    Precision of the determination of focal depth from the spectral ratio of Love/Rayleigh surface waves

    The precision with which the focal depth may be determined using Love/Rayleigh-wave spectral ratios depends on the accuracy of the models for Earth structure and for source mechanism used in the focal depth calculations. Estimates of the precision of the focal depth determination are obtained using the partial derivatives of Love/Rayleigh spectral ratios with respect to the parameters: focal depth, shear velocity, dip angle, and slip angle. We find that errors caused by imprecise knowledge of any of these parameters can be important in practice

    In the present study the effect of pyridoxine deficiency on the utrastructure and morphology of bone and its metabolism was examined in the rapidly growing chick. Pyridoxine-deficient animals had tibias of reduced dry weight and cortical thickness. Histomorphometry demonstrated a disproportionately high eroded surface, lower amount of osteoid tissue and reduced mineralized trabecular width. Anterior-posterior radiographs of the tibiotarsometatarsal joint showed reduced secondary ossification centres and coarse trabeculation. Decalcified metaphyseal cartilage showed irregular trabeculas and a markedly reduced amount of Fast-green counterstain matrix suggesting that there is less collagen present and in turn less availability for matrix to be laid down for later calcification. Plasma activity of the bone alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme (EC) 3. 1.3.1) was decreased. Plasma Ca and PO4 levels did not vary. The present bone study referring to a pseudo-lathyritic state in which collagen maturation is not completely achieved supports the hypothesis that pyridoxine is an essential nutrient for the connective tissue matri

    Evaluation of building envelope retrofit techniques for reducing energy needs for space cooling.

    One of the fastest growing sources of new energy demand is space cooling. According to EU-studies a four-fold growth in air-conditioned space is likely to take place between 1990 and 2020. The energy savings achievable in the end-use space cooling depend on a number of variables related to the building envelope, the plants and to some extent the behaviour of occupants. They are hence complex to evaluate and consequently often underrepresented in energy efficiency programmes and National Plans. This paper is based on some preliminary results of the IEE project KeepCool 2. It discusses in particular: a methodology for bottom-up assessment of the energy savings related to "sustainable summer comfort" solutions; reference base case building typologies are analyzed in 5 European climates, and dynamic simulations are used to calculate the reductions in the energy need for cooling which can be achieved by specific retrofit actions (e.g. additions of effective solar protections, increased thermal insulation, night ventilation, increase of active mass by PCM, low solar absorbance surfaces,...); situations where mechanical cooling can be avoided are evaluated using the Adaptive Comfort model, according to the norm EN 15251. case studies of buildings with good summer comfort and low energy consumption performances, according to the ten steps of the KC2 procedure. the analysis of case studies of "comfort policies" adopted by public and private bodies to ensure summer comfort with low energy consumption (commitments to give priority to heat load reductions instead of introducing mechanical cooling, relaxed dress codes, low thermal insulation chairs, local air velocity increase)

    Rich words are characterized by containing the maximum possible number of distinct palindromes. Several characteristic properties of rich words have been studied; yet the analysis of repetitions in rich words still involves some interesting open problems. We address lower bounds on the repetition threshold of infinite rich words over 2 and 3-letter alphabets, and construct a candidate infinite rich word over the alphabet Σ2={0,1}\Sigma_2=\{0,1\} with a small critical exponent of 2+2/22+\sqrt{2}/2. It is thus crucial to assess the importance of sea-ice and ice-derived resources to Arctic marine species. Here, we used a multi-biomarker approach combining Highly Branched Isoprenoids (HBIs) with δ13C and δ15N to evaluate how much Arctic seabirds rely on sea-ice derived resources during the pre-laying period, and if changes in sea-ice extent and duration affect their investment in reproduction.     Antarctic sea ice impacts on the ocean-atmosphere heat and gas fluxes, the formation of deep and intermediate waters, the nutrient distribution and primary productivity, the so-called &#8216;biological carbon pump&#8217;, one of the most active in the global ocean. In this study, we explore the link between sea ice dynamic, biological production and nutrient cycling during the late Holocene (the last 2,000 yrs) in the Adélie Basin, East Antarctica, from the well-dated sediments of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site U1357. This archive, composed from ~32 meters of seasonal to annual laminated diatomaceous sequences, allows reconstructions at an unprecedented time resolution (5-10 yrs). Our study combines records of diatom census counts and diatom-specific biomarkers (a ratio (D/T) of di- and tri-unsaturated Highly Branched Isoprenoid lipids (HBI)) as indicators of sea ice and biological production changes, XRF data as markers for terrigenous inputs and bulk nitrogen isotopes (d15N) and d15N on chlorins as proxies for reconstructing nitrogen cycle. The diatom and HBI records reveal five distinct periods. From 0 to 350 yrs AD, decreasing occurrences of sea ice-related diatom species (e.g. Fragilariopsis curta + F. cylindrus) together with low D/T values and increasing open ocean diatom species (large centrics, Chaetoceros Resting Spores (CRS)) document a progressive decline of sea ice presence during the year (>9 months per year) with spring melting occurring earlier in the year and autumn sea ice formation appearing later. In contrast, between 350 and 750 yrs AD, high production of open ocean diatom species and low low D/T values and sea ice related species indicate a short duration of sea ice cover (~10 months per year) is illustrated by a pronounced increase of sea ice-associated diatom species and high D/T values. Between ~1400 and 1850 yrs AD, seasonal sea ice strongly declines (<~7 months per year) as a result of early spring melting (increasing CRS production) and late autumn waxing (high occurrences of Thalassiosira antarctica). Longer growing seasons promoted a substantial development of phytoplankton communities (especially large centric diatoms) that conducted to lower D/T values. Consistent with diatom and HBI reconstructions, XRF data show higher Fe/Al and Zr/Al ratios values during inferred warmer periods and lower ratio values during inferred cooler and icier periods, thus supporting a strong impact of the sea ice seasonal cycle on glacial runoffs. The link between sea ice conditions, biological production and nutrient cycling is still being explored and we will discuss its relationship by combining all the cited records cited above with the d15N records that we are currently generated. Based on our results, we find that sea ice dynamic and associated diatom production in the Adélie Basin revealed an opposite climatic trend than that identified in the Northern Hemisphere for the last 2000 years. The 'Little Ice Age' (1400-1850 yrs AD) or the 'Dark Ages' (400-750 yrs AD) corresponded to warmer climate conditions in the Adélie Basin, while the 'Roman Warm Period' (0-350 yrs AD) or the 'Medieval Warm Period' (900-1200 yrs AD) were associated to colder conditions. We therefore emphasize that Northern and Southern Hemisphere climate evolved in anti-phase seesaw pattern during the late Holocene
