Molecular Carbon Chains and Rings in TMC-1
We present mapping results in several rotational transitions of HC3N, C6H,
both cyclic and linear C3H2 and C3H, towards the cyanopolyyne peak of the
filamentary dense cloud TMC-1 using the IRAM 30m and MPIfR 100m telescopes. The
spatial distribution of the cumulene carbon chain propadienylidene H2C3
(hereafter l-C3H2) is found to deviate significantly from the distributions of
the cyclic isomer c-C3H2, HC3N, and C6H which in turn look very similar. The
cyclic over linear abundance ratio of C3H2 increases by a factor of 3 across
the filament, with a value of 28 at the cyanopolyyne peak. This abundance ratio
is an order of magnitude larger than the range (3 to 5) we observed in the
diffuse interstellar medium. The cyclic over linear abundance ratio of C3H also
varies by ~2.5 in TMC-1, reaching a maximum value (13) close to the
cyanopolyyne peak. These behaviors might be related to competitive processes
between ion-neutral and neutral-neutral reactions for cyclic and linear

Space shuttle digital flight control system
The space shuttle digital, fly by wire, flight control system presents an interesting challenge in avionics system design. In residence in each of four redundant general purpose computers at lift off are the guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for the entire flight. The mission is divided into several flight segments: first stage ascent, second stage ascent; abort to launch site, abort once around; on orbit operations, entry, terminal area energy management; and approach and landing. The FCS is complicated in that it must perform the functions to fly the shuttle as a boost vehicle, as a spacecraft, as a reentry vehicle, and as a conventional aircraft. The crew is provided with both manual and automatic modes of operations in all flight phases including touchdown and rollout
The southern dust pillars of the Carina Nebula
We present preliminary results from a detailed study towards four previously
detected bright mid-infrared sources in the southern part of the Carina Nebula:
G287.73--0.92, G287.84--0.82, G287.93--0.99 and G288.07--0.80. All of these
sources are located at the heads of giant dust pillars that point towards the
nearby massive star cluster, Trumpler 16. It is unclear if these pillars are
the prime sites for a new generation of triggered star formation or if instead
they are the only remaining parts of the nebula where ongoing star fromation

Diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA
We study the diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA. We have
implemented the process as a new hard sub-process in the HERWIG event generator

Large-scale compression of genomic sequence databases with the Burrows-Wheeler transform
Motivation
The Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) is the foundation of many algorithms for
compression and indexing of text data, but the cost of computing the BWT of
very large string collections has prevented these techniques from being widely
applied to the large sets of sequences often encountered as the outcome of DNA
sequencing experiments. In previous work, we presented a novel algorithm that
allows the BWT of human genome scale data to be computed on very moderate
hardware, thus enabling us to investigate the BWT as a tool for the compression
of such datasets.
Results
We first used simulated reads to explore the relationship between the level
of compression and the error rate, the length of the reads and the level of
sampling of the underlying genome and compare choices of second-stage
compression algorithm.
We demonstrate that compression may be greatly improved by a particular
reordering of the sequences in the collection and give a novel `implicit
sorting' strategy that enables these benefits to be realised without the
overhead of sorting the reads. With these techniques, a 45x coverage of real
human genome sequence data compresses losslessly to under 0.5 bits per base,
allowing the 135.3Gbp of sequence to fit into only 8.2Gbytes of space (trimming
a small proportion of low-quality bases from the reads improves the compression
still further).
This is more than 4 times smaller than the size achieved by a standard
BWT-based compressor (bzip2) on the untrimmed reads, but an important further
advantage of our approach is that it facilitates the building of compressed
full text indexes such as the FM-index on large-scale DNA sequence collections.Comment: Version here is as submitted to Bioinformatics and is same as the

Antenna servo control system characterization: Rate loop analysis for 34-m antenna at DSS 15
The elevation and azimuth servo rate loops at the 34-m High Efficiency Deep Space Station 15 (DSS 15) are described. Time and frequency response performance criteria were measured. The results are compared to theoretically deduced performance criteria. Unexpected anomalies in the frequency response are observed and identified
Simulating multiple merger pathways to the central kinematics of early-type galaxies
Two-dimensional integral field surveys such as ATLAS^3D are producing rich
observational data sets yielding insights into galaxy formation. These new
kinematic observations have highlighted the need to understand the evolutionary
mechanisms leading to a spectrum of fast-rotators and slow-rotators in
early-type galaxies. We address the formation of slow and fast rotators through
a series of controlled, comprehensive hydrodynamical simulations sampling
idealized galaxy merger scenarios constructed from model spiral galaxies.
Idealized and controlled simulations of this sort complement the more
'realistic' cosmological simulations by isolating and analyzing the effects of
specific parameters, as we do in this paper. We recreate minor and major binary
mergers, binary merger trees with multiple progenitors, and multiple sequential
mergers. Within each of these categories of formation history, we correlate
progenitor gas fraction, mass ratio, orbital pericenter, orbital ellipticity,
and spin with remnant kinematic properties. We create kinematic profiles of
these 95 simulations comparable to ATLAS^3D data. By constructing remnant
profiles of the projected specific angular momentum (lambda_R = /
, triaxiality, and measuring the incidences of kinematic
twists and kinematically decoupled cores, we distinguish between varying
formation scenarios. We find that binary mergers nearly always form fast
rotators. Slow rotators can be formed from zero initial angular momentum
configurations and gas-poor mergers, but are not as round as the ATLAS^3D
galaxies. Remnants of binary merger trees are triaxial slow rotators.
Sequential mergers form round slow rotators that most resemble the ATLAS^3D

Pathwise super-replication via Vovk's outer measure
Since Hobson's seminal paper [D. Hobson: Robust hedging of the lookback
option. In: Finance Stoch. (1998)] the connection between model-independent
pricing and the Skorokhod embedding problem has been a driving force in robust
finance. We establish a general pricing-hedging duality for financial
derivatives which are susceptible to the Skorokhod approach.
Using Vovk's approach to mathematical finance we derive a model-independent
super-replication theorem in continuous time, given information on finitely
many marginals. Our result covers a broad range of exotic derivatives,
including lookback options, discretely monitored Asian options, and options on
