    Evidence for the microwave effect during the annealing of zinc oxide

    A microwave/conventional hybrid furnace has been used to anneal virtually fully dense zinc oxide ceramics under pure conventional and a microwave/conventional hybrid heating regime with a view to obtaining evidence for the ‘microwave effect’ during the resulting grain growth. In each case it was ensured that each sample within a series had an identical thermal history in terms of its temperature/time profile. The results showed that grain growth was enhanced during hybrid heating compared to pure conventional heating; the greatest enhancement, a factor of ~3 increase in average grain size, was observed in the range 1100-1150°C. The grain growth exponent decreased from 3 during conventional heating to 1.4 during hybrid heating in this temperature range, suggesting an acceleration of the diffusional processes involved. Temperature gradients within the samples were found to be too small to explain the results. This suggests that clear evidence has been found to support the existence of a genuine ‘microwave effect’

    Local Embeddedness and Economic and Social Upgrading in Madagascar's Export Apparel Industry

    Over the past decade, several Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries have developed or expanded export-oriented apparel industries in the context of the Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA) quotas and preferential market access, most importantly under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Madagascar is different to the other main SSA low-income country (LIC) apparel exporters - Kenya, Lesotho and Swaziland - given its more diverse end markets and ownership structures and the political instability that led to the loss of AGOA status at the end of 2009. This paper assesses the development of Madagascar's export-oriented apparel industry and economic and social upgrading dynamics in particular in the context of the AGOA loss. It identifies four types of firms and value chains that differ with regard to ownership patterns, end markets and, most importantly, 'local embeddedness', with important implications for both economic upgrading dynamics and possibilities and the sustainability of the industry. The paper concludes that, despite the contraction in the exportoriented apparel industry post-AGOA, Madagascar is still a more successful apparel producer in terms of economic upgrading than the other main apparel-exporting LICs in SSA.     A new arthropod, Enalikter aphson gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Silurian (Wenlock Series) Herefordshire Lagerstätte of the UK. It belongs to the Megacheira (=short-great-appendage group), which is recognized here, for the first time, in strata younger than mid-Cambrian age. Discovery of this new Silurian taxon allows us to identify a Devonian megacheiran representative, Bundenbachiellus giganteus from the Hunsrück Slate of Germany. The phylogenetic position of megacheirans is controversial: they have been interpreted as stem chelicerates, or stem euarthropods, but when Enalikter and Bundenbachiellus are added to the most comprehensive morphological database available, a stem euarthropod position is supported. Enalikter represents the only fully three-dimensionally preserved stem-group euarthropod, it falls in the sister clade to the crown-group euarthropods, and it provides new insights surrounding the origin and early evolution of the euarthropods. Recognition of Enalikter and Bundenbachiellus as megacheirans indicates that this major arthropod group survived for nearly 100 Myr beyond the mid-Cambrian
