    Effective interactions between inclusions in complex fluids driven out of equilibrium

    The concept of fluctuation-induced effective interactions is extended to systems driven out of equilibrium. We compute the forces experienced by macroscopic objects immersed in a soft material driven by external shaking sources. We show that, in contrast with equilibrium Casimir forces induced by thermal fluctuations, their sign, range and amplitude depends on specifics of the shaking and can thus be tuned. We also comment upon the dispersion of these shaking-induced forces, and discuss their potential application to phase ordering in soft-materials.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, to appear in PR

    The association between home learning during COVID‐19 lockdowns and subsequent school attendance among children with neurodevelopmental conditions

    Background: Children with neurodevelopmental conditions have high levels of schoolabsence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools closed for many students. Therelationship between home learning during school closures and subsequent schoolattendance requires attention to better understand the impact of pandemic educationpolicy decisions on this population. This study aims to investigate the associationbetween home learning, hybrid learning and school learning during school closures(in January–March 2021) with subsequent school attendance (in May 2021) in childrenwith neurodevelopmental conditions.Methods: An online survey was completed by 809 parents/carers of 5- to 15-yearoldautistic children and/or children with intellectual disability. Regression modelsexamined the association of learning location during school closures with subsequentschool absence (i.e., total days missed, persistent absence and school refusal).Results: Children who were learning from home during school closures later missed4.6 days of a possible 19. Children in hybrid and school learning missed 2.4 and 1.6school days, respectively. The rates of school absence and persistent absence weresignificantly higher in the home learning group even after adjusting for confounders.Learning location was not associated with subsequent school refusal.Conclusions: Policies for school closures and learning from home during public healthemergencies may exacerbate school attendance problems in this group of vulnerablechildren.Pathways through Adolescenc

    An Introduction to Data Analysis in Asteroseismology

    A practical guide is presented to some of the main data analysis concepts and techniques employed contemporarily in the asteroseismic study of stars exhibiting solar-like oscillations. The subjects of digital signal processing and spectral analysis are introduced first. These concern the acquisition of continuous physical signals to be subsequently digitally analyzed.     Elective home education of children with neurodevelopmental conditions before and after the COVID-19 pandemic started

    COVID-19 brought disruptions to children’s education and mental health, and accelerated school de-registration rates. We investigated Elective Home Education (EHE) in families of children with a neurodevelopmental condition. A total of 158 parents of 5–15 year-old children with neurodevelopmental conditions (80% autistic) provided information on reasons for de-registration, their experience of EHE, and children’s mental health. Few differences were found between children participating in EHE before and after the pandemic started. Low satisfaction with school for not meeting children’s additional needs was the main reason for deregistering in both groups. COVID-19 had a more limited role in parents’ decision to de-register. The main advantage of EHE reported in both groups was the provision of personalised education and one-to-one support. Levels of anxiety, internalising and externalising problems were similar between children participating in EHE before and after the pandemic started, and also similar between all children in EHE and school-registered children (N = 1,079).Pathways through Adolescenc

    Faithful Squashed Entanglement

    Squashed entanglement is a measure for the entanglement of bipartite quantum states. In this paper we present a lower bound for squashed entanglement in terms of a distance to the set of separable states. This implies that squashed entanglement is faithful, that is, strictly positive if and only if the state is entangled. We derive the bound on squashed entanglement from a bound on quantum conditional mutual information, which is used to define squashed entanglement and corresponds to the amount by which strong subadditivity of von Neumann entropy fails to be saturated. Our result therefore sheds light on the structure of states that almost satisfy strong subadditivity with equality. The proof is based on two recent results from quantum information theory: the operational interpretation of the quantum mutual information as the optimal rate for state redistribution and the interpretation of the regularised relative entropy of entanglement as an error exponent in hypothesis testing. The distance to the set of separable states is measured by the one-way LOCC norm, an operationally-motivated norm giving the optimal probability of distinguishing two bipartite quantum states, each shared by two parties, using any protocol formed by local quantum operations and one-directional classical communication between the parties. A similar result for the Frobenius or Euclidean norm follows immediately. The result has two applications in complexity theory. The first is a quasipolynomial-time algorithm solving the weak membership problem for the set of separable states in one-way LOCC or Euclidean norm. The second concerns quantum Merlin-Arthur games. Here we show that multiple provers are not more powerful than a single prover when the verifier is restricted to one-way LOCC operations thereby providing a new characterisation of the complexity class QMA.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure, 1 table.     Measurement of ΜˉΌ\bar{\nu}_{\mu} and ΜΌ\nu_{\mu} charged current inclusive cross sections and their ratio with the T2K off-axis near detector

    We report a measurement of cross section σ(ΜΌ+nucleus→Ό−+X)\sigma(\nu_{\mu}+{\rm nucleus}\rightarrow\mu^{-}+X) and the first measurements of the cross section σ(ΜˉΌ+nucleus→Ό++X)\sigma(\bar{\nu}_{\mu}+{\rm nucleus}\rightarrow\mu^{+}+X) and their ratio R(σ(Μˉ)σ(Îœ))R(\frac{\sigma(\bar \nu)}{\sigma(\nu)}) at (anti-)neutrino energies below 1.5 GeV. We determine the single momentum bin cross section measurements, averaged over the T2K Μˉ/Îœ\bar{\nu}/\nu-flux, for the detector target material (mainly Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Copper) with phase space restricted laboratory frame kinematics of ΞΌ\theta_{\mu}500 MeV/c.     Diurnal rhythmic expression of the rhythm-related genes, rPeriod1, rPeriod2, and rClock , in the rat brain

    High densities of the mRNA of three rhythm-related genes, rPeriod1 (rPer1), rPer2 , and rClock , which share high homology in Drosophila and mammals, are found in the rat hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN, however, is not the only brain region that expresses these genes. To understand the possible physiological roles of these rhythm-related genes, we examined expression of these genes in different brain regions at various time points in male Sprague--Dawley rats. Using semi quantitative in situ hybridization with 35 S-riboprobes to evaluate mRNA levels, the diurnal rhythmicity of rPer1, and rPer2 mRNA levels was found in the SCN, arcuate nucleus, and median eminence/pars tuberalis. Expression patterns of mRNA for rPer1 and rPer2 , however, were not similar in these brain regions. The rhythmicity in these brain regions was specific, because it was not observed in the cerebellum or hippocampus. Moreover, diurnal changes in rClock mRNA expression were not detected in any of the brain regions examined. These findings suggest that the different expression patterns observed for rPer1, rPer2 , and rClock mRNAs may be attributed to their different physiological roles in these brain regions, and support previous work indicating that circadian rhythms in the brain are widespread.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43939/1/11373_2004_Article_8176.pd
