Complex network analysis of literary and scientific texts
We present results from our quantitative study of statistical and network
properties of literary and scientific texts written in two languages: English
and Polish. We show that Polish texts are described by the Zipf law with the
scaling exponent smaller than the one for the English language. We also show
that the scientific texts are typically characterized by the rank-frequency
plots with relatively short range of power-law behavior as compared to the
literary texts. We then transform the texts into their word-adjacency network
representations and find another difference between the languages. For the
majority of the literary texts in both languages, the corresponding networks
revealed the scale-free structure, while this was not always the case for the
scientific texts. However, all the network representations of texts were
hierarchical. We do not observe any qualitative and quantitative difference
between the languages. However, if we look at other network statistics like the
clustering coefficient and the average shortest path length, the English texts
occur to possess more clustered structure than do the Polish ones. This result
was attributed to differences in grammar of both languages, which was also
indicated in the Zipf plots. All the texts, however, show network structure
that differs from any of the Watts-Strogatz, the Barabasi-Albert, and the
Erdos-Renyi architectures

What are the psychosocial outcomes of treatment for thyroid eye disease? A systematic review
Background: Thyroid eye disease (TED) causes a number of esthetic and visual problems and its treatment requires close clinical assessment, often for several years. There is evidence to suggest that clinical factors are poor indicators of patient-reported outcomes after treatments that aim to improve appearance, vision, or both. Psychosocial factors can impact on both adjustment to living with TED and also patientsâ perceptions of their improvements after treatment. There has been growing recognition that it is essential to evaluate treatment efficacy in terms of psychosocial outcomes but, to date, there has been no review that has systematically evaluated psychosocial outcomes following a variety of treatments for TED.
Summary: Fifteen studies were included in the review and 6 were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The studies varied greatly in methodological rigor; whilst major treatments such as surgery do improve quality of life outcomes, other non-invasive treatments such as intravenous steroids can have a similar impact and show long-term benefits. Only 3 studies reviewed orbital decompressive surgery which showed better psychosocial outcomes than other types of surgery.
Conclusions: The effect of some treatments remains unclear due to poor methodology and poor reporting of results. Clinicians need to be aware when planning rehabilitative treatments such as surgery the influence of psychosocial factors on quality of life outcomes and the lack of a relationship with clinical factors such as disease severity
QSAR studies on a number of pyrrolidin-2-one antiarrhythmic arylpiperazinyls
The activity of a number of 1-[3-(4-arylpiperazin-1-yl)propyl]pyrrolidin-2-one antiarrhythmic (AA) agents was described using the quantitative structureâactivity relationship model by applying it to 33 compounds. The molecular descriptors of the AA activity were obtained by quantum chemical calculations combined with molecular modeling calculations. The resulting model explains up to 91% of the variance and it was successfully validated by four tests (LOO, LMO, external test, and Y-scrambling test). Statistical analysis shows that the AA activity of the studied compounds depends mainly on the PCR and JGI4 descriptors
Non-operative management of posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction: design of a randomized clinical trial [NCT00279630]
BACKGROUND: Posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a common cause of foot pain and dysfunction in adults. Clinical observations strongly suggest that the condition is progressive. There are currently no controlled studies evaluating the effectiveness of exercise, orthoses, or orthoses and exercise on Stage I or IIA PTTD. Our study will explore the effectiveness of an eccentric versus concentric strengthening intervention to results obtained with the use of orthoses alone. Findings from this study will guide the development of more efficacious PTTD intervention programs and contribute to enhanced function and quality of life in persons with posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction. METHODS/DESIGN: This paper presents the rationale and design for a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment regime for the non-operative management of Stage I or IIA PTTD. DISCUSSION: We have presented the rationale and design for an RCT evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment regimen for the non-operative management of Stage I or IIA PTTD. The results of this trial will be presented as soon as they are available
Predicting language diversity with complex network
Evolution and propagation of the world's languages is a complex phenomenon,
driven, to a large extent, by social interactions. Multilingual society can be
seen as a system of interacting agents, where the interaction leads to a
modification of the language spoken by the individuals. Two people can reach
the state of full linguistic compatibility due to the positive interactions,
like transfer of loanwords. But, on the other hand, if they speak entirely
different languages, they will separate from each other. These simple
observations make the network science the most suitable framework to describe
and analyze dynamics of language change. Although many mechanisms have been
explained, we lack a qualitative description of the scaling behavior for
different sizes of a population. Here we address the issue of the language
diversity in societies of different sizes, and we show that local interactions
are crucial to capture characteristics of the empirical data. We propose a
model of social interactions, extending the idea from, that explains the growth
of the language diversity with the size of a population of country or society.
