    Accurate hypocentre determination in the seismogenic zone of the subducting Nazca Plate in northern Chile using a combined on-/offshore network

    The coupled plate interface of subduction zones—commonly called the seismogenic zone—has been recognized as the origin of fatal earthquakes. A subset of the after-shock series of the great Antofagasta thrust-type event (1995 July 30; Mw= 8.0) has been used to study the extent of the seismogenic zone in northern Chile. To achieve reliable and precise hypocentre locations we applied the concept of the minimum 1-D model, which incorporates iterative simultaneous inversion of velocity and hypocentre parameters. The minimum 1-D model is complemented by station corrections which are influenced by near-surface velocity heterogeneity and by the individual station elevations. By relocating mine blasts, which were not included in the inversion, we obtain absolute location errors of 1 km in epicentre and 2 km in focal depth. A study of the resolution parameters ALE and DSPR documents the importance of offshore stations on location accuracy for offshore events. Based on precisely determined hypo-centres we calculate a depth of 46 km for the lower limit of the seismogenic zone, which is in good agreement with previous studies for this area. For the upper limit we found a depth of 20 km. Our results of an aseismic zone between the upper limit of the seismogenic zone and the surface correlates with a detachment zone proposed by other studies; the results are also in agreement with thermal studies for the Antofagasta forearc regio

    Syphilis and parvovirus B19 co-infection imitating a lupus nephropathy: A case report.

    Syphilis can share clinical features with autoimmune diseases, such as cutaneous Lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, secondary syphilis can have visceral involvement, thus affecting the kidney. Syphilitic nephropathy causes nephrotic syndrome with a classic membranous pattern. We present a unique presentation of a co-infection by syphilis and parvovirus B19 sharing all the biological and histological features of proliferative lupus nephritis (LN). We present a case of a 71-year-old Caucasian male returning from a trip to Asia presenting with nephrotic syndrome with antinuclear antibodies (ANA) positivity. Because of nephrotic syndrome a kidney biopsy was performed. It demonstrated a membranous nephropathy with extracapillary proliferation and a full house pattern (presence of IgA, IgG, IgM and C1Q deposits) on immunofluorescence (IF), highly suggestive of LN class III and V. However, several atypical clinical features notably the age, sex of the patient and the history of travel prompt us to search for another cause of nephropathy. A serology was positive for syphilis and a PCR in the renal biopsy was also positive for parvovirus B19. Thus, a co-infection by syphilis and parvovirus B19 was funded to be the cause of the renal lesions. The proteinuria improved; a course of antibiotic was administrated because of neurologic syphilitic involvement (presence of headache with positive syphilis serology in the CSF). A co-infection by syphilis and parvovirus B19 can share all the biological and histological features of proliferative LN and must be recognized as a cause of pseudo-lupus nephritis

    Novel microsatellite loci for Sebaea aurea (Gentianaceae) and cross-amplification in related species.

    [Premise of the study] Microsatellite loci were developed in Sebaea aurea (Gentianaceae) to investigate the functional role of diplostigmaty (i.e., the presence of additional stigmas along the style).[Methods and Results] One hundred seventy-four and 180 microsatellite loci were isolated through 454 shotgun sequencing of genomic and microsatellite-enriched DNA libraries, respectively. Sixteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized, and 12 of them were selected to genotype individuals from two populations. Microsatellite amplifi cation was conducted in two multiplex groups, each containing six microsatellite loci. Cross-species amplifi cation was tested in seven other species of Sebaea .     Three-dimensional P-wave velocity structure on the shallow part of the Central Costa Rican Pacific margin from local earthquake tomography using off- and onshore networks

    The Central Costa Rican Pacific margin is characterized by a high-seismicity rate, coincident with the subduction of rough-relief ocean floor and has generated earthquakes with magnitude up to seven in the past. We inverted selected P-wave traveltimes from earthquakes recorded by a combined on- and offshore seismological array deployed during 6 months in the area, simultaneously determining hypocentres and the 3-D tomographic velocity structure on the shallow part of the subduction zone (<70 km). The results reflect the complexity associated to subduction of ocean-floor morphology and the transition from normal to thickened subducting oceanic crust. The subducting slab is imaged as a high-velocity perturbation with a band of low velocities (LVB) on top encompassing the intraslab seismicity deeper than ∼30 km. The LVB is locally thickened by the presence of at least two subducted seamounts beneath the margin wedge. There is a general eastward widening of the LVB over a relatively short distance, closely coinciding with the onset of an inverted forearc basin onshore and the appearance of an aseismic low-velocity anomaly beneath the inner forearc. The latter coincides spatially with an area of the subaerial forearc where differential uplift of blocks has been described, suggesting tectonic underplating of eroded material against the base of the upper plate crust. Alternatively, the low velocities could be induced by an accumulation of upward migrating fluids.     A PROSPECTIVE CONTROLLED STUDY OF LOW BACK SCHOOL IN THE GENERAL POPULATION

