Extraversion is a personality trait which has been systematically related to positive affect and well-being. One of the mechanisms that may account for these positive outcomes is the ability to regulate the responses to positive, as well as negative, moods. Prior research has found that extraverts’ higher positive mood maintenance could explain their higher levels of positive affect. However, research exploring differences between extraverts and introverts in negative mood regulation has yielded mixed results. The aim of the current study was explore the role of different facets of mood regulation displayed by extraverts, ambiverts, and introverts. After been exposed to a sad vs. happy mood induction, participants underwent a mood regulation task. Extraverts and ambiverts exhibited higher positive mood regulation than introverts, but similar mood repair. Thus, this research highlights the importance of positive mood regulation in the psychological functioning of extraverts, and opens new conceptualizations for developing interventions for introverts to improve their positive mood regulation and, hence, overall positive affect and well-being.

    Get PDF
A brief review about the Newman-Penrose formalism and the asymptotic structure of the spacetime is given. The goal of this review is to describe the latest developments in these topics and make a summary of the most important articles published by Newman and collaborators. Additionally, we discuss some aspects of this approach, and we compute the spin coefficients and the Weyl scalars for a general stationary axisymmetric spacetimes in a tetrad basis different from that defined by the principal null geodesic directions. It seems almost incredible to believe that, not so long ago, it was uncommon to have a personal computer at home, and even less, an internet connection, but every single day, great advances arise and continue to amaze everyone. Back then, it was impossible to use the internet and the landline at the same time, but now, in only a few years, people walk down the street talking on mobile phones while downloading all kinds of content from the network. It is only natural for large companies to become very interested in this market and that more and more applications and tools, which can be used in these devices, are released. One of the most benefited sectors from this fast improvement is games. Major progresses in the performance and interface of applications have greatly promoted the development of new games and some older ones. The main objective pursued in this project is to develop a game for any kind of mobile device that uses Android. What is most interesting about the game and the application is that it intends to combine a board game with the functionalities of these new technologies. While the physical elements of the board game remain, the application is responsible for managing many aspects of the game play, thus it avoids problems with the understanding of the rules and makes it much easier, fun and comfortable for the players. The following document contains, along with a brief description of the developed game and the goals and challenges pursued with the project, all the information necessary to understand the work done in each of the phases that have been followed, from the previous stages of study, to almost the end of the project

Bayesian joint spatio-temporal analysis of multiple diseases

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a Bayesian hierarchical spatio-temporal model for the joint analysis of multiple diseases which includes specific and shared spatial and temporal effects. Dependence on shared terms is controlled by disease-specific weights so that their posterior distribution can be used to identify diseases with similar spatial and temporal patterns. The model proposed here has been used to study three different causes of death (oral cavity, esophagus and stomach cancer) in Spain at the province level. Shared and specific spatial and temporal effects have been estimated and mapped in order to study similarities and differences among these causes. Furthermore, estimates using Markov chain Monte Carlo and the integrated nested Laplace approximation are compared.Peer Reviewe

The Integrative Positive Psychological Intervention for Depression (IPPI-D).

    Get PDF
Despite the variety of empirically supported treatments for depression, many available evidence-based treatments do not satisfactorily promote or maintain clinically significant changes in patients. Moreover, treatments for depression have been primarily focused on reducing patients' symptoms or deficits and less concerned with building positive resources that seem to be of interest to depressed individuals. This paper describes a manualized protocol of a new empirically-validated positive psychological intervention for depression, which incorporates a balance between hedonic and eudaimonic components and a combination of in-session exercises and homework. The protocol is a 10-session program, in a group format, and includes interventions that have been shown to be effective in increasing well-being or alleviating depressive symptoms. The rationale for developing this protocol, the underlying theoretical framework and some general guidelines for its application are presented. Furthermore, the implications of this protocol are discussed, demonstrating how it overcomes some of the limitations of current, evidence-based psychological treatments for depression.pre-print1087 K

New insights into FoxE1 functions: identification of direct FoxE1 targets in thyroid cells

