Values of the photometric parameters of Mars and their interpretation

    Get PDF
Photometric data for the Martian disk obtained by Thorpe from television-camera pictures taken by Mariner 9 were used to derive values for the parameters in the photometric function. The photometric function can be applied to Mars and to the design of cameras for photography of Mars. Values of the parameters are for one wavelength only, 0.56 micros and are average or effective values for the Martian disk. The values derived were interpreted to provide semi-quantitative information on the soil. The results do not disagree with other indications that the effective mean diameter of the surface particles is about 400 micros. Another result is that the mean intercenter spacing of adjacent particles may be about 4/3 of the mean diameter

The preparation of corn for dairy cows

    Get PDF
The corn crop of Iowa exceeds in acreage, yield and value all other grain crops combined. In this state, as well as in other sections of the corn belt, corn must be relied upon as the basis of the concentrate allowance for dairy cattle, as it generally is one of the most economical sources of energy. The extent to which it is used renders it essential that the feeding of it be carefully studied, as what are apparently small economies attain large proportions when considered in the aggregate. The preparation of corn for other types of farm livestock has been studied to some extent, but the influence of the various preparations of corn on the total yield and economy of production of milk and butterfat has received little attention. The work reported here is but a part of a series of investigations being conducted on the influence of the method of preparation of corn on the production of milk, and is a comparison of ear corn, corn-and-cob meal, and corn meal

    Superflares on Ordinary Solar-Type Stars

    Get PDF
Short duration flares are well known to occur on cool main-sequence stars as well as on many types of `exotic' stars. Ordinary main-sequence stars are usually pictured as being static on time scales of millions or billions of years. Our sun has occasional flares involving up to ∼1031\sim 10^{31} ergs which produce optical brightenings too small in amplitude to be detected in disk-integrated brightness. However, we identify nine cases of superflares involving 103310^{33} to 103810^{38} ergs on normal solar-type stars. That is, these stars are on or near the main-sequence, are of spectral class from F8 to G8, are single (or in very wide binaries), are not rapid rotators, and are not exceedingly young in age. This class of stars includes many those recently discovered to have planets as well as our own Sun, and the consequences for any life on surrounding planets could be profound. For the case of the Sun, historical records suggest that no superflares have occurred in the last two millennia.Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in Ap

Failure of the ERBE scanner instrument aboard NOAA 10 spacecraft and results of failure analysis

    Get PDF
The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) scanner instrument on the NOAA 10 spacecraft malfunctioned on May 22, 1989, after more than 4 years of in-flight operation. After the failure, all instrument operational mode commands were tested and the resulting data analyzed. Details of the tests and analysis of output data are discussed therein. The radiometric and housekeeping data appear to be valid. However, the instrument will not correctly execute operational scan mode commands or the preprogrammed calibration sequences. The data indicate the problem is the result of a failure in the internal address decoding circuity in one of the ROM (read only memory) chips of the instrument computer

    Direct measurement of B(D_s^+ → φX^+)

    Get PDF
The absolute inclusive branching fraction of D_s^+→φX^+ has been measured from data collected by the BES detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.3 pb^(-1). At this energy, direct pair production e^+e^-→D_s^+D_s^- has been observed. We have selected D_s candidate events by reconstructing five hadronic decay modes D_s^+→φπ^+, K^(0*)K^+, K^0K^+, f0^(π+) and K^0K^-π^+π^+ and have searched for inclusive φ’s in the recoiling D_s^-. We observed three recoiling φ’s in the 166.4 ± 31.8 D_s candidate events, which leads to the absolute branching fraction B(D_s^+→φX^+)=(17.8(-7.2 -6.3)^(+15.1+0.6)) % and B(D_s-6.3+→φπ-6.3+)=(3.6_(-1.6 -1.3)(^_3.1+0.4) %. This is the final version. Available on open access from BMJ Publishing Group via the DOI in this recordData sharing statement: No additional data are available. Objectives To evaluate the prevalence of seroconversion to Toxoplasma gondii in dogs with uveitis and dogs without uveitis. Methods In total, 135 dogs were evaluated: 51 dogs were diagnosed with uveitis, and 84 dogs were without uveitis. Latex agglutination tests were performed on all sera, and the results were evaluated. Results Overall, 7.8 and 6.0 per cent of sera were positive for the presence of anti-T gondii antibodies (dilution ≥1:64) in the groups with uveitis and non-uveitis dogs, respectively. The frequency distribution of variables (positive and negative results in the uveitis and the non-uveitis group of dogs) was tested with Fisher’s exact test. There was no statistically significant difference between groups (P=0.73). Clinical significance These findings suggest that evidence of exposure to T gondii was not significantly different between uveitis and non-uveitis groups of dogs and that the possible association between exposure to T gondii and canine uveitis requires further investigation. This study is the first to report the seroprevalence of anti-T gondii antibodies in dogs in the UK population and the first to report the seroprevalence of anti-T gondii antibodies in dogs with uveitis

Self-consistent anisotropic oscillator with cranked angular and vortex velocities

The Kelvin circulation is the kinematical Hermitian observable that measures the true character of nuclear rotation. For the anisotropic oscillator, mean field solutions with fixed angular momentum and Kelvin circulation are derived in analytic form. The cranking Lagrange multipliers corresponding to the two constraints are the angular and vortex velocities. Self-consistent solutions are reported with a constraint to constant volume.Comment: 12 pages, LaTex/RevTex, Phys. Rev. C4
