MUSTANG 3.3 Millimeter Continuum Observations of Class 0 Protostars
We present observations of six Class 0 protostars at 3.3 mm (90 GHz) using
the 64-pixel MUSTANG bolometer camera on the 100-m Green Bank Telescope. The
3.3 mm photometry is analyzed along with shorter wavelength observations to
derive spectral indices (S_nu ~ nu^alpha) of the measured emission. We utilize
previously published dust continuum radiative transfer models to estimate the
characteristic dust temperature within the central beam of our observations. We
present constraints on the millimeter dust opacity index, beta, between 0.862
mm, 1.25 mm, and 3.3 mm. Beta_mm typically ranges from 1.0 to 2.4 for Class 0
sources. The relative contributions from disk emission and envelope emission
are estimated at 3.3 mm. L483 is found to have negligible disk emission at 3.3
mm while L1527 is dominated by disk emission within the central beam. The
beta_mm^disk <= 0.8 - 1.4 for L1527 indicates that grain growth is likely
occurring in the disk. The photometry presented in this paper may be combined

Observations of M87 and Hydra A at 90 GHz
This paper presents new observations of the AGNs M87 and Hydra A at 90 GHz
made with the MUSTANG bolometer array on the Green Bank Telescope at 8.5"
resolution. A spectral analysis is performed combining this new data and
archival VLA data on these objects at longer wavelengths. This analysis can
detect variations in spectral index and curvature expected from energy losses
in the radiating particles. M87 shows only weak evidence for steepening of the
spectrum along the jet suggesting either re-acceleration of the relativistic
particles in the jet or insufficient losses to affect the spectrum at 90 GHz.
The jets in Hydra A show strong steepening as they move from the nucleus
suggesting unbalanced losses of the higher energy relativistic particles. The
difference between these two sources may be accounted for by the different
lengths over which the jets are observable, 2 kpc for M87 and 45 kpc for Hydra

Probabilistic Hierarchical Forecasting with Deep Poisson Mixtures
Hierarchical forecasting problems arise when time series have a natural group
structure, and predictions at multiple levels of aggregation and disaggregation
across the groups are needed. In such problems, it is often desired to satisfy
the aggregation constraints in a given hierarchy, referred to as hierarchical
coherence in the literature. Maintaining hierarchical coherence while producing
accurate forecasts can be a challenging problem, especially in the case of
probabilistic forecasting. We present a novel method capable of accurate and
coherent probabilistic forecasts for hierarchical time series. We call it Deep
Poisson Mixture Network (DPMN). It relies on the combination of neural networks
and a statistical model for the joint distribution of the hierarchical
multivariate time series structure. By construction, the model guarantees
hierarchical coherence and provides simple rules for aggregation and
disaggregation of the predictive distributions. We perform an extensive
empirical evaluation comparing the DPMN to other state-of-the-art methods which
produce hierarchically coherent probabilistic forecasts on multiple public
datasets. Compared to existing coherent probabilistic models, we obtained a
relative improvement in the overall Continuous Ranked Probability Score (CRPS)
of 11.8% on Australian domestic tourism data, and 8.1% on the Favorita grocery

Novel actions of next-generation taxanes benefit advanced stages of prostate cancer.
PURPOSE: To improve the outcomes of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), there is an urgent need for more effective therapies and approaches that individualize specific treatments for patients with CRPC. These studies compared the novel taxane cabazitaxel with the previous generation docetaxel, and aimed to determine which tumors are most likely to respond.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Cabazitaxel and docetaxel were compared via in vitro modeling to determine the molecular mechanism, biochemical and cell biologic impact, and cell proliferation, which was further assessed ex vivo in human tumor explants. Isogenic pairs of RB knockdown and control cells were interrogated in vitro and in xenograft tumors for cabazitaxel response.
RESULTS: The data herein show that (i) cabazitaxel exerts stronger cytostatic and cytotoxic response compared with docetaxel, especially in CRPC; (ii) cabazitaxel induces aberrant mitosis, leading to pyknotic and multinucleated cells; (iii) taxanes do not act through the androgen receptor (AR); (iv) gene-expression profiling reveals distinct molecular actions for cabazitaxel; and (v) tumors that have progressed to castration resistance via loss of RB show enhanced sensitivity to cabazitaxel.
CONCLUSIONS: Cabazitaxel not only induces improved cytostatic and cytotoxic effects, but also affects distinct molecular pathways, compared with docetaxel, which could underlie its efficacy after docetaxel treatment has failed in patients with CRPC. Finally, RB is identified as the first potential biomarker that could define the therapeutic response to taxanes in metastatic CRPC. This would suggest that loss of RB function induces sensitization to taxanes, which could benefit up to 50% of CRPC cases
The Radio - 2 mm Spectral Index of the Crab Nebula Measured with GISMO
We present results of 2 mm observations of the Crab Nebula, obtained using
the Goddard-IRAM Superconducting 2 Millimeter Observer (GISMO) bolometer camera
on the IRAM 30 m telescope. Additional 3.3 mm observations with the MUSTANG
bolometer array on the Green Bank Telescope are also presented. The integrated
2 mm flux density of the Crab Nebula provides no evidence for the emergence of
a second synchrotron component that has been proposed. It is consistent with
the radio power law spectrum, extrapolated up to a break frequency of
log(nu_{b} [GHz]) = 2.84 +/- 0.29 or nu_{b} = 695^{+651}_{-336} GHz. The Crab
Nebula is well-resolved by the ~16.7" beam (FWHM) of GISMO. Comparison to radio
data at comparable spatial resolution enables us to confirm significant spatial
variation of the spectral index between 21 cm and 2 mm. The main effect is a
spectral flattening in the inner region of the Crab Nebula, correlated with the
toroidal structure at the center of the nebula that is prominent in the near-IR

