A Comprehensive Spectroscopic Analysis of DB White Dwarfs
We present a detailed analysis of 108 helium-line (DB) white dwarfs based on
model atmosphere fits to high signal-to-noise optical spectroscopy. We derive a
mean mass of 0.67 Mo for our sample, with a dispersion of only 0.09 Mo. White
dwarfs also showing hydrogen lines, the DBA stars, comprise 44% of our sample,
and their mass distribution appears similar to that of DB stars. As in our
previous investigation, we find no evidence for the existence of low-mass (M <
0.5 Mo) DB white dwarfs. We derive a luminosity function based on a subset of
DB white dwarfs identified in the Palomar-Green survey. We show that 20% of all
white dwarfs in the temperature range of interest are DB stars, although the
fraction drops to half this value above Teff ~ 20,000 K. We also show that the
persistence of DB stars with no hydrogen features at low temperatures is
difficult to reconcile with a scenario involving accretion from the
interstellar medium, often invoked to account for the observed hydrogen
abundances in DBA stars. We present evidence for the existence of two different
evolutionary channels that produce DB white dwarfs: the standard model where DA
stars are transformed into DB stars through the convective dilution of a thin
hydrogen layer, and a second channel where DB stars retain a helium-atmosphere
throughout their evolution. We finally demonstrate that the instability strip
of pulsating V777 Her white dwarfs contains no nonvariables, if the hydrogen

Multiwavelength Observations of the Hot DB Star PG 0112+104
We present a comprehensive multiwavelength analysis of the hot DB white dwarf
PG 0112+104. Our analysis relies on newly-acquired FUSE observations, on
medium-resolution FOS and GHRS data, on archival high-resolution GHRS
observations, on optical spectrophotometry both in the blue and around Halpha,
as well as on time-resolved photometry. From the optical data, we derive a
self-consistent effective temperature of 31,300+-500 K, a surface gravity of
log g = 7.8 +- 0.1 (M=0.52 Msun), and a hydrogen abundance of log N(H)/N(He) <
-4.0. The FUSE spectra reveal the presence of CII and CIII lines that
complement the previous detection of CII transitions with the GHRS. The
improved carbon abundance in this hot object is log N(C)/N(He) = -6.15 +- 0.23.
No photospheric features associated with other heavy elements are detected. We
reconsider the role of PG 0112+104 in the definition of the blue edge of the
V777 Her instability strip in light of our high-speed photometry, and contrast
our results with those of previous observations carried out at the McDonald

A Spitzer Space Telescope Study of the Debris Disks around four SDSS White Dwarfs
We present Spitzer Space Telescope data of four isolated white dwarfs that
were previously known to harbor circumstellar gaseous disks. IRAC photometry
shows a significant infrared excess in all of the systems, SDSS0738+1835,
SDSS0845+2257, SDSS1043+0855 and SDSS1617+1620, indicative of a dusty extension
to those disks. The 4.5-micron excesses seen in SDSS0738, SDSS0845, and
SDSS1617 are 7.5, 5.7 and 4.5 times the white dwarf contribution, respectively.
In contrast, in SDSS1043, the measured flux density at 4.5 microns is only 1.7
times the white dwarf contribution. We compare the measured IR excesses in the
systems to models of geometrically thin, optically thick disks, and find that
we are able to match the measured SEDs to within 3 sigma of the uncertainties,
although disks with unfeasibly hot inner dust temperatures generally provide a
better fit than those below the dust sublimation temperature. Possible
explanations for the dearth of dust around SDSS1043+0855 are briefly discussed.