    There are no data on the efficacy of a back school in primary prevention of back pain in the general population or on the characteristics of the population who volunteers. After announcement in the local press, 494 healthy adults volunteered and paid for a back school course in Switzerland. A total of 371 controls were matched for sex, age, profession, nationality and back pain. A statistically significant decrease in numbers of doctor's visits was found by the participants during the following 6 months compared with the controls. However, there were no significant between-group differences in the four remaining parameters (presence and intensity of back pain, drug intake and sick leave). Three-quarters of participants changed their attitudes after the back school. Volunteering for a back pain prevention programme was associated with the presence of back pain problems. Reasons for volunteering are further discussed. Overall, the results of this study showed that a back school for the general population may not solve the problem of low back pain, but improves self-help in a subgroup of the populatio

    Effect of Flibanserin Treatment on Body Weight in Premenopausal and Postmenopausal Women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder: A Post Hoc Analysis.

    Background: Flibanserin, a 5-HT1A agonist and 5-HT2A antagonist, is indicated for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. This post hoc analysis evaluated the effect of flibanserin treatment on body weight in premenopausal and postmenopausal women with HSDD. Materials and Methods: This analysis included three 24-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies of flibanserin 100 mg each bedtime (qhs) in premenopausal women, a similarly designed study in postmenopausal women, and a 52-week, open-label extension study in premenopausal women. Results: In a pooled analysis of premenopausal women, mean baseline body mass index (BMI) was 27.0 kg/m2 in the flibanserin group (n = 1227) and 26.8 kg/m2 in the placebo group (n = 1238). Among patients who completed 24 weeks of treatment, least squares (LS) mean weight change was −1.4 kg in the flibanserin group (n = 1010) and −0.1 kg in the placebo group (n = 1066; p \u3c 0.0001). Weight loss ≥5% from baseline was reported in 21.0% of patients who received flibanserin and 7.8% of patients who received placebo; weight loss ≥10% was reported in 3.8% and 2.0% of patients, respectively. In postmenopausal women, mean baseline BMI was 27.7 kg/m2 in the flibanserin group (n = 467) and 27.3 kg/m2 in the placebo group (n = 480). LS mean weight change at week 24 was −1.8 kg in the flibanserin group (n = 385) and −0.1 kg in the placebo group (n = 425; p \u3c 0.0001), with weight loss ≥5% reported in 24.7% and 7.3% of patients, respectively, and weight loss ≥10% reported in 5.2% and 1.7%, respectively. In HSDD patients with \u3e12 months (n = 880) and \u3e18 months (n = 637) of exposure to flibanserin, mean weight change was −1.0 and −1.2 kg, respectively; 25.4% and 26.9% of patients, respectively, experienced weight loss ≥5% from baseline, and 7.8% and 8.4%, respectively, experienced weight loss ≥10%.     Palm fruit colours are linked with the broad-scale distribution and diversification of primate colour vision systems

    A long-standing hypothesis in ecology and evolution is that trichromatic colour vision (the ability to distinguish red from green) in frugivorous primates has evolved as an adaptation to detect conspicuous (reddish) fruits. This could provide a competitive advantage over dichromatic frugivores which cannot distinguish reddish colours from a background of green foliage. Using an unprecedented global data set, we test this hypothesis by combining colour vision, distribution and phylogenetic data for >400 primate species with fruit colour data for >1700 palm species, i.e. keystone fruit resources for tropical frugivores. Structural equation models reveal that species richness of trichromatic primates increases with the proportion of palm species that have conspicuous fruits, especially in subtropical African forests. In contrast, species richness of trichromats in Asia and the Americas is not positively associated with conspicuous palm fruit colours. Macroevolutionary analyses further indicate rapid and synchronous radiations of trichromats and conspicuous palms on the African mainland starting 10 million years ago. These results suggest that the distribution and diversification of African trichromatic primates is strongly linked to the relative availability of conspicuous (vs. cryptic) palm fruits, and that interactions between primates and palms are impacted by the co- evolutionary dynamics of primate colour vision systems and palm fruit colours
