Heavy-ion Physics at a Fixed-Target Experiment Using the LHC Proton and Lead Beams (AFTER@LHC): Feasibility Studies for Quarkonium and Drell-Yan Production

    Get PDF
We outline the case for heavy-ion-physics studies using the multi-TeV lead LHC beams in the fixed-target mode. After a brief contextual reminder, we detail the possible contributions of AFTER@LHC to heavy-ion physics with a specific emphasis on quarkonia. We then present performance simulations for a selection of observables. These show that Υ(nS)\Upsilon(nS), J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) production in heavy-ion collisions can be studied in new energy and rapidity domains with the LHCb and ALICE detectors. We also discuss the relevance to analyse the Drell-Yan pair production in asymmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions to study the factorisation of the nuclear modification of partonic densities and of further quarkonia to restore their status of golden probes of the quark-gluon plasma formation.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

FIRST RECORD OF THE PRESENCE OF MANGROVE BORER SPHAEROMA PERUVIANUM RICHARDSON (ISOPODA: SPHAEROMATIDAE) IN THE GULF OF MONTIJO, PANAMA

A field survey was carried out to investigate the presence of mangrove borers at the mouth of San Pablo River in the Gulf of Montijo, western Pacific of Panamá. Previous reports of the National Environment Authority (ANAM) indicate a high degree of root tip atrophy and breakage in young plants of red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle. Samples of roots were sawed off and examined for isopod burrow openings. Analysis revealed the presence of the eastern Pacific root-boring Sphaeroma peruvianum Richardson. The organism bore the roots and it is the likely cause of fall trees due to the lack of root support. A voucher specimen was deposited in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC (USNM 1139603). (USNM 1139603)

SPATIAL PATTERN OF ZOOPLANKTON BIOMASS IN THE GULF OF MONTIJO, PANAMA

The following study analyses the spatial pattern of zooplankton biomass in a seven inshore offshore stations between Puerto Mutis and Cébaco island on October of 1997. At each station triplicates of 150 l samples were collected using a 4-stroke self priming volute pump and filtered through an 80 um plankton net. The salinity increased of 9.7 ppt at Puerto Mutis to 30.3 ppt at Gobernadora Island whereas temperature remained constant at 29.5 ºC mean. Piñas and Puerto Mutis showed lower Secchi depths whereas higher values were found near Gobernadora. Copepods and nauplios comprised 90% of the catches. Zooplankton biomass was significantly higher at Piñas station (83.3 + 5.8 mg/ mt3) whereas lower values were registered south Leones (5.10 + 2.8 mg/mt3).

    Photochemistry and photophysics of thienocarbazoles

    Get PDF
Two methylated thienocarbazoles and two of their synthetic nitro-precursors have been examined by absorption, luminescence, laser flash photolysis and photoacoustic techniques. Their spectroscopic and photophysical characterization involves fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes, and phosphorescence spectra and phosphorescence lifetimes for all the compounds. Triplet-singlet difference absorption spectra, triplet molar absorption coefficients, triplet lifetimes, intersystem crossing S-1 similar tosimilar to--> T-1 and singlet molecular oxygen yields were obtained for the thienocarbazoles. In the case of the thienocarbazoles it was found that the lowest-lying singlet and triplet excited states, S, and T-1, are of pi,pi* origin, whereas for their precursors S-1 is n,pi*, and T-1 is pi,pi*. In both thienocarbazoles it appears that the thianaphthene ring dictates the S, T, yield, albeit there is less predominance of that ring in the triplet state of the linear thienocarbazole, which leads to a decrease in the observed Phi(T) value.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Limits of the energy-momentum tensor in general relativity

    Get PDF
A limiting diagram for the Segre classification of the energy-momentum tensor is obtained and discussed in connection with a Penrose specialization diagram for the Segre types. A generalization of the coordinate-free approach to limits of Paiva et al. to include non-vacuum space-times is made. Geroch's work on limits of space-times is also extended. The same argument also justifies part of the procedure for classification of a given spacetime using Cartan scalars.Comment: LaTeX, 21 page