Including our previous study of SDSS1228+1040, all five white dwarfs with
gaseous debris disks have significant amounts of dust around them. It is
evident that gas and dust can coexist around these relatively warm, relatively

Detection of Weak Circumstellar Gas around the DAZ White Dwarf WD 1124-293: Evidence for the Accretion of Multiple Asteroids
Single metal polluted white dwarfs with no dusty disks are believed to be
actively accreting metals from a circumstellar disk of gas caused by the
destruction of asteroids perturbed by planetary systems. We report, for the
first time, the detection of circumstellar Ca~II gas in absorption around the
DAZ WD~1124-293, which lacks an infrared excess. We constrain the gas to 7
and 32000~AU, and estimate it to be at 54~R,
well within WD~1124-293's tidal disruption radius. This detection is based on
several epochs of spectroscopy around the Ca~II H and K lines
(=3968\AA, 3933\AA) with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan/Clay
Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We confirm the circumstellar nature of
the gas by observing nearby sightlines and finding no evidence for gas from the
local interstellar medium. Through archival data we have measured the
equivalent width of the two photospheric Ca lines over a period of 11 years. We
see 5-7\% epoch-to-epoch variation in equivalent widths over this time
period, and no evidence for long term trends. The presence of a circumstellar
gas implies a near edge-on inclination to the system, thus we place limits to
short period transiting planetary companions with R R using
the WASP survey. The presence of gas in orbit around WD~1124-293 implies that
most DAZs could harbor planetary systems. Since 25-30\% of white dwarfs show
metal line absorption, the dynamical process for perturbing small bodies must

The composition of a disrupted extrasolar planetesimal at SDSS J0845+2257 (Ton 345)
We present a detailed study of the metal-polluted DB white dwarf SDSS J0845+2257 (Ton 345). Using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and Very Large Telescope spectroscopy, we have detected hydrogen and 11 metals in the atmosphere of the white dwarf. The origin of these metals is almost certainly the circumstellar disc of dusty and gaseous debris from a tidally disrupted planetesimal, accreting at a rate of 1.6 × 1010 g s−1. Studying the chemical abundances of the accreted material demonstrates that the planetesimal had a composition similar to the Earth, dominated by rocky silicates and metallic iron, with a low water content. The mass of metals within the convection zone of the white dwarf corresponds to an asteroid of at least ∼130–170 km in diameter, although the presence of ongoing accretion from the debris disc implies that the planetesimal was probably larger than this. While a previous abundance study of the accreted material has shown an anomalously high mass fraction of carbon (15 per cent) compared to the bulk Earth, our independent analysis results in a carbon abundance of just 2.5 per cent. Enhanced abundances of core material (Fe, Ni) suggest that the accreted object may have lost a portion of its mantle, possibly due to stellar wind stripping in the asymptotic giant branch. Time series spectroscopy reveals variable emission from the orbiting gaseous disc, demonstrating that the evolved planetary system at SDSS J0845+2257 is dynamically active
Reproduction as a bottleneck to treeline advance across the circumarctic forest tundra ecotone
Published versionThe fundamental niche of many species is shifting with climate change, especially in
sub-arctic ecosystems with pronounced recent warming. Ongoing warming in sub-arctic
regions should lessen environmental constraints on tree growth and reproduction, leading to increased success of trees colonizing tundra. Nevertheless, variable responses of treeline ecotones have been documented in association with warming temperatures. One explanation for time lags between increasingly favourable environmental conditions and treeline ecotone movement is reproductive limitations caused by low seed availability. Our objective was to assess the reproductive constraints of the dominant tree species at the treeline ecotone in the circumpolar north. We sampled reproductive structures of trees (cones and catkins) and stand attributes across circumarctic treeline ecotones. We used generalized linear mixed models to estimate the sensitivity of seed production and the availability of viable seed to regional climate, stand structure, and species-specific characteristics. Both seed production and viability of available seed were strongly driven by specific, sequential seasonal climatic conditions, but in different ways. Seed production was greatest when growing seasons with more growing degree days coincided with years with high precipitation. Two consecutive years with more growing degree days and low precipitation resulted in low seed production. Seasonal climate effects on the viability of available seed depended on the physical characteristics of the reproductive structures. Large-coned and -seeded species take more time to develop mature embryos and were therefore more sensitive to increases in growing
degree days in the year of flowering and embryo development. Our findings suggest that both moisture stress and abbreviated growing seasons can have a notable negative influence on the production and viability of available seed at treeline. Our synthesis revealed that constraints on pre-dispersal reproduction within the treeline ecotone might create a considerable time lag for range expansion of tree populations into tundra ecosystems
Amyloid and tau pathology associations with personality traits, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive lifestyle in the preclinical phases of sporadic and autosomal dominant Alzheimer’s disease
Background
Major prevention trials for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are now focusing on multidomain lifestyle interventions. However, the exact combination of behavioral factors related to AD pathology remains unclear. In 2 cohorts of cognitively unimpaired individuals at risk of AD, we examined which combinations of personality traits, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive lifestyle (years of education or lifetime cognitive activity) related to the pathological hallmarks of AD, amyloid-β, and tau deposits.
Methods
A total of 115 older adults with a parental or multiple-sibling family history of sporadic AD (PREVENT-AD [PRe-symptomatic EValuation of Experimental or Novel Treatments for AD] cohort) underwent amyloid and tau positron emission tomography and answered several questionnaires related to behavioral attributes. Separately, we studied 117 mutation carriers from the DIAN (Dominant Inherited Alzheimer Network) study group cohort with amyloid positron emission tomography and behavioral data. Using partial least squares analysis, we identified latent variables relating amyloid or tau pathology with combinations of personality traits, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive lifestyle.
Results
In PREVENT-AD, lower neuroticism, neuropsychiatric burden, and higher education were associated with less amyloid deposition (p = .014). Lower neuroticism and neuropsychiatric features, along with higher measures of openness and extraversion, were related to less tau deposition (p = .006). In DIAN, lower neuropsychiatric burden and higher education were also associated with less amyloid (p = .005). The combination of these factors accounted for up to 14% of AD pathology.
