Discovery of a New Quadruple Lens HST 1411+5211
Gravitational lensing is an important tool for probing the mass distribution
of galaxies. In this letter we report the discovery of a new quadruple lens HST
1411+5211 found in archived WFPC2 images of the galaxy cluster CL140933+5226.
If the galaxy is a cluster member then its redshift is . The images of
the source appear unresolved in the WFC implying that the source is a quasar.
We have modeled the lens as both a single galaxy and a galaxy plus a cluster.
The latter model yields excellent fits to the image positions along with
reasonable parameters for the galaxy and cluster making HST 1411+5211 a likely
gravitational lens. Determination of the source redshift and confirmation of
the lens redshift would allow us to put strong constraints on the mass
distribution of the lensing galaxy.Comment: 11 pages including 1 postscript figure, aastex. Accepted to the ApJL.

Free Magnetic Moments in Disordered Metals
The screening of magnetic moments in metals, the Kondo effect, is found to be
quenched with a finite probability in the presence of nonmagnetic disorder.
Numerical results for a disordered electron system show that the distribution
of Kondo temperatures deviates strongly from the result expected from random
matrix theory. A pronounced second peak emerges for small Kondo temperatures,
showing that the probability that magnetic moments remain unscreened at low
temperatures increases with disorder. Analytical calculations, taking into
account correlations between eigenfunction intensities yield a finite width for
the distribution in the thermodynamic limit. Experimental consequences for
disordered mesoscopic metals are discussed.Comment: RevTex 4.0, 4.3 pages, 4 EPS figures; typos fixed, reference added,

A Keck Survey of Gravitational Lens Systems: I. Spectroscopy of SBS 0909+532, HST 1411+5211, and CLASS B2319+051
We present new results from a continuing Keck program to study gravitational
lens systems. We have obtained redshifts for three lens systems, SBS 0909+532,
HST 1411+5211, and CLASS B2319+051. For all of these systems, either the source
or lens redshift (or both) has been previously unidentified. We find (z_l, z_s)
= (0.830, 1.377) for SBS 0909+532; (z_l, z_s) = (0.465, 2.811) for HST
1411+5211, although the source redshift is still tentative; and (z_l1, z_l2) =
(0.624, 0.588) for the two lensing galaxies in CLASS B2319+051. The background
radio source in B2319+051 has not been detected optically; its redshift is,
therefore, still unknown. We find that the spectral features of the central
lensing galaxy in all three systems are typical of an early-type galaxy. The
observed image splittings in SBS 0909+532 and HST 1411+5211 imply that the
masses within the Einstein ring radii of the lensing galaxies are 1.4 x 10^{11}
and 2.0 x 10^{11} h^{-1} M_sun, respectively. The resulting B band
mass-to-light ratio for HST 1411+5211 is 41.3 +/- 1.2 h (M/L)_sun, a factor of
5 times higher than the average early-type lensing galaxy. This large
mass-to-light is almost certainly the result of the additional mass
contribution from the cluster CL 3C295 at z = 0.46. For the lensing galaxy in
SBS 0909+532, we measure (M/L)_B = 4^{+11}_{-3} h (M/L)_sun where the large
errors are the result of significant uncertainty in the galaxy luminosity.
While we cannot measure directly the mass-to-light ratio of the lensing galaxy
in B2319+051, we estimate that (M/L)_B is between 3-7 h (M/L)_sun.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal. 21 pages, including

