of leaf area index in a Platanus orientalis L. stand

Leaf area index (LAI) analysis of deciduous forest trees is usually restricted to seasonal monitoring involving the assessment of distinct leaf phenological stages within definite time intervals of the year. However, continuous LAI monitoring that includes entire leaf periods is necessary to define the ecophysiological characteristics of deciduous trees. Therefore, this study investigated the intra-annual cycle of the LAI for a Platanus orientalis L. stand in the Bartın watershed of Turkey. A complete cycle involves three periods: foliation, stable, and defoliation. The foliation period comprises budburst, leaf emergence and flushing sessions, whereas the defoliation period consists of leaf senescence and leaf fall sessions. The stable period is in between these two periods when LAI values are at a climax around maximum. Eight points were determined in the field for the analysis of LAI by a hemispherical photography technique. Over a relatively frequent schedule, photographs were taken almost weekly during the foliation period. Both weekly and approximate monthly photographs were applied during the stable period. Finally, near-monthly photographs were taken for the defoliation period. The foliation period lasted for about 1.5 months from mid-April to May with the mean LAI reaching from 0.16 up to 2.38. Mean LAI was between 2.38 and 2.47 for a stable period over 2 months (June and July). For the defoliation period, mean LAI dropped from 2.42 down to 0.35 over 5 months from August to December. The total foliated period was more than 8 months, which is relatively long for a temperate forest. In addition, correlations between mean LAI and maximum, mean and minimum temperatures were highly significant (P < 0.01) with coefficients (r) of 0.79, 0.90 and 0.93, respectively. By describing the intra-annual LAI pattern, this study fills a gap in the literature on the phenology of Platanus orientalis L. © 2015 Società Botanica Italiana

Rilmenidine therapy potential in pharmaceutical correction of endothelial dysfunction among women with arterial hypertension, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, and visceral obesity

Aim. To assess the effectiveness of a selective I1 imidazoline receptor agonist, rilmenidine, in women with Stage I arterial hypertension (AH), Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2), and visceral obesity (VO), taking into account antihypertensive effects and dynamics of endothelial dysfunction (ED) biochemical markers. Material and methods. In total, 27 women with DM-2, Stage I AH, and VO, not receiving any regular antihypertensive treatment before, were examined. Mean participants’ age was 52,0±5,5 years, mean duration of DM-2, AH, and VO - 3,23±1,0, 5,93±2,28, and 13,53±3,75 years, respectively. Anthropometry, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring (BPM), measurement of endotheline-1 (ET-1), stable NO metabolites (NOn), fasting and postprandial glucose, as well as glycated hemoglobin (%) levels were performed. Results. Rilmenidine therapy (1 mg/d) was associated with target BP level achievement in 77,8% of the patients, decrease in mean 24-hour, daytime and nighttime systolic BP (SBP) by 10,6%, 12,1% and 7%, respectively (р<0,001), and regression of “load” parameters. Circadian SBP index significantly increased (by 3,29 mm Hg; р<0,001), the percentage of patients with normal circadian rhythm («dippers») increased from 49,3% to 74,2%. Heart rate was significantly reduced, from 85,24±4,78 to 72,32±4,24 bpm (р<0,05). Rilmenidine and atorvastatin therapy was associated with reduction in the levels of total cholesterol (by 27%; p<0,05), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (by 36%; p<0,01), and triglycerides (by 24%; p<0,05). BP decrease and lipid profile improvement were accompanied by decreased ET-1 activity (by 50%; р<0,05) and increased NOn concentration (by 9,7%; р<0,05). No negative effects on carbohydrate metabolism were registered during the follow-up period. Conclusion. The results obtained could be used as an additional argument supporting rilmenidine therapy for AH management in women with DM-2 and VO

Objective. To describe the clinical characteristics of IPEX syndrome in a child with FOXP3 mutation. Clinical Case. A boy aged 2.3 years was born from first normal pregnancy with a weight of 3420 gr. Family History. Two brothers of the mother died before the age of 3 years with severe infections, diarrhea, erythroderma, and elevated immunoglobulins class E (IgEs). Since first month of life, our patient suffered from septicemia, pneumonias, pyelonephritis, and meningitis, accompanied with eczematous dermatitis and IgEs up to 4000 IU/L (normal A, p. (Arg337Gln), which confirmed IPEX syndrome. The same mutation in heterozygotic state was found in the mother. A prenatal diagnosis of her second pregnancy ensured a daughter carrier of the mutation
