    Holocene reef growth and recent carbonate production in the Red Sea

    Holocene reef growth, present date bioerosion .and recorded carbonate production were studied in the fringing reef at Aqaba, Red Sea. Water depth, wave impact as well as nutrient availability were considered. The carbonate production was measured for several coral samples. Samples of Porites-colonies were collected from several depths and sites near the Marine Science Station at Aqaba. Growth rate depends on water depth, size and age of colonies. Within the coral optimum of water depth growth rates vary between 5 and 16 mm/yr. Coral carbonate production was calculated on the base of annual growth increments and skeletal density using transects from shallow subtidal down to 40 m water depth. High resolution stable isotope data were measured to prove the origin of growth increments. Long-term trends of sea surface temperature and carbon isotope shift (1800-today) fit to the known global deviations. Bioerosion rates were determined using standard dead coral substrates exposed in different water depths and environmental settings. Rates vary between 0.6 and 1.4 kg/m2yr. Sediment export evaluated by means of simple sediment traps ranges between 0.3 and 0.7 kg/m2yr. Gross carbonate production, mainly built up by scleractinian corals, amounts to ca. 1.57 kg/m2yr. Bioerosion alters approx. 1.3 kg/m2yr of hard substrates into sediment. Sediment export is estimated to be ca. 0.4-0.6 kg/m2yr. Thus a net production of ca. 0.7 to 0.9 kg/m2yr should remain in the present reef, which is proved by the recorded carbonate production (reef drillings). Net production preserved in the reef can be given with ca. 800 kg/m2kyr (=0.8 kg/m2yr)

    Analysis of the uncertainty in the monetary valuation of ecosystem services - a case study at the river basin scale

    Ecosystem services provide multiple benefits to human wellbeing and are increasingly considered by 18 policy-makers in environmental management. However, the uncertainty related with the monetary 19 valuation of these benefits is not yet adequately defined or integrated by policy-makers. Given this 20 background, our aim was to quantify different sources of uncertainty when performing monetary 21 valuation of ecosystem services, in order to provide a series of guidelines to reduce them. With an 22 example of 4 ecosystem services (i.e., water provisioning, waste treatment, erosion protection, and 23 habitat for species) provided at the river basin scale, we quantified the uncertainty associated with 24 the following sources: (1) the number of services considered, (2) the number of benefits considered 25 for each service, (3) the valuation metrics (i.e. valuation methods) used to value benefits, and (4) the 26 uncertainty of the parameters included in the valuation metrics. Results indicate that the highest 27 uncertainty was caused by the number of services considered, as well as by the number of benefits 28 considered for each service, whereas the parametric uncertainty was similar to the one related to the 29 selection of valuation metric, thus suggesting that the parametric uncertainty, which is the only 30 uncertainty type commonly considered, was less critical than the structural uncertainty, which is in 31 turn mainly dependent on the decision-making context. Given the uncertainty associated to the 32 valuation structure, special attention should be given to the selection of services, benefits and 33 metrics according to a given context

    First neutron spectroscopy measurements in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

    Abstract: A compact neutron spectrometer based on the liquid scintil-lator BC501A has been installed on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The aim is to measure neutron energy distribution functions as footprints of fast ions distribution functions, generated mainly via Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) in present day tokamaks. A flexible and fast software has been developed to perform digital pulse shape separation and to evaluate pulse height spectra. First measurements of count rates and pulse height spectra show a good sig-nal to noise ratio for integration times comparable to the NBI slowing down time and to the energy confinement time. Due to the perpendicular line of sight, D-d fusion with perpendicular NBI is detected more efficiently and the line broadening of the 2.45 MeV neutrons is higher. Ion Cyclotron Reso-nance Heating (ICRH) combined to NBI exhibits a synergy effect, with count rates higher than the sum of the counts due to NBI and ICRH separately. Although the collimator is designed to screen gammas as much as possible, some qualitative gamma analysis is also possible, providing information in case of runaway electrons during disruptions. The experimental campaign for the characterisation of the system (detector + acquisition system) is complete and the determination of the response function is in progress.

    Layup time for an Automated Fibre Placement process in the framework of a detailed sizing optimisation

    Automatic Fibre Placement manufacturing processes have become the aerospace industry standard for the production of large-scale composite components. Besides the challenges linked with the manufacturing of such components, their design process is also complicated leading to the two mainly being treated as different subjects. In this work, the aspect of the layup time required to manufacture the composite component is introduced as an objective function in a detailed sizing optimisation process. The methodology presented is able to identify how the material is going to be laid on the tool, using the sizing information available via a zone-based modelling of the thickness and stiffness properties of the structure. The method is applied to the skin of an aircraft wing and a trade-off between the structural weight and layup time is observed. Results demonstrate that the bi-objective optimisation is a promising tool for reducing the structural mass, while keeping the layup time to acceptable levels by benefiting from a more detailed structural modelling