Conclusions
In the preclinical phase of both sporadic and autosomal dominant AD, multiple behavioral features were associated with AD pathology. These results may suggest potential pathways by which multidomain interventions might help delay AD onset or progression
Effects of observed and experimental climate change on terrestrial ecosystems in northern Canada: results from the Canadian IPY program
Published VersionTundra and taiga ecosystems comprise nearly 40 % of the terrestrial landscapes of Canada. These permafrost ecosystems have supported humans for more than 4500 years, and are currently home to ca. 115,000 people, the majority of whom are First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The responses of these ecosystems to the regional warming over the past 30–50 years were the focus of four Canadian IPY projects. Northern residents and researchers reported changes in climate and weather patterns and noted shifts in vegetation and other environmental variables. In forest-tundra areas tree growth and reproductive effort correlated with temperature, but seedling establishment was often hindered by other factors resulting in sitespecific responses. Increased shrub cover has occurred in sites across the Arctic at the plot and landscape scale, and this was supported by results from experimental warming. Experimental warming increased vegetation cover and nutrient availability in most tundra soils; however, resistance to warming was also found. Soil microbial diversity in tundra was no different than in other biomes, although there were shifts in mycorrhizal diversity in warming experiments. All sites measured were sinks for carbon during the growing season with expected seasonal and latitudinal patterns. Modeled responses of a mesic tundra system to climate change showed that the sink status will likely continue for the next 50–100 years, after which these tundra systems will likely become a net source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. These IPY studies were the first comprehensive assessment of the state and change in Canadian northern terrestrial ecosystems and showed that the inherent variability in these systems is reflected in their site-specific responses to changes in climate. They also showed the importance of using local traditional knowledge and science, and provided extensive data sets, sites and researchers needed to study and manage the inevitable changes
in the Canadian North
The seeds of divergence: the economy of French North America, 1688 to 1760
Generally, Canada has been ignored in the literature on the colonial origins of divergence with most of the attention going to the United States. Late nineteenth century estimates of income per capita show that Canada was relatively poorer than the United States and that within Canada, the French and Catholic population of Quebec was considerably poorer. Was this gap long standing? Some evidence has been advanced for earlier periods, but it is quite limited and not well-suited for comparison with other societies.
This thesis aims to contribute both to Canadian economic history and to comparative work on inequality across nations during the early modern period. With the use of novel prices and wages from Quebec—which was then the largest settlement in Canada and under French rule—a price index, a series of real wages and a measurement of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are constructed. They are used to shed light both on the course of economic development until the French were defeated by the British in 1760 and on standards of living in that colony relative to the mother country, France, as well as the American colonies.
The work is divided into three components. The first component relates to the construction of a price index. The absence of such an index has been a thorn in the side of Canadian historians as it has limited the ability of historians to obtain real values of wages, output and living standards. This index shows that prices did not follow any trend and remained at a stable level. However, there were episodes of wide swings—mostly due to wars and the monetary experiment of playing card money. The creation of this index lays the foundation of the next component.
The second component constructs a standardized real wage series in the form of welfare ratios (a consumption basket divided by nominal wage rate multiplied by length of work year) to compare Canada with France, England and Colonial America. Two measures are derived. The first relies on a “bare bones” definition of consumption with a large share of land-intensive goods. This measure indicates that Canada was poorer than England and Colonial America and not appreciably richer than France. However, this measure overestimates the relative position of Canada to the Old World because of the strong presence of land-intensive goods. A second measure is created using a “respectable” definition of consumption in which the basket includes a larger share of manufactured goods and capital-intensive goods. This second basket better reflects differences in living standards since the abundance of land in Canada (and Colonial America) made it easy to achieve bare subsistence, but the scarcity of capital and skilled labor made the consumption of luxuries and manufactured goods (clothing, lighting, imported goods) highly expensive. With this measure, the advantage of New France over France evaporates and turns slightly negative. In comparison with Britain and Colonial America, the gap widens appreciably. This element is the most important for future research. By showing a reversal because of a shift to a different type of basket, it shows that Old World and New World comparisons are very sensitive to how we measure the cost of living. Furthermore, there are no sustained improvements in living standards over the period regardless of the measure used. Gaps in living standards observed later in the nineteenth century existed as far back as the seventeenth century. In a wider American perspective that includes the Spanish colonies, Canada fares better.
The third component computes a new series for Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This is to avoid problems associated with using real wages in the form of welfare ratios which assume a constant labor supply. This assumption is hard to defend in the case of Colonial Canada as there were many signs of increasing industriousness during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The GDP series suggest no long-run trend in living standards (from 1688 to circa 1765). The long peace era of 1713 to 1740 was marked by modest economic growth which offset a steady decline that had started in 1688, but by 1760 (as a result of constant warfare) living standards had sunk below their 1688 levels. These developments are accompanied by observations that suggest that other indicators of living standard declined. The flat-lining of incomes is accompanied by substantial increases in the amount of time worked, rising mortality and rising infant mortality. In addition, comparisons of incomes with the American colonies confirm the results obtained with wages— Canada was considerably poorer.
At the end, a long conclusion is provides an exploratory discussion of why Canada would have diverged early on. In structural terms, it is argued that the French colony was plagued by the problem of a small population which prohibited the existence of scale effects. In combination with the fact that it was dispersed throughout the territory, the small population of New France limited the scope for specialization and economies of scale. However, this problem was in part created, and in part aggravated, by institutional factors like seigneurial tenure.
