    HI and Star Formation Properties of Massive Galaxies: First Results from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey

    The GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS) is an ambitious program designed to investigate the cold gas properties of massive galaxies, a challenging population for HI studies. Using the Arecibo radio telescope, GASS is gathering high-quality HI-line spectra for an unbiased sample of ~1000 galaxies with stellar masses greater than 10^10 Msun and redshifts 0.025 < z < 0.05, uniformly selected from the SDSS spectroscopic and GALEX imaging surveys. The galaxies are observed until detected or until a low gas mass fraction limit (1.5-5%) is reached. We present initial results based on the first Data Release, which consists of ~20% of the final GASS sample. We use this data set to explore the main scaling relations of HI gas fraction with galaxy structure and NUV-r colour, and show our best fit plane describing the relation between gas fraction, stellar mass surface density and NUV-r colour. Interesting outliers from this plane include gas-rich red sequence galaxies that may be in the process of regrowing their disks, as well as blue, but gas-poor spirals.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     The GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey. VI. Second Data Release and Updated Gas Fraction Scaling Relations

    We present the second data release from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS), an ongoing large Arecibo program to measure the HI properties for an unbiased sample of ~1000 galaxies with stellar masses greater than 10^10 Msun and redshifts 0.025<z<0.05. GASS targets are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic and Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) imaging surveys, and are observed until detected or until a gas mass fraction limit of a few per cent is reached. This second data installment includes new Arecibo observations of 240 galaxies, and marks the 50% of the complete survey. We present catalogs of the HI, optical and ultraviolet parameters for these galaxies, and their HI-line profiles. Having more than doubled the size of the sample since the first data release, we also revisit the main scaling relations of the HI mass fraction with galaxy stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, concentration index, and NUV-r color, as well as the gas fraction plane introduced in our earlier work.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures.     The star formation properties of disk galaxies: Halpha imaging of galaxies in the Coma supercluster

    We present integrated H alpha measurements obtained from imaging observations of 98 late-type galaxies, primarily selected in the Coma supercluster. These data, combined with H alpha photometry from the literature, include a magnitude selected sample of spiral (Sa to Irr) galaxies belonging to the "Great Wall" complete up to mp=15.4, thus composed of galaxies brighter than Mp=-18.8 (H0=100 km Mpc^-1 s^-1). The frequency distribution of the H alpha E.W., determined for the first time from an optically complete sample, is approximately gaussian peaking at E.W. ~25 A. We find that, at the present limiting luminosity, the star formation properties of spiral+Irr galaxies members of the Coma and A1367 clusters do not differ significantly from those of the isolated ones belonging to the Great Wall. The present analysis confirms the well known increase of the current massive star formation rate (SFR) with Hubble type. Moreover perhaps a more fundamental anticorrelation exists between the SFR and the mass of disk galaxies: low-mass spirals and dwarf systems have present SFRs ~50 times higher than giant spirals. This result is consistent with the idea that disk galaxies are coeval, evolve as "closed systems" with exponentially declining SFR and that the mass of their progenitor protogalaxies is the principal parameter governing their evolution. Massive systems having high initial efficiency of collapse, or a short collapse time-scale, have retained little gas to feed the present epoch of star formation. These findings support the conclusions of Gavazzi & Scodeggio (1996) who studyed the color-mass relation of a local galaxy sample and agree with the analysis by Cowie et al.     The velocity function in the local environment from LCDM and LWDM constrained simulations

    Using constrained simulations of the local Universe for generic cold dark matter and for 1keV warm dark matter, we investigate the difference in the abundance of dark matter halos in the local environment. We find that the mass function within 20 Mpc/h of the Local Group is ~2 times larger than the universal mass function in the 10^9-10^13 M_odot/h mass range. Imposing the field of view of the on-going HI blind survey ALFALFA in our simulations, we predict that the velocity function in the Virgo-direction region exceeds the universal velocity function by a factor of 3. Furthermore, employing a scheme to translate the halo velocity function into a galaxy velocity function, we compare the simulation results with a sample of galaxies from the early catalog release of ALFALFA. We find that our simulations are able to reproduce the velocity function in the 80-300 km/s velocity range, having a value ~10 times larger than the universal velocity function in the Virgo-direction region. In the low velocity regime, 35-80 km/s, the warm dark matter simulation reproduces the observed flattening of the velocity function. On the contrary, the simulation with cold dark matter predicts a steep rise in the velocity function towards lower velocities; for V_max=35 km/s, it forecasts ~10 times more sources than the ones observed. If confirmed by the complete ALFALFA survey, our results indicate a potential problem for the cold dark matter paradigm or for the conventional assumptions about energetic feedback in dwarf galaxies.Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Ap

    The selective effect of environment on the atomic and molecular gas-to-dust ratio of nearby galaxies in the Herschel Reference Survey

