    Open Data Portal Prototype for the Conservation of Biodiversity of the ‘Universidad Nacional de Loja’

    This article describes the possibilities of research and development that exist in the ‘Universidad Nacional de Loja’ (UNL) in the field of biodiversity through the use and exploitation of information and communication technology (ICT) resources. First, the existing methodologies, processes, and initiatives for the publication of open data was explored. Subsequently, a brief description of the biodiversity conservation centers maintained by the UNL was made, highlighting the IT initiatives that have been carried out. Finally, the results of the proposal include the methodology for the release of open data and the creation of the prototype of the biodiversity open data portal of the UNL.     Keywords: programming, open data, biodiversity, botany, artificial intelligenc

    Diversity for chemical composition in a collection of different varietal types of tree tomato (Solanum betaceum Cav.), an Andean exotic fruit

    [EN] We evaluated 23 tree tomato (Solanum betaceum) accessions from five cultivar groups and one wild relative (Solanum cajanumense) for 26 composition traits. For all traits we found highly significant differences (P < 0.001) among the materials studied. The high diversity found within S. betaceum for composition traits was matched by a high diversity within each of the cultivar groups. We found that sucrose and citric acid were the most important soluble sugar and organic acid, respectively, in tree tomato. Fruit in the anthocyanin pigmented (purple) group had a carotenoid content similar to that in the yellow-orange cultivar groups. Total phenolic content was significantly correlated (r = 0.8607) with antioxidant activity. Analyses of mineral content showed that tree tomato is a good source of K, Mg, and Cu. Multivariate principal components analysis (PCA) confirmed that an important diversity exists within each cultivar group. The results we have obtained indicate that the high diversity found within the tree tomato could be exploited for selection and breeding for developing the tree tomato as a commercial crop.     Mixing effects on growth efficiency in mixed pine forests

    Increased interest in mixed forests is due to evidence of them being more resource-use efficient and stable forest systems. However, intrinsic and extrinsic factors moderate interspecific species interactions generating different effects in productivity. Here, we explore a method to detect mixing effects in a specific mixture com_x0002_bination (Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus pinaster Ait.), comparing the growth of mixed stands with that of mono_x0002_cultures. Combined tree and stand-level analyses also helped determine which mixing effects are most important for forest functioning and how changes at one level influence patterns at another level. Data from the Spanish National Forest Inventory were used to compare growth efficiency in mixed and pure stands; we relied on relative stand density indices to determine species-specific site occupancy. This same concept was used to evaluate competition status and inter/intra-specific competition effects as modifiers of potential growth at the tree-level. We observed that growth efficiency in both species increased with the proportion of the complementary species in the stand. At the tree-level, intraspecific competition was higher than interspe_x0002_cific competition in Scots pine tree growth, showing that it had benefited from the mixture. In contrast, mari_x0002_time pine did not show a competitive response to the interspecific interaction, indicating that tree growth was more strongly influenced by the competition structure (size-symmetric and size-asymmetric) than by the spe_x0002_cies of the competitors. Our results highlight the importance of combining stand-level analysis with that of tree-specific competition relationships when studying mixed-species forests

    Imperfections and Modelling of the Weld Bead Profile of Laser Butt Joints in HSLA Steel Thin Plate

    In many applications that use high strength steels, structural integrity depends greatly on weld quality. Imperfections and the weld bead geometry are influencing factors on mechanical properties of the welded joints but, especially in the fatigue strength, they cause a great decrease. The proper knowledge of these two factors is important from the nominal stress approach to the fracture mechanics approaches. Studies concerning the profile and imperfections of the weld bead in laser welding for thin plates of high strength steels are scarce. In this work, these two aspects are covered for five series single and double-welded joints, butt joints in a 3 mm thick HSLA steel, welded in a small range of welding parameters. The actual profiles captured with profilometer were modeled with proposed geometric parameters achieving an adequate fit with values of the coefficient of determination <2 greater than 0.9000. Description of imperfections includes the distributions of porosity and undercuts. The evaluation of the weld quality, taking as guide the ISO 13919-1 standard determined B and D levels for the welded series while based on the stress-concentrating effect, showed a greater detriment in those series with undercuts and excessive penetration. The analysis of variance validated the results of the different combinations of laser welding parameters and showed, for the factorial experimental design, a more significant effect of the welding speed

    In this work, local properties such as hardness and fatigue crack grow rate in the heat-affected zone of four laser-welded butt joints in thin high-strength low-alloy steel were examined, so as to explain and predict fatigue lives at high stress levels through the fracture mechanics approach. The different welded series presented a similar fatigue crack growth rate in the heat-affected and fusion zones, but lower than base metal due to the higher hardness of the bainitic–martensitic microstructure verified in the welded series. The results showed that at high stress levels in the as-welded condition, the fatigue initiation stage can be neglected and assume some types of cracks, with an initial crack of 0.07 mm and appropriate fatigue crack growth rates, estimates of fatigue life close to the experimental results were obtained

    Fatigue Performance of Thin Laser Butt Welds in HSLA Steel

    This work is focused on understanding the significant factors affecting the fatigue strength of laser-welded butt joints in thin high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel. The effects of the weld profile, imperfections, hardness, and residual stresses were considered to explain the results found in the S-N curves of four welded series. The results showed acceptable fatigue strength although the welded series presented multiple-imperfections. The analysis of fatigue behavior at low stress levels through the stress-concentrating effect explained the influence of each factor on the S-N curves of the welded series. The fatigue limits of the welded series predicted through the stress-concentrating effect and by the relationship proposed by Murakami showed good agreement with the experimental results. © 2021 by the authors
