Maturation Trends Suggestive of Rapid Evolution Preceded the Collapse of Northern Cod
Northern cod, comprising populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) off southern Labrador and eastern Newfoundland, supported major fisheries for hundreds of years. But in the late 1980s and early 1990s, northern cod underwent one of the worst collapses in the history of fisheries. The Canadian government closed the directed fishing for northern cod in July 1992, but even after a decade-long offshore moratorium, population sizes remain historically low. Here we show that, up until the moratorium, the life history of northern cod continually shifted towards maturation at earlier ages and smaller sizes. Because confounding effects of mortality changes and growth-mediated phenotypic plasticity are accounted for in our analyses, this finding strongly suggests fisheries-induced evolution of maturation patterns in the direction predicted by theory. We propose that fisheries managers could use the method described here as a tool to provide warning signals about changes in life history before more overt evidence of population decline becomes manifest
HOX transcription factors are potential targets and markers in malignant mesothelioma

The HOX genes are a family of homeodomain-containing transcription factors that determine cellular identity during development and which are dys-regulated in some cancers. In this study we examined the expression and oncogenic function of HOX genes in mesothelioma, a cancer arising from the pleura or peritoneum which is associated with exposure to asbestos.
Methods
We tested the sensitivity of the mesothelioma-derived lines MSTO-211H, NCI-H28, NCI-H2052, and NCI-H226 to HXR9, a peptide antagonist of HOX protein binding to its PBX co-factor. Apoptosis was measured using a FACS-based assay with Annexin, and HOX gene expression profiles were established using RT-QPCR on RNA extracted from cell lines and primary mesotheliomas. The in vivo efficacy of HXR9 was tested in a mouse MSTO-211H flank tumor xenograft model.
Results
We show that HOX genes are significantly dysregulated in malignant mesothelioma. Targeting HOX genes with HXR9 caused apoptotic cell death in all of the mesothelioma-derived cell lines, and prevented the growth of mesothelioma tumors in a mouse xenograft model. Furthermore, the sensitivity of these lines to HXR9 correlated with the relative expression of HOX genes that have either an oncogenic or tumor suppressive function in cancer. The analysis of HOX expression in primary mesothelioma tumors indicated that these cells could also be sensitive to the disruption of HOX activity by HXR9, and that the expression of HOXB4 is strongly associated with overall survival.
Conclusion

In a class of supergravity models, the gluino and photino are massless at
tree level and receive small masses through radiative corrections. In such
models, one expects a gluino-gluon bound state, the , to have a mass of