The Kondo Box: A Magnetic Impurity in an Ultrasmall Metallic Grain
We study the Kondo effect generated by a single magnetic impurity embedded in
an ultrasmall metallic grain, to be called a ``Kondo box''. We find that the
Kondo resonance is strongly affected when the mean level spacing in the grain
becomes larger than the Kondo temperature, in a way that depends on the parity
of the number of electrons on the grain. We show that the single-electron
tunneling conductance through such a grain features Kondo-induced Fano-type
resonances of measurable size, with an anomalous dependence on temperature and
level spacing.Comment: 4 Latex pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Kondo Resonance in a Mesoscopic Ring Coupled to a Quantum Dot: Exact Results for the Aharonov-Bohm/Casher Effects
We study the persistent currents induced by both the Aharonov-Bohm and
Aharonov-Casher effects in a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring coupled to a
side-branch quantum dot at Kondo resonance. For privileged values of the
Aharonov-Bohm-Casher fluxes, the problem can be mapped onto an integrable
model, exactly solvable by a Bethe ansatz. In the case of a pure magnetic
Aharonov-Bohm flux, we find that the presence of the quantum dot has no effect
on the persistent current. In contrast, the Kondo resonance interferes with the
spin-dependent Aharonov-Casher effect to induce a current which, in the
strong-coupling limit, is independent of the number of electrons in the ring.Comment: Replaced with published version; 5 page
Functional Connectivity Analyses in Imaging Genetics: Considerations on Methods and Data Interpretation
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be combined with genotype assessment to identify brain systems that mediate genetic vulnerability to mental disorders (“imaging genetics”). A data analysis approach that is widely applied is “functional connectivity”. In this approach, the temporal correlation between the fMRI signal from a pre-defined brain region (the so-called “seed point”) and other brain voxels is determined. In this technical note, we show how the choice of freely selectable data analysis parameters strongly influences the assessment of the genetic modulation of connectivity features. In our data analysis we exemplarily focus on three methodological parameters: (i) seed voxel selection, (ii) noise reduction algorithms, and (iii) use of additional second level covariates. Our results show that even small variations in the implementation of a functional connectivity analysis can have an impact on the connectivity pattern that is as strong as the potential modulation by genetic allele variants. Some effects of genetic variation can only be found for one specific implementation of the connectivity analysis. A reoccurring difficulty in the field of psychiatric genetics is the non-replication of initially promising findings, partly caused by the small effects of single genes. The replication of imaging genetic results is therefore crucial for the long-term assessment of genetic effects on neural connectivity parameters. For a meaningful comparison of imaging genetics studies however, it is therefore necessary to provide more details on specific methodological parameters (e.g., seed voxel distribution) and to give information how robust effects are across the choice of methodological parameters
Chemical PARP Inhibition Enhances Growth of Arabidopsis and Reduces Anthocyanin Accumulation and the Activation of Stress Protective Mechanisms
Poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) post-translationally modifies proteins through the addition of ADP-ribose polymers, yet its role in modulating plant development and stress responses is only poorly understood. The experiments presented here address some of the gaps in our understanding of its role in stress tolerance and thereby provide new insights into tolerance mechanisms and growth. Using a combination of chemical and genetic approaches, this study characterized phenotypes associated with PARP inhibition at the physiological level. Molecular analyses including gene expression analysis, measurement of primary metabolites and redox metabolites were used to understand the underlying processes. The analysis revealed that PARP inhibition represses anthocyanin and ascorbate accumulation under stress conditions. The reduction in defense is correlated with enhanced biomass production. Even in unstressed conditions protective genes and molecules are repressed by PARP inhibition. The reduced anthocyanin production was shown to be based on the repression of transcription of key regulatory and biosynthesis genes. PARP is a key factor for understanding growth and stress responses of plants. PARP inhibition allows plants to reduce protection such as anthocyanin, ascorbate or Non-Photochemical-Quenching whilst maintaining high energy levels likely enabling the observed enhancement of biomass production under stress, opening interesting perspectives for increasing crop productivity

Gene expression atlas of fruit ripening and transcriptome assembly from RNA-seq data in octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa)
RNA-seq has been used to perform global expression analysis of the achene and the receptacle at four stages of fruit ripening, and of the roots and leaves of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). About 967 million reads and 191 Gb of sequence were produced, using Illumina sequencing. Mapping the reads
in the related genome of the wild diploid Fragaria vesca revealed differences between the achene and receptacle development program, and reinforced the role played by ethylene in the ripening receptacle. For the strawberry transcriptome assembly, a de novo strategy was followed, generating separate assemblies for each of the ten tissues and stages sampled. The Trinity program was used for these assemblies, resulting in over 1.4 M isoforms. Filtering by a threshold of 0.3 FPKM, and doing Blastx (E-value < 1 e-30) against the UniProt database of plants reduced the number to 472,476 isoforms. Their assembly with the MIRA program (90% homology) resulted in 26,087 contigs. From these,
91.34 percent showed high homology to Fragaria vesca genes and 87.30 percent Fragaria iinumae (BlastN E-value < 1 e-100). Mapping back the reads on the MIRA contigs identified polymorphisms at nucleotide level, using FREEBAYES, as well as estimate their relative abundance in each sample

The 4MOST([1]) instrument is a concept for a wide-field, fibre-fed high multiplex spectroscopic instrument facility on the ESO VISTA telescope designed to perform a massive (initially >25x10(6) spectra in 5 years) combined all-sky public survey. The main science drivers are: Gaia follow up of chemo-dynamical structure of the Milky Way, stellar radial velocities, parameters and abundances, chemical tagging; eROSITA follow up of cosmology with x-ray clusters of galaxies, X-ray AGN/galaxy evolution to z similar to 5, Galactic X-ray sources and resolving the Galactic edge; Euclid/LSST/SKA and other survey follow up of Dark Energy, Galaxy evolution and transients. The surveys will be undertaken simultaneously requiring: highly advanced targeting and scheduling software, also comprehensive data reduction and analysis tools to produce high-level data products. The instrument will allow simultaneous observations of similar to 1600 targets at R similar to 5,000 from 390-900nm and similar to 800 targets at R>18,000 in three channels between similar to 395-675nm (channel bandwidth: 45nm blue, 57nm green and 69nm red) over a hexagonal field of view of similar to 4.1 degrees2. The initial 5-year 4MOST survey is currently expect to start in 2020. We provide and overview of the 4MOST systems: opto-mechanical, control, data management and operations concepts; and initial performance estimates
