    The Universal Rotation Curve of Spiral Galaxies. II The Dark Matter Distribution out to the Virial Radius

    In the current LambdaCDM cosmological scenario, N-body simulations provide us with a Universal mass profile, and consequently a Universal equilibrium circular velocity of the virialized objects, as galaxies. In this paper we obtain, by combining kinematical data of their inner regions with global observational properties, the Universal Rotation Curve (URC) of disk galaxies and the corresponding mass distribution out to their virial radius. This curve extends the results of Paper I, concerning the inner luminous regions of Sb-Im spirals, out to the edge of the galaxy halos.Comment: In press on MNRAS. 10 pages, 8 figures.     Tsunami hazard for the city of Catania, eastern Sicily, Italy, assessed by means of Worst-case Credible Tsunami Scenario Analysis (WCTSA)

    Eastern Sicily is one of the coastal areas most exposed to earthquakes and tsunamis in Italy. The city of Catania that developed between the eastern base of Etna volcano and the Ionian Sea is, together with the neighbour coastal belt, under the strong menace of tsunamis. This paper addresses the estimation of the tsunami hazard for the city of Catania by using the technique of the Worst-case Credible Tsunami Scenario Analysis (WCTSA) and is focused on a target area including the Catania harbour and the beach called La Plaia where many human activities develop and many important structures are present. The aim of the work is to provide a detailed tsunami hazard analysis, firstly by building scenarios that are proposed on the basis of tectonic considerations and of the largest historical events that hit the city in the past, and then by combining all the information deriving from single scenarios into a unique aggregated scenario that can be viewed as the <i>worst virtual scenario</i>. Scenarios have been calculated by means of numerical simulations on computational grids of different resolutions, passing from 3 km on a regional scale to 40 m in the target area. La Plaia beach results to be the area most exposed to tsunami inundation, with inland penetration up to hundreds of meters. The harbour turns out to be more exposed to tsunami waves with low frequencies: in particular, it is found that the major contribution to the hazard in the harbour is due to a tsunami from a remote source, which propagates with much longer periods than tsunamis from local sources.     Formation of a vortex lattice in a rotating BCS Fermi gas

    We investigate theoretically the formation of a vortex lattice in a superfluid two-spin component Fermi gas in a rotating harmonic trap, in a BCS-type regime of condensed non-bosonic pairs. Our analytical solution of the superfluid hydrodynamic equations, both for the 2D BCS equation of state and for the 3D unitary quantum gas, predicts that the vortex free gas is subject to a dynamic instability for fast enough rotation. With a numerical solution of the full time dependent BCS equations in a 2D model, we confirm the existence of this dynamic instability and we show that it leads to the formation of a regular pattern of quantum vortices in the gas.Comment: 14 page

    Two tricritical lines from a Ginzburg-Landau expansion: application to the LOFF phase

    We study the behavior of the two plane waves configuration in the LOFF phase close to T=0. The study is performed by using a Landau-Ginzburg expansion up to the eighth order in the gap. The general study of the corresponding grand potential shows, under the assumption that the eighth term in the expansion is strictly positive, the existence of two tricritical lines. This allows to understand the existence of a second tricritical point for two antipodal plane waves in the LOFF phase and justifies why the transition becomes second order at zero temperature.     Early magnesium reduction in advanced colorectal cancer patients treated with cetuximab plus irinotecan as predictive factor of efficacy and outcome

    Introduction: Magnesium plays a role in a large number of cellular metabolic reactions. Cetuximab is able to induce hypomagnesemia by interfering with magnesium (Mg2+) transport in the kidney.We designed this trial to investigate if Mg2+ serum level modifications may be related with clinical response andoutcome in advancedcolorectal cancer patients during treatment with cetuximab plus irinotecan. Experimental Design: Sixty-eight heavily pretreatedmetastatic colorectal cancer patients were evaluatedfor Mg2+ serum levels at the following time points: before; 6 hours; and1, 7, 14, 21, 50, and92 days after the start of treatment. Results: Basal Mg2+ median levels were significantly decreased just 7 days after the first anticancer infusion and progressively decreased from the 7th day onward, reaching the highest significance at the last time point (P < 0.0001).Twenty-five patients showeda reduction in median Mg2+ circulating levels of at least 20% within the 3rdweek after the first infusion. Patients with this reduction showed a response rate of 64.0% versus 25.6% in the nonreduced Mg2+ group. The median time to progression was 6.0 versus 3.6 months in the reduced Mg2+ group andin that without reduction, respectively (P < 0.0001). Overall survival was longer in patients with Mg2+ reduction than in those without (10.7 versus 8.9 months). Conclusions: Our results confirm that cetuximab treatment may induce a reduction of Mg2+ circulating levels andoffer the first evidence that Mg2+ reduction may represent a new predictive factor of efficacy in advanced colorectal cancer patients treated with cetuximab plus irinoteca

    Lack of Correlation between Liver Tests Abnormalities and Trabectedin Efficacy in the Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcoma: A Retrospective Study

    Elevation in liver transaminases is common in patients treated with the marine antitumor agent trabectedin. However, the impact of trabectedin-related transaminase elevations on treatment outcomes is unclear. This retrospective study investigated the correlation between liver tests abnormalities and treatment outcomes in patients with unresectable advanced or metastatic soft tissue sarcomas (STS) treated with trabectedin 1.5 mg/m2 once every 3 weeks at three reference centers in Italy. The effect of grade 3/4 elevations in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or aspartate aminotransferase (AST) during the first two cycles and at any time during trabectedin treatment on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. Liver tests abnormalities during the first two cycles of chemotherapy or at any time during trabectedin treatment did not significantly affect PFS or OS. Nor were survival outcomes significantly different in the subgroups of patients with or without ALT/AST increases or with ALT/AST elevations ≥15 × the upper limit of normal (ULN) versus those with ALT/AST elevation <15 × ULN. Although liver tests abnormalities are common in patients treated with trabectedin, elevations in ALT and AST are usually transient, occur during the first two cycles of treatment, and do not appear to affect survival

    Homoclinic chaos in the dynamics of a general Bianchi IX model

    The dynamics of a general Bianchi IX model with three scale factors is examined. The matter content of the model is assumed to be comoving dust plus a positive cosmological constant. The model presents a critical point of saddle-center-center type in the finite region of phase space. This critical point engenders in the phase space dynamics the topology of stable and unstable four dimensional tubes R×S3R \times S^3, where RR is a saddle direction and S3S^3 is the manifold of unstable periodic orbits in the center-center sector. A general characteristic of the dynamical flow is an oscillatory mode about orbits of an invariant plane of the dynamics which contains the critical point and a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) singularity. We show that a pair of tubes (one stable, one unstable) emerging from the neighborhood of the critical point towards the FRW singularity have homoclinic transversal crossings. The homoclinic intersection manifold has topology R×S2R \times S^2 and is constituted of homoclinic orbits which are bi-asymptotic to the S3S^3 center-center manifold. This is an invariant signature of chaos in the model, and produces chaotic sets in phase space. The model also presents an asymptotic DeSitter attractor at infinity and initial conditions sets are shown to have fractal basin boundaries connected to the escape into the DeSitter configuration (escape into inflation), characterizing the critical point as a chaotic scatterer.Comment: 11 pages, 6 ps figures.