We argue that high clustering and network disintegration are the most important
characteristics of models properly describing empirical data. Furthermore, we
cancel the contradiction between previous models and the Solomon Islands case.
Our results demonstrate the importance of the topology of the network, and the
rewiring mechanism in the process of language change
Increased percentage of L-selectin+ and ICAM-1+ peripheral blood CD4+/CD8+ T cells in active Graves' ophthalmopathy.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the percentage of CD4+/CD8+ peripheral T cells expressing CD62L+ and CD54+ in patients with Graves' disease and to assess if these estimations could be helpful as markers of active ophthalmopathy. The study was carried out in 25 patients with Graves' disease (GD) divided into 3 groups: 1/ 8 patients with active Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) (CAS 3-6, GO complaints pound 1 year), 2/ 9 patients with hyperthyroid GD without symptoms of ophthalmopathy (GDtox) and 3/ 8 patients with euthyroid GD with no GO symptoms (GDeu). The control group consisted of 15 healthy volunteers age and sex matched to groups 1-3. The expression of lymphocyte adhesion molecules was evaluated by using three-color flow cytometry. In GO group the percentage of CD8+CD54+, CD8+CD62L+, CD4+CD54+ and CD4+CD62L+ T cells was significantly higher as compared to controls (p<0.001, p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001 respectively). The percentage of CD8+CD54+ T lymphocytes was also elevated in GO group in comparison to hyperthyroid GD patients (p< 0.05). CD4+CD62L+ and CD8+CD54+ percentages were also increased in GDtox and GDeu as compared to controls. We found a positive correlation between the TSHRab concentration and the percentage of CD8+CD62L+ T cells in all studied groups (r= 0.39, p<0.05) and between the TSHRab level and CAS (r= 0.77, p<0.05). The increased percentage of CD8+CD54+ and CD8+CD62L+ T cells in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy may be used as a marker of immune inflammation activity
From light to heavy nuclear systems, production and decay of fragments studied with powerful arrays
Reactions between heavy-ions at various energy regimes produce many nuclear fragments which can be populated in highly excited states. The study of these fragments, detected at the end of their particle decay, is important to investigate nuclear forces and structure effects. In recent years there have been many efforts to extend these studies towards the drip-lines, i.e. to systems far from the β-stability valley, by using accelerated radioactive beams. The development of such infrastructures is accompanied by the development of more powerful detectors and associated electronics, capable to identify ions with very different sizes and kinetic energies. Here we give two examples which show how advanced arrays can contribute to the studies on nuclear phenomena. The examples come from the European FAZIA collaboration and from recent campaigns with the GARFIELD apparatus, the latter in operation at the INFN Legnaro Laboratory (Italy) where the SPES RIB facility is under construction
The effects of preoperative chemotherapy on isolated tumour cells in the blood and bone marrow of gastric cancer patients
Recent studies in breast cancer suggest that monitoring the isolated tumour cells (ITC) may be used as a surrogate marker to evaluate the efficacy of systemic chemotherapy. In the present study, we have investigated the effects of preoperative chemotherapy on ITC in the blood and bone marrow of patients with potentially resectable gastric cancer. After sorting out the CD45-positive cells, the presence of ITC defined as cytokeratin-positive cells was examined before and after preoperative chemotherapy. The patients received two courses of preoperative chemotherapy with cisplatin (100âmgâmâ2, day 1) and 5-fluorouracil (1000âmgâmâ2, days 1â5), administered every 28 days. Fourteen of 32 (44%) patients initially diagnosed with ITC in blood and/or bone marrow were found to be negative (responders) after preoperative chemotherapy (P<0.01). The incidence of ITC in bone marrow was also significantly (P<0.01) reduced from 97 (31 of 32) to 53% (17 of 32). The difference between patients positive for ITC in the blood before (n=7, 22%) and after (n=5, 16%) chemotherapy was statistically insignificant. The overall 3-year survival rates were 32 and 49% in the responders and non-responders, respectively (P=0.683). These data indicate that preoperative chemotherapy can reduce the incidence of ITC in patients with gastric cancer
