    Method of recertifying a loaded bearing member

    A method is described of recertifying a loaded bearing member using ultrasound testing to compensate for different equipment configurations and temperature conditions. The standard frequency F1 of a reference block is determined via an ultrasonic tone burst generated by a first pulsed phased locked loop (P2L2) equipment configuration. Once a lock point number S is determined for F1, the reference frequency F1a of the reference block is determined at this lock point number via a second P2L2 equipment configuration to permit an equipment offset compensation factor Fo1=((F1-F1a)/F1)(1000000) to be determined. Next, a reference frequency F2 of the unloaded bearing member is determined using a second P2L2 equipment configuration and is then compensated for equipment offset errors via the relationship F2+F2(Fo1)/1000000. A lock point number b is also determined for F2. A resonant frequency F3 is determined for the reference block using a third P2L2 equipment configuration to determine a second offset compensation factor F02=((F1-F3)/F1) 1000000. Next the resonant frequency F4 of the loaded bearing member is measured at lock point number b via the third P2L2 equipment configuration and the bolt load determined by the relationship (-1000000)CI(((F2-F4)/F2)-Fo2), wherein CI is a factor correlating measured frequency shift to the applied load. Temperature compensation is also performed at each point in the process

    Nondestructive ultrasonic measurement of bolt preload using the pulsed-phase locked-loop interferometer

    Achieving accurate preload in threaded fasteners is an important and often critical problem which is encountered in nearly all sectors of government and industry. Conventional tensioning methods which rely on torque carry with them the disadvantage of requiring constant friction in the fastener in order to accurately correlate torque to preload. Since most of the applied torque typically overcomes friction rather than tensioning the fastener, small variations in friction can cause large variations in preload. An instrument called a pulsed phase locked loop interferometer, which was recently developed at NASA Langley, has found widespread use for measurement of stress as well as material properties. When used to measure bolt preload, this system detects changes in the fastener length and sound velocity which are independent of friction. The system is therefore capable of accurately establishing the correct change in bolt tension. This high resolution instrument has been used for precision measurement of preload in critical fasteners for numerous applications such as the space shuttle landing gear and helicopter main rotors

    This Note examines the propriety of issue preclusion as applied to a magistrate\u27s factual determination by providing an overview of section 636(c) of the Magistrate Act of 1979 and the decisions holding its provisions constitutional. It briefly looks at the expanded use of issue preclusion, which is largely due to the elimination of the mutuality agreement. After reviewing the policies that are promoted through the use of issue preclusion in such a manner, the Note concludes that nonmutual issue preclusion should apply to a magistrate\u27s determination in a civil trial only if the parties are aware of the consequences that may result when they consent

    The physical basis for Parrondo's games

    Several authors have implied that the original inspiration for Parrondo's games was a physical system called a ``flashing Brownian ratchet''. The relationship seems to be intuitively clear but, surprisingly, has not yet been established with rigor. In this paper, we apply standard finite-difference methods of numerical analysis to the Fokker-Planck equation. We derive a set of finite difference equations and show that they have the same form as Parrondo's games. Parrondo's games, are in effect, a particular way of sampling a Fokker-Planck equation. Physical Brownian ratchets have been constructed and have worked. It is hoped that the finite element method presented here will be useful in the simulation and design of flashing Brownian ratchets.Comment: 10 pages and 2 figure

    Mutual information for examining correlations in DNA

    This paper examines two methods for finding whether long-range correlations exist in DNA: a fractal measure and a mutual information technique. We evaluate the performance and implications of these methods in detail. In particular we explore their use comparing DNA sequences from a variety of sources. Using software for performing in silico mutations, we also consider evolutionary events leading to long range correlations and analyse these correlations using the techniques presented. Comparisons are made between these virtual sequences, randomly generated sequences, and real sequences. We also explore correlations in chromosomes from different species.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Charge redistribution in the formation of one-dimensional lithium wires on Cu(001)

    We describe the formation of one-dimensional lithium wires on a Cu(001) substrate, providing an atomic-scale description of the onset of metallization in this prototypical adsorption system. A combination of helium atom scattering and density-functional theory reveals pronounced changes in the electronic charge distribution on the formation of the c(5√2×√2)R45° Li/Cu(001) structure, as in-plane bonds are created. Charge donation from Li-substrate bonds is found to facilitate the formation of stable, bonded, and depolarized chains of Li adatoms that coexist with an interleaved phase of independent adatoms. The resultant overlayer has a commensurate charge distribution and lattice modulations but differs fundamentally from structurally similar charge-density wave systems

    Investigation of critical burning of fuel droplets

    Fuel droplets were simulated by porous spheres having diameters in the range 0.63 to 1.9 cm and combustion tests were conducted at pressures up to 78 atm in a quiescent cold air environment. Measurements were made of the burning rate and liquid surface temperature during steady combustion. A high pressure flat flame burner apparatus is under development in order to allow testing of high pressure droplet burning in a combustion gas environment. Work was continued on the high pressure strand combustion characteristics of liquid fuels, with the major emphasis on hydrazine. Data was obtained on the burning rate and liquid surface temperatures at pressures in the range 7 to 500 psia. The response of a burning liquid monopropellant to imposed pressure oscillations is being investigated
