Foreign Capital and Economic Growth
Nonindustrial countries that have relied more on foreign finance have not grown faster in the long run as standard theoretical models predict. The reason may lie in these countries’ limited ability to absorb foreign capital, especially because their financial systems have difficulty allocating it to productive uses, and because their currencies are prone to appreciation (and often overvaluation) when such inflows occur. The current anomaly of poor countries financing rich countries may not really hurt the former’s growth, at least conditional on their existing institutional and financial structures. Our results do not imply that foreign finance has no role in development or that all types of capital naturally flow “uphill.” Indeed, the patterns associated with foreign direct investment flows have generally been more consistent with theoretical predictions. Instability of Rotationally Tuned Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates
The possibility of effectively inverting the sign of the dipole-dipole
interaction, by fast rotation of the dipole polarization, is examined within a
harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. Our analysis is based on
the stationary states in the Thomas-Fermi limit, in the corotating frame, as
well as direct numerical simulations in the Thomas-Fermi regime, explicitly
accounting for the rotating polarization. The condensate is found to be
inherently unstable due to the dynamical instability of collective modes. This
ultimately prevents the realization of robust and long-lived rotationally tuned
states. Our findings have major implications for experimentally accessing this

Enhancement of magnetoresistance in manganite multilayers
Magnanite multilayers have been fabricated using La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 as the
ferromagnetic layer and Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 as the spacer layers.
All the multilayers were grown on LaAlO3 (100) by pulse laser deposition. An
enhanced magnetoresistnace (defined (RH- R0)/R0) of more than 98% is observed
in these multilayers. Also a low field magnetoresistance of 41% at 5000 Oe is
observed in these multilayer films. The enhanced MR is attributed to the
induced double exchange in the spacer layer, which is giving rise to more
number of conducting carriers. This is compared by replacing the spacer layer
with LaMnO3 where Mn exists only in 3+ state and no enhancement is observed in
the La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 / LaMnO3 multilayers as double exchange mechanism can not
be induced by external magnetic fields.Comment: 13 pages, 5 Figure
Modernizing China's growth paradigm
China has achieved tremendous economic progress in the last three decades, but there is much work to be done to make the economy resilient to large shocks, ensure the sustainability of its growth, and translate this growth into corresponding improvements in the economic welfare of its citizens. We discuss the complex challenges that Chinese policymakers face in striking the right balance in terms of speed and coordination of reforms. We argue that China's current stage of development, along with its rising market orientation and increasing integration with the world economy, may make the incremental and piecemeal approaches to reforms increasingly untenable and, in some cases, could even generate risks of their own. The present favorable domestic and external circumstances provide an excellent window of opportunity for bolder reforms and for tackling some deep-rooted problems without causing much economic disruption
