    Effect of Winter Grazing Management of Stockpiled Native Pastures of Basaltic Soils of Uruguay on Daily Gains of Heifers

    The effect of three grazing systems of fall stockpiled native pastures on the winter gains of 66 Hereford heifers (135 kg) was studied. Treatments were: continuos grazing (CG); (C7) the plot was divided in 12 and each was grazed for 7 days and (C28), the plot was divided in 3 and each were grazed for 28 days. Heifers were weighed every 14 days and grazing behaviour was recorded. Stockpiled HM was greater (P\u3c 0.05) in C7 and C28 than in CG (988, 912, and 604 kg DM/ha, respectively). Herbage allowance (HA) was greater (P\u3c 0.01) in CG followed by C28 and C7 (11.7, 6.6 and 5.9 kg DM/100 kg LW, respectively). Post-grazing HM was greater (P0.05) in all pastures (CP 10.2%, NDF 71.2%, ADF 41.3% and ash 14.4%). Final LW of heifers were similar (P\u3e 0.05) (167, 162 and 160 kg for CG, C7 and C28, respectively). A very mild winter favoured exceptional gains which tended to be higher in CG (0.353 kg/day) than in C7 (0.305 kg/day) and C28 (0.278 kg/day). Grazing time was greater (P\u3c 0.05) in CG and bite rate was lower in C28 than in C7 and CG heifers. Grazing management did not affect daily gains. Nevertheless, total remaining HM in C28 and more so in C7 more than doubled that in CG, where more animals could have grazed with increasing total productivity

    Finding iteration patterns in dynamic Web page authoring

The development of dynamic pages is a difficult and costly endeavour, out-of-reach for most users, experts, and content producers. We have developed a set of techniques to support the edition of dynamic web pages in a WYSIWYG environment. In this paper we focus on specific techniques for inferring changes to page generation procedures from users actions on examples of the pages generated by these procedures. More specifically, we propose techniques for detecting iteration patterns in users’ behavior in web page editing tasks involving page structures like lists, tables and other iterative HTML constructs. Such patterns are used in our authoring tool, DESK, where a specialized assistant, DESK-A, detects iteration patterns and generates, using Programming by Example, a programmatic representation of the user’s actions. Iteration patterns help obtain a more detailed characterization of users’ intent, based on user monitoring techniques, that is put in relation to application knowledge automatically extracted by our system from HTML pages. DESK-A relieves end-users from having to learn programming and specification languages for editing dynamic-generated web pages.The work reported in this paper is being supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (MCyT), project number TIC2002-194

    Multimodal collaborative workgroup dataset and challenges

    © 2017, CEUR-WS. All rights reserved. This work presents a multimodal dataset of 17 workgroup sessions in a collaborative learning activity. Workgroups were conformed of two or three students using a tabletop application in a co-located space. The dataset includes time-synchronized audio, video and tabletop system's logs. Some challenges were identified during the collection of the data, such as audio participation identification, and user traces identification. Future work should explore how to overcome the aforementioned difficulties

    Twitter: a useful tool for studying elections?

    The 2015 General Election in the UK was the first to take place in the UK with Twitter as an important part of the social media landscape. This pilot project looked at 16 constituencies along England’s South Coast in order to investigate what impact, if any, Twitter had had on the campaign and the result and to investigate the efficacy, or otherwise, of using Twitter as a tool for studying election campaigns in terms of candidate and local party activism. On the basis of an analysis of almost half a million tweets the analysis concluded that there appeared to be a correlation between the rate at which parties and/or candidates responded to incoming tweets and their relative electoral performance but this was not demonstrable for all parties (it applied in particular to Labour and UKIP candidates). In addition, high rates of reply also appeared to have a positive impact on constituency turnout figures. The findings are not yet conclusive but suggest that Twitter could be a good indicator of general levels of local party activism. The research also sought to understand how candidates used Twitter differently and established a number of candidate ‘classifiers’. It also investigated the issues agenda that was dominating Twitter conversations during the campaign and found that Twitter’s agenda was closer to the public’s than was that of the national media. The research also monitored the regional and local media in the 16 constituencies and discovered that their issues agenda was closer still to the public’s. Overall it is difficult to conclude that Twitter had a major impact on the election campaign

    This is the story of how asbestos is removed in New York City, and who carries out the work. It\u27s unclear how much more asbestos abatement is left in the county, and the U.S. has not completely banned the dangerous material, unlike over 50 other countries across the world. Both of these things could change soon. A new study that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will carry out by December 2024 would give us a better picture of how much asbestos there is still in buildings and how much more removal work is to be done. At the same time, a new bill introduced to the U.S. Senate in May 2022, is trying to ban the last kind of asbestos that is still being used in the country.     Optimal length-constrained segmentation and subject-adaptive learning for real-time arrhythmia detection

    © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery. An algorithm of data segmentation with length constraints for each segment is presented and applied in the context of arrhythmia detection. The additivity property of the cost function for each segment yields the induction proof of the exact global optimal solution. The experiments were conducted on the MIT-BIH arrhythmia dataset with the heartbeat categories recommended by the ANSI/AAMI EC57:1998 standard. The heartbeat classification task is enhanced by an adaptive learning scheme. Incremental support vector machine is used to integrate a small number of expert-annotated samples specific to the subject into the existing classifier previously learned from the dataset. The proposed segmentation scheme obtains the sensitivity of 99.89% and the positive predictivity of 99.83%. The classification sensitivities of ventricular and supraventricular detection are significantly boosted from 85.9% and 83.5% (subject-unadaptive) to 97.7% and 93.2% (subject-adaptive), respectively. Similarly the pre-dictivities increase from 94.8% to 99.3% (ventricular), and from 67.7% to 88.0% (supraventricular) when plugging in the adaptive learning method. The signal processing framework is conducted in a simulated real-time model. As compared to the previously reported studies we achieve a competitive performance in terms of all assessment measures