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.[Background]: FoxE1 is a thyroid-specific forkhead transcription factor essential for thyroid gland development, as well as for the maintenance of the thyroid differentiated state in adults. FoxE1 recognizes and binds to a short DNA sequence present in thyroglobulin (Tg) and thyroperoxidase (Tpo) promoters, but FoxE1 binding to regulatory regions other than Tg and Tpo promoters remains almost unexplored. Improving knowledge of the regulatory functions of FoxE1 is necessary to clarify its role in endocrine syndromes and cancer susceptibility. [Methodology/Principal Finding]:I n order to further investigate downstream FoxE1 targets, we performed a genome-wide expression screening after knocking-down FoxE1 and obtained new insights into FoxE1 transcriptional networks in thyroid follicular cells. After validation, we confirmed Adamts9, Cdh1, Duox2 and S100a4 as upregulated genes and Casp4, Creld2, Dusp5, Etv5, Hsp5a, Nr4a2 and Tm4sf1 as downregulated genes when FoxE1 was silenced. In promoter regions of putative FoxE1-regulated genes and also in the promoters of the classical thyroid genes Nis, Pax8 and Titf1, we performed an in silico search of the FoxE1 binding motif that was in close proximity to the NF1/CTF binding sequence, as previously described for other forkhead factors. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation we detected specific in vivo FoxE1 binding to novel regulatory regions in two relevant thyroid genes, Nis and Duox2. Moreover, we demonstrated simultaneous binding of FoxE1 and NF1/CTF to the Nis upstream enhancer region, as well as a clear functional activation of the Nis promoter by both transcription factors. [Conclusions/Significance]:In search for potential downstream mediators of FoxE1 function in thyroid cells, we identified two novel direct FoxE1 target genes. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence regarding the implication of Nis and Duox2 in executing the transcriptional program triggered by FoxE1. Furthermore, this study points out the important role of FoxE1 in the regulation of a large number of genes in thyroid cells. © 2013 Fernández et al.This work was supported by Grants BFU-2010-16025 from the Dirección General de Proyectos de Investigación; RD06/0020/0060 and RD12/0036/0030 from FIS, Instituto de Salud Carlos III; and S2011/BMD-2328 TIRONET project from the Comunidad de Madrid (Spain). An in silico analysis identifies drugs potentially modulating the cytokine storm triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is one of the biggest health challenges of recent decades. Among the causes of mortality triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection, the development of an inflammatory “cytokine storm” (CS) plays a determinant role. Here, we used transcriptomic data from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of COVID-19 patients undergoing a CS to obtain gene-signatures associated to this pathology. Using these signatures, we interrogated the Connectivity Map (CMap) dataset that contains the effects of over 5000 small molecules on the transcriptome of human cell lines, and looked for molecules which effects on transcription mimic or oppose those of the CS. As expected, molecules that potentiate immune responses such as PKC activators are predicted to worsen the CS. In addition, we identified the negative regulation of female hormones among pathways potentially aggravating the CS, which helps to understand the gender-related differences in COVID-19 mortality. Regarding drugs potentially counteracting the CS, we identified glucocorticoids as a top hit, which validates our approach as this is the primary treatment for this pathology. Interestingly, our analysis also reveals a potential effect of MEK inhibitors in reverting the COVID-19 CS, which is supported by in vitro data that confirms the anti-inflammatory properties of these compounds.Open access funding provided by Karolinska Institute.S

Structured reactors based on 3D Fe/SiC Catalysts: understanding the effects of mixing

The application of structured reactors provides a number of advantages in chemical processes. In this paper, two different three-dimensional (3D) Fe/SiC catalysts with a square cell geometry have been manufactured by Robocasting: monoliths (D = 14 and H = 15 mm) and meshes (D = 24 and H = 2 mm) and studied in the catalytic phenol oxidation by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for the sustainable production of dihydroxybenzenes (DHBZ). The fluid dynamics, catalytic performance, reaction rates, external mass transport limitation, and catalyst stability have been compared in three different reactors, monolithic fixed-bed reactor, multimesh fixed-bed reactor, and monolithic stirrer reactor, at selected operating conditions. The results show that the mechanical stirring of the 3D Fe/SiC monoliths avoids the external mass transfer limitation caused by the presence of oxygen bubbles in the channels (produced from the HOx· species in autoscavenging radical reactions). In addition, the backmixing has a positive effect on the efficient consumption of H2O2 but an adverse effect on the phenol selectivity to DHBZ since they are overoxidized to tar products at longer contact times. On the other hand, the wall porosity, and not the backmixing, affects the susceptibility of the 3D Fe/SiC catalyst to the Fe leaching, as occurs in the mesh structures. In conclusion, the monoliths operating under plug-flow and external mass transfer limitation in the monolithic fixed-bed reactor (MFB) provide an outstanding phenol selectivity to DHBZ and catalyst stabilityThis work is supported by the following agencies and grants: the Spanish Government under projects RTI2018-095052-BI00 (MICINN/AEI/FEDER, UE) and EIN2020-112153 (MCINN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), the latter was also supported by the European Union through “NextGenerationEU/PRTR”, Community of Madrid under project S2018/ EMT-4341, and CSIC project I-COOP+ 2019 (ref COOPB20405).