Simulations of partially coherent focal plane imaging arrays: Fisher matrix approach to performance evaluation
Focal plane arrays of bolometers are increasingly employed in astronomy at
far--infrared to millimetre wavelengths. The focal plane fields and the
detectors are both partially coherent in these systems, but no account has
previously been taken of the effect of partial coherence on array performance.
In this paper, we use our recently developed coupled--mode theory of detection
together with Fisher information matrix techniques from signal processing to
characterize the behaviour of partially coherent imaging arrays. We investigate
the effects of the size and coherence length of both the source and the
detectors, and the packing density of the array, on the amount of information

On A. D. Smith's constancy based defence of direct realism
This paper presents an argument against A D Smith's Direct Realist theory of perception, which attempts to defend Direct Realism against the argument from illusion by appealing to conscious perceptual states that are structured by the perceptual constancies. Smith's contention is that the immediate objects of perceptual awareness are characterised by these constancies, which removes any difficulty there may be in identifying them with the external, or normal, objects of awareness. It is here argued that Smith's theory does not provide an adequate defence of Direct Realism because it does not adequately deal with the difficulties posed by the possibility of perceptual illusion. It is argued that there remain possible illusory experiences where the immediate objects of awareness, which in Smith's account are those characterised by perceptual constancies, cannot be identified with the external objects of awareness, contrary to Direct Realism. A further argument is offered to extend this conclusion to all non-illusory cases, by adapting an argument of Smith's own for the generalising step of the Argument from Illusion. The result is that Smith's theory does not provide an adequate Direct Realist account of the possibility of perceptual illusion. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V
90GHz and 150GHz observations of the Orion M42 region. A sub-millimeter to radio analysis
We have used the new 90GHz MUSTANG camera on the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank
Telescope (GBT) to map the bright Huygens region of the star-forming region M42
with a resolution of 9" and a sensitivity of 2.8mJy/beam. 90GHz is an
interesting transition frequency, as MUSTANG detects both the free-free
emission characteristic of the HII region created by the Trapezium stars,
normally seen at lower frequencies, and thermal dust emission from the
background OMC1 molecular cloud, normally mapped at higher frequencies. We also
present similar data from the 150GHz GISMO camera taken on the IRAM telescope.
This map has 15" resolution. By combining the MUSTANG data with 1.4, 8, and
21GHz radio data from the VLA and GBT, we derive a new estimate of the emission
measure (EM) averaged electron temperature of Te = 11376K by an original method
relating free-free emission intensities at optically thin and optically thick
frequencies. Combining ISO-LWS data with our data, we derive a new estimate of
the dust temperature and spectral emissivity index within the 80" ISO-LWS beam
toward OrionKL/BN, Td = 42K and Beta=1.3. We show that both Td and Beta
decrease when going from the HII region and excited OMC1 interface to the
denser UV shielded part of OMC1 (OrionKL/BN, Orion S). With a model consisting
of only free-free and thermal dust emission we are able to fit data taken at

Implications of a High Angular Resolution Image of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect in RXJ1347-1145
The most X-ray luminous cluster known, RXJ1347-1145 (z=0.45), has been the
object of extensive study across the electromagnetic spectrum. We have imaged
the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) at 90 GHz (3.3 mm) in RXJ1347-1145 at 10"
resolution with the 64-pixel MUSTANG bolometer array on the Green Bank
Telescope (GBT), confirming a previously reported strong, localized enhancement
of the SZE 20" to the South-East of the center of X-ray emission. This
enhancement of the SZE has been interpreted as shock-heated (> 20 keV) gas
caused by an ongoing major (low mass-ratio) merger event. Our data support this
interpretation. We also detect a pronounced asymmetry in the projected cluster
pressure profile, with the pressure just east of the cluster core ~1.6 times
higher than just to the west. This is the highest resolution image of the SZE

Proteomic analysis of the postsynaptic density implicates synaptic function and energy pathways in bipolar disorder.
The postsynaptic density (PSD) contains a complex set of proteins of known relevance to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We enriched for this anatomical structure in the anterior cingulate cortex of 16 bipolar disorder samples and 20 controls from the Stanley Medical Research Institute. Unbiased shotgun proteomics incorporating label-free quantitation was used to identify differentially expressed proteins. Quantitative investigation of the PSD identified 2033 proteins, among which 288 were found to be differentially expressed. Validation of expression changes of DNM1, DTNA, NDUFV2, SEPT11 and SSBP was performed by western blotting. Bioinformatics analysis of the differentially expressed proteins implicated metabolic pathways including mitochondrial function, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, protein translation and calcium signaling. The data implicate PSD-associated proteins, and specifically mitochondrial function in bipolar disorder. They relate synaptic function in bipolar disorder and the energy pathways that underpin it. Overall, our findings add to a growing literature linking the PSD and mitochondrial function in psychiatric disorders generally, and suggest that mitochondrial function associated with the PSD is particularly important in bipolar disorder
