Challenges to representing the population from new forms of consumer data
A large share of human activity is now routinely captured and stored by commercial organisations as consumer data. These new forms of data have provided many new and exciting opportunities for understanding population trends at fine spatial scales. In many settings, they have reduced our dependence on theory and traditional modelling approaches and fundamentally changed how geographers approach producing representations of the population. However, consumer data are typically created for commercial benefit and do not have academic standard data quality controls, and so, in repurposing the data for social research, we encounter inherent issues of veracity. Without an understanding of uncertainty, social scientists can risk overstretching consumer datasets beyond the specific populations or phenomena they directly pertain to. Moreover, the technical characteristics of large and complex datasets also make it challenging to generate valid information efficiently. Therefore, this paper reviews the major challenges to harnessing consumer data to produce valid spatial representations of the population at large
To what extent does a regional dialect and accent impact on the development of reading and writing skills?
The issue of whether a regional accent and/or dialect impact(s) on the development of literacy skills remains current in the UK. For decades the issue has dogged debate about education outcomes, portable skills and employability. The article summarizes research on the topic using systematic review methodology. A scoping review was undertaken with the research question ‘To what extent does a regional dialect and accent impact on the development of reading and writing skills?’. The review covers research relevant to the teaching of 5-16 year olds in England, but also draws on research within Europe, the USA, Australia and the Caribbean. The results suggest that curricula have marginalized language variation; that the impact of regional accent and dialect on writing is relatively minor; that young people are adept at style-shifting between standard and non-standard forms; and that inappropriate pedagogical responses to regional variation can have detrimental effects on children’s educational achievement

Three-dimensional reconstruction of autologous vein bypass graft distal anastomoses imaged with magnetic resonance: clinical and research applications
AbstractHigh-resolution magnetic resonance imaging was combined with computational modeling to create focused three-dimensional reconstructions of the distal anastomotic region of autologous vein peripheral bypass grafts in a preliminary series of patients. Readily viewed on a personal computer or printed as hard copies, a detailed appreciation of in vivo postoperative features of the anastomosis is possible. These reconstructions are suitable for analysis of geometric features, including vessel caliber, tortuosity, anastomotic angles, and planarity. Some potential clinical and research applications of this technique are discussed

Absence of spin-mixed states in ferrimagnet Yttrium iron garnet
The spectroscopic g-factor of epitaxial thin film Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) has been studied using a combination of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The values obtained by the two techniques are found, within experimental error, to be in agreement using Kittel's original derivation for the g-factor. For an insulating material with an entirely Fe3+ configuration, a spin mixing correction to Kittel's derivation of the spectroscopic g-factor, as recently shown by Shaw et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 207201 (2021)] for metallic systems, is not required and demonstrates that the spin mixing parameter is small in YIG due to negligible spin-orbit coupling
A systematic autopsy survey of human infant bridging veins
In the first years of life, subdural haemorrhage (SDH) within the cranial cavity can occur through accidental and non-accidental mechanisms as well as from birth-related injury. This type of bleeding is the most common finding in victims of abusive head trauma (AHT). Historically, the most frequent cause of SDHs in infancy is suggested to be traumatic damage to bridging veins traversing from the brain to the dural membrane. However, several alternative hypotheses have been suggested for the cause and origin of subdural bleeding. It has also been suggested by some that bridging veins are too large to rupture through the forces associated with AHT. To date, there have been no systematic anatomical studies on infant bridging veins. During 43 neonatal, infant and young child post-mortem examinations, we have mapped the locations and numbers of bridging veins onto a 3D model of the surface of a representative infant brain. We have also recorded the in situ diameter of 79 bridging veins from two neonatal, one infant and two young children at post-mortem examination. Large numbers of veins, both distant from and directly entering the dural venous sinuses, were discovered travelling between the brain and dural membrane, with the mean number of veins per brain being 54.1 and the largest number recorded as 94. The mean diameter of the bridging veins was 0.93 mm, with measurements ranging from 0.05 to 3.07 mm. These data demonstrate that some veins are extremely small and subjectively, and they appear to be delicate. Characterisation of infant bridging veins will contribute to the current understanding of potential vascular sources of subdural bleeding and could also be used to further develop computational models of infant head injury