Constructions of generalized complex structures in dimension four
Four-manifold theory is employed to study the existence of (twisted)
generalized complex structures. It is shown that there exist (twisted)
generalized complex structures that have more than one type change loci. In an
example-driven fashion, (twisted) generalized complex structures are
constructed on a myriad of four-manifolds, both simply and non-simply
connected, which are neither complex nor symplectic
Membrane insertion and secretion of the Engrailed-2 (EN2) transcription factor by prostate cancer cells may induce antiviral activity in the stroma
YesEngrailed-2 (EN2) is a homeodomain-containing transcription factor that has roles in boundary formation and neural guidance in early development, but which is also expressed in a range of cancers. In addition to transcriptional regulation, it is secreted by cells and taken up by others through a mechanism that is yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, the distribution of EN2 protein in cells was evaluated using immunofluorescence with a set of antibodies raised against overlapping epitopes across the protein, and through the use of an EN2-GFP construct. MX2 expression in primary prostate tumors was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. We showed that EN2 protein is present in the cell membrane and within microvesicles that can be secreted from the cell and taken up by others. When taken up by normal cells from the stroma EN2 induces the expression of MX2 (MxB), a protein that has a key role in the innate immune response to viruses. Our findings indicate that EN2 secretion by tumors may be a means of preventing viral-mediated immune invasion of tissue immediately adjacent to the tumor.The Ringrose Family Trust supported this study through a studentship awarded to N.P
Reproductive investment in Atlantic cod populations off Newfoundland: Contrasting trends between males and females
Life history theory predicts selection for higher reproductive investment in response to increased mortality among mature individuals. We tested this prediction over the period from 1978 to 2013 for three populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) off Newfoundland. These populations were heavily fished for a long period. We considered changes in standardized gonad weight as a proxy for changes in gonadal investment. We accounted for the allometry between gonad and body weight, individual body condition, water temperature, and potential spatial and density-dependent effects. Males display significant temporal trends in gonadal investment in all populations; in agreement with theoretical predictions, these trends show increased gonadal investments during the earlier part of the time series when mortality was high, with the trends leveling off or reversing after the later imposition of fishing moratoria. In contrast, females display patterns that are less consistent and expected; significant trends are detected only when accounting for density-dependent effects, with females in two populations unexpectedly showing a long-term decline in gonadal investment. Our results support the hypothesis that fisheries-induced evolution has occurred in gonadal investment in males, but not in females, and suggest that gonadal investment is more important for male reproductive success than expected in this lekking species
Crustal structure beneath western and eastern Iceland from surface waves and receiver functions
We determine the crustal structures beneath 14 broad-band seismic stations, deployed in western, eastern, central and southern Iceland, using surface wave dispersion curves and receiver functions. We implement a method to invert receiver functions using constraints obtained from genetic algorithm inversion of surface waves. Our final models satisfy both data sets. The thickness of the upper crust, as defined by the velocity horizon Vs= 3.7 km s−1, is fairly uniform at ∼6.5–9 km beneath the Tertiary intraplate areas of western and eastern Iceland, and unusually thick at 11 km beneath station HOT22 in the far south of Iceland. The depth to the base of the lower crust, as defined by the velocity horizon Vs= 4.1 km s−1 is ∼20–26 km in western Iceland and ∼27–33 km in eastern Iceland. These results agree with those of explosion profiles that detect a thinner crust beneath western Iceland than beneath eastern Iceland. An earlier report of a substantial low-velocity zone beneath the Middle Volcanic Zone in the lower crust is confirmed by a similar observation beneath an additional station there. As was found in previous receiver function studies, the most reliable feature of the results is the clear division into an upper sequence that is a few kilometres thick where velocity gradients are high, and a lower, thicker sequence where velocity gradients are low. The transition to typical mantle velocities is variable, and may range from being very gradational to being relatively sharp and clear. A clear Moho, by any definition, is rarely seen, and there is thus uncertainty in estimates of the thickness of the crust in many areas. Although a great deal of seismic data are now available constraining the structures of the crust and upper mantle beneath Iceland, their geological nature is not well understood
An infinite family of magnetized Morgan-Morgan relativistic thin disks
Applying the Horsk\'y-Mitskievitch conjecture to the empty space solutions of
Morgan and Morgan due to the gravitational field of a finite disk, we have
obtained the corresponding solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The
resulting expressions are simply written in terms of oblate spheroidal
coordinates and the solutions represent fields due to magnetized static thin
disk of finite extension. Now, although the solutions are not asymptotically
flat, the masses of the disks are finite and the energy-momentum tensor agrees
with the energy conditions. Furthermore, the magnetic field and the circular

Scientific Highlights of the HETE-2 Mission
The HETE-2 mission has been highly productive. It has observed more than 250
GRBs so far. It is currently localizing 25 - 30 GRBs per year, and has
localized 43 GRBs to date. Twenty-one of these localizations have led to the
detection of X-ray, optical, or radio afterglows, and as of now, 11 of the
bursts with afterglows have known redshifts. HETE-2 has confirmed the
connection between GRBs and Type Ic supernovae, a singular achievement and
certainly one of the scientific highlights of the mission so far. It has
provided evidence that the isotropic-equivalent energies and luminosities of
GRBs are correlated with redshift, implying that GRBs and their progenitors
evolve strongly with redshift. Both of these results have profound implications
for the nature of GRB progenitors and for the use of GRBs as a probe of
cosmology and the early universe. HETE-2 has placed severe constraints on any
X-ray or optical afterglow of a short GRB. It is also solving the mystery of
