Background studies for the EDELWEISS dark matter experiment
The EDELWEISS-II collaboration has completed a direct search for WIMP dark
matter using cryogenic Ge detectors (400 g each) and 384 kgdays of
effective exposure. A cross-section of pb is excluded at
90% C.L. for a WIMP mass of 85 GeV. The next phase, EDELWEISS-III, aims to
probe spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections down to a few
pb. We present here the study of gamma and neutron background
coming from radioactive decays in the set-up and shielding materials. We have
carried out Monte Carlo simulations for the completed EDELWEISS-II setup with
GEANT4 and normalised the expected background rates to the measured
radioactivity levels (or their upper limits) of all materials and components.
The expected gamma-ray event rate in EDELWEISS-II at 20-200 keV agrees with the
observed rate of 82 events/kg/day within the uncertainties in the measured
concentrations. The calculated neutron rate from radioactivity of 1.0-3.1
events (90% C.L.) at 20-200 keV in the EDELWEISS-II data together with the
expected upper limit on the misidentified gamma-ray events (), surface
betas (), and muon-induced neutrons (), do not contradict 5
observed events in nuclear recoil band. We have then extended the simulation
framework to the EDELWEISS-III configuration with 800 g crystals, better
material purity and additional neutron shielding inside the cryostat. The
gamma-ray and neutron backgrounds in 24 kg fiducial mass of EDELWEISS-III have
been calculated as 14-44 events/kg/day and 0.7-1.4 events per year,
respectively. The results of the background studies performed in the present
work have helped to select better purity components and improve shielding in
EDELWEISS-III to further reduce the expected rate of background events in the
next phase of the experiment.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Astroparticle Physic
Axion searches with the EDELWEISS-II experiment
We present new constraints on the couplings of axions and more generic
axion-like particles using data from the EDELWEISS-II experiment. The EDELWEISS
experiment, located at the Underground Laboratory of Modane, primarily aims at
the direct detection of WIMPs using germanium bolometers. It is also sensitive
to the low-energy electron recoils that would be induced by solar or dark
matter axions. Using a total exposure of up to 448 kg.d, we searched for
axion-induced electron recoils down to 2.5 keV within four scenarios involving
different hypotheses on the origin and couplings of axions. We set a 95% CL
limit on the coupling to photons GeV in
a mass range not fully covered by axion helioscopes. We also constrain the
coupling to electrons, , similar to the more
indirect solar neutrino bound. Finally we place a limit on , where is the
effective axion-nucleon coupling for Fe. Combining these results we
fully exclude the mass range keV for DFSZ axions and
keV for KSVZ axions
Effects of olive oil and its minor phenolic constituents on obesity-induced cardiac metabolic changes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Olive oil and its minor constituents have been recommended as important dietary therapeutic interventions in preventive medicine. However, a question remains to be addressed: what are the effects of olive oil and its phenolic compounds on obesity-induced cardiac metabolic changes?</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups (<it>n </it>= 24/group): (C) receiving standard-chow; (Ob) receiving hypercaloric-chow. After 21 days C and Ob groups were divided into four subgroups (<it>n </it>= 6/group):(C) standard-chow and saline; (C-Olive)standard-chow and olive-oil (3.0 g/kg.day); (C-Oleuropein)standard-chow and oleuropein (0.023 mg/kg/day); (C-Cafeic) standard-chow and cafeic-acid (2.66 mg/kg/day); (Ob)receiving hypercaloric-chow and saline;(Ob-Olive) hypercaloric-chow and olive-oil;(Ob-Oleuropein) hypercaloric-chow and oleuropein;(Ob-Cafeic) hypercaloric-chow and cafeic-acid. Treatments were given twice a week during 21 days.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After 42 days, obesity was evidenced in Ob rats from enhanced body-weight, surface-area, and body-mass-index. Energy-expenditure, oxygen consumption(VO2) and fat-oxidation were lower in Ob-group than in C. Despite no morphometric changes, Ob-Olive, Ob-Oleuropein and Ob-Cafeic groups had higher VO2, fat-oxidation, myocardial beta-hydroxyacyl coenzyme-A dehydrogenase and lower respiratory-quotient than Ob. Citrate-synthase was highest in Ob-Olive group. Myocardial lipid-hydroperoxide(LH) and antioxidant enzymes were unaffected by olive-oil and its compounds in obesity condition, whereas LH was lower and total-antioxidant-substances were higher in C-Olive and C-Oleuropein than in C.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study demonstrated for the first time that olive-oil, oleuropein and cafeic-acid enhanced fat-oxidation and optimized cardiac energy metabolism in obesity conditions. Olive oil and its phenolic compounds improved myocardial oxidative stress in standard-fed conditions.</p
Patterns on the Fish Skins Induced by Anisotropy in Diffusion (Interfaces, Pulses and Waves in Nonlinear Dissipative Systems : RIMS Project 2000 "Reaction-diffusion systems : theory and applications")
The EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) project is aimed at searching for dark matter particles using cryogenic bolometers. The proponents of the present project have decided to pool their strengths and expertise to build a facility to house up to 1000 kg of detectors, EURECA, consisting in the first instance of germanium and CaWO 4 crystals. The shielding will be provided through a large water tank in which the cryostat with detectors will be immersed. The EURECA infrastructure will be an essential tool for the community interested in using cryogenic detectors for dark matter searches. Beyond European detectors, it will be designed to host other types of similar cryogenic detectors, requiring millikelvin operating temperatures. In particular, this includes the germanium detectors currently in use by the SuperCDMS team, following the current collaborative work performed by the EURECA and SuperCDMS collaborations. EURECA will have two stages. The first phase aims at a sensitivity of 3 . 10 −10 pb and will involve building the infrastructure, cryostat and shielding, and operating 150 kg of detectors. The second phase will be completed with 850 kg of additional detectors, the relative weight between the different detectors being decided by the collaboration according to the physics reach. A sensitivity of 2 . 10 −11 pb is aimed for at the second stage. EURECA will ideally benefit from the planned extension of the deepest underground laboratory in Europe – LSM. With a site-independent design, it can also be hosted in other locations at similar or deeper sites such as SNOLAB

A multi-tiered data structure and process management system based on ROOT and CouchDB
A multi-tiered data structure, analysis toolkit and data processing management system has been constructed using ROOT and CouchDB. This system is well suited for experiments that acquire many computer files of raw data over the course of months or years, that are distributed to different computing centers and further reduced in size by several steps of data processing. Data handling for experiments searching for rare events extracted from digitized pulse traces typically fit this description. An implementation of this system has been constructed for the EDELWEISS-III experiment and is described here in some detail. This solution may also serve as a prototype system for the proposed EURECA experiment. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