    We combine dust, atomic (HI) and molecular (H2_{2}) hydrogen mass measurements for 176 galaxies in the Herschel Reference Survey to investigate the effect of environment on the gas-to-dust mass (Mgas/MdustM_{\rm gas}/M_{\rm dust}) ratio of nearby galaxies. We find that, at fixed stellar mass, the average Mgas/MdustM_{\rm gas}/M_{\rm dust} ratio varies by no more than a factor of ∌\sim2 when moving from field to cluster galaxies, with Virgo galaxies being slightly more dust rich (per unit of gas) than isolated systems. Remarkably, once the molecular and atomic hydrogen phases are investigated separately, we find that \hi-deficient galaxies have at the same time lower MHI/MdustM_{\rm HI}/M_{\rm dust} ratio but higher MH2/MdustM_{\rm H_{2}}/M_{\rm dust} ratio than \hi-normal systems. In other words, they are poorer in atomic but richer in molecular hydrogen if normalized to their dust content. By comparing our findings with the predictions of theoretical models, we show that the opposite behavior observed in the MHI/MdustM_{\rm HI}/M_{\rm dust} and MH2/MdustM_{\rm H_{2}}/M_{\rm dust} ratios is fully consistent with outside-in stripping of the interstellar medium (ISM), and is simply a consequence of the different distribution of dust, \hi\ and H2_{2} across the disk. Our results demonstrate that the small environmental variations in the total Mgas/MdustM_{\rm gas}/M_{\rm dust} ratio, as well as in the gas-phase metallicity, do not automatically imply that environmental mechanisms are not able to affect the dust and metal content of the ISM in galaxies.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables.     The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey: II. A HI view of the Abell cluster 1367 and its outskirts

    We present 21 cm HI line observations of 5x1 square degrees centered on the local Abell cluster 1367 obtained as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. One hundred sources are detected (79 new HI measurements and 50 new redshifts), more than half belonging to the cluster core and its infalling region. Combining the HI data with SDSS optical imaging we show that our HI selected sample follows scaling relations similar to the ones usually observed in optically selected samples. Interestingly all galaxies in our sample appear to have nearly the same baryon fraction independently of their size, surface brightness and luminosity. The most striking difference between HI and optically selected samples resides in their large scale distribution: whereas optical and X-ray observations trace the cluster core very well, in HI there is almost no evidence of the presence of the cluster. Some implications on the determination of the cluster luminosity function and HI distribution for samples selected at different wavelength are also discussed.Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables.     The Properties of the Circumgalactic Medium in Red and Blue Galaxies: Results from the COS-GASS+COS-HALOS Surveys

    We use the combined data from the COS-GASS and COS-Halos surveys to characterize the Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) surrounding typical low-redshift galaxies in the mass range M∗∌ 109.5−11.5 M⊙{M}_{* }\sim \,{10}^{9.5-11.5}\,{M}_{\odot }, and over a range of impact parameters extending to just beyond the halo virial radius (R vir). We find the radial scale length of the distributions of the equivalent widths of the Lyα and Si iii absorbers to be ~1 and ~0.4 R vir, respectively. The radial distribution of equivalent widths is relatively uniform for the blue galaxies, but highly patchy (i.e., it has a low covering fraction) for the red galaxies. We also find that the Lyα and Si iii equivalent widths show significant positive correlations with the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of the galaxy. We find a surprising lack of correlations between the halo mass (virial velocity) and either the velocity dispersions or velocity offsets of the Lyα lines. The ratio of the velocity offset to the velocity dispersion for the Lyα absorbers has a mean value of ~4, suggesting that a given line of sight is intersecting a dynamically coherent structure in the CGM, rather than a sea of orbiting clouds. The kinematic properties of the CGM are similar in the blue and red galaxies, although we find that a significantly larger fraction of the blue galaxies have large Lyα velocity offsets (>200 km s−1). We show that—if the CGM clouds represent future fuel for star formation—our new results could imply a large drop in the sSFR across the galaxy mass-range we probe

    Structural requirements of benzofuran derivatives dehydro-&#948;-and dehydro-&#949;-viniferin for antimicrobial activity against the foodborne pathogen listeria monocytogenes

    In a recent study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of a collection of resveratrol-derived monomers and dimers against a series of foodborne pathogens. Out of the tested molecules, dehydro-\u3b4-viniferin and dehydro-\u3b5-viniferin emerged as the most promising derivatives. To define the structural elements essential to the antimicrobial activity against the foodborne pathogen L. monocytogenes Scott A as a model Gram-positive microorganism, the synthesis of a series of simplified benzofuran-containing derivatives was carried out. The systematic removal of the aromatic moieties of the parent molecules allowed a deeper insight into the most relevant structural features affecting the activity. While the overall structure of compound 1 could not be altered without a substantial loss of antimicrobial activity, the structural simplification of compound 2 (minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) 16 \u3bc\ub5g/mL, minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) &gt;512 \u3bc\ub5g/mL) led to the analogue 7 with increased activity (MIC 8 \u3bc\ub5g/mL, MBC 64 \u3bc\ub5g/mL)
