A total sample of 99 specimens of the vulnerable fish species Cobitis paludica (de Buen, 1930), was collected on a monthly basis from a tributary of the River Guadalquivir between September 1990 and September 1991. Female longevity was 1 year longer than that of males, the former reaching age-class 5+. The diet of C. paludica consisted mainly of Ostracoda and chironomid larvae, benthic prey of small size and occasionally other resources, such as Macrobiotid eggs spawned during winter. Detritus in gastrointestinal content was scarce, which differs from other populations. Back-calculations of length were performed from scale annuli measurements. The relationship between standard length and scale radius was different for males and females. Females were larger than males of the same age. Both back-calculated length and theoretical length, calculated by applying von Bertalanffy’s model, were larger for females. The relationship between female standard length (SL) and fecundity (F) was log F = 7.465 + 5.5753 log SL

Herramienta de interés para el control y la gestión de pesqueríasThe regulation of minimum legal size(MLS) of catches is a tool widely applied in the management of fisheries resources, although the MLS does not always coincide with the length at first maturit(LFM). The optimization of this management tool requires a series of quality control in fish markets and transportation. A software application has been developed to make the control of the landings of several target species easier and faster. In order to test and make this tool operational, six species of commercial interest were selected: four species of fish hand two species of bivalves. It is proposed to estimate the proportion of illegal specimens in the studied lot from the proportion of illegal individuals found in the samples taken from this lot.The input data for the application are the minimum legal size(MLS) of the species and the total length(TL)of each specimen sampled. The out put data is a statistical summary of the percentage of specimens of size less than the legal minimum(TL<=MLS)within different confidence intervals(90%,95% and 99%). The software developed will serve as a fast, efficient and easy to manage tool that allows inspectors to determine the degree of compliance on MLS control and to make a decision supported by statistical proof on fishing goods

The text offers a tour through different representations of male characters in American generalist television that are beyond the classical representation of the male characters that were depicted as traditionally strong characters, courageous and machos. Considering how American television fiction has a maximum expansion –not only in the US but, also for its strong presence in all Western television, in Spain– we could see the impact that these representations can make in the public in order to build new identitarian points of reference of the masculine, masculinity and virility.

Background and Aims: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices could be useful for real-time management of diabetes therapy. In particular, CGM information could be used in real time to predict future glucose levels in order to prevent hypo-/hyperglycemic events. This article proposes a new online method for predicting future glucose concentration levels from CGM data. Methods: The predictor is implemented with an artificial neural network model (NNM). The inputs of the NNM are the values provided by the CGM sensor during the preceding 20 min, while the output is the prediction of glucose concentration at the chosen prediction horizon (PH) time. The method performance is assessed using datasets from two different CGM systems (nine subjects using the Medtronic [Northridge, CA] Guardian® and six subjects using the Abbott [Abbott Park, IL] Navigator®). Three different PHs are used: 15, 30, and 45 min. The NNM accuracy has been estimated by using the root mean square error (RMSE) and prediction delay. Results: The RMSE is around 10, 18, and 27 mg/dL for 15, 30, and 45 min of PH, respectively. The prediction delay is around 4, 9, and 14 min for upward trends and 5, 15, and 26 min for downward trends, respectively. A comparison with a previously published technique, based on an autoregressive model (ARM), has been performed. The comparison shows that the proposed NNM is more accurate than the ARM, with no significant deterioration in the prediction delay

Cementing proteins provide extra mechanical stabilization to viral cages

The study of virus shell stability is key not only for gaining insights into viral biological cycles but also for using viral capsids in materials science. The strength of viral particles depends profoundly on their structural changes occurring during maturation, whose final step often requires the specific binding of ‘decoration’ proteins (such as gpD in bacteriophage lambda) to the viral shell. Here we characterize the mechanical stability of gpD-free and gpD-decorated bacteriophage lambda capsids. The incorporation of gpD into the lambda shell imparts a major mechanical reinforcement that resists punctual deformations. We further interrogate lambda particle stability with molecular fatigue experiments that resemble the sub-lethal Brownian collisions of virus shells with macromolecules in crowded environments. Decorated particles are especially robust against collisions of a few kBT (where kB is the Boltzmann’s constant and T is the temperature ~300 K), which approximate those anticipated from molecular insults in the environmentWe acknowledge the MINECO of Spain (PIB2010US-00233, FIS3011-29493, Consolider CSD2010-00024, CAMprojectNo.S3009/MAT-1467), and the US National Science Foundation (MCB-1158107) for their financial support of this researc

Palladium-Catalyzed Carbonylative Cyclization of Amines via γ-C(sp3)-H Activation: Late-Stage Diversification of Amino Acids and Peptides

This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in ACS Catalysis, copyright © American Chemical Society after peer review and technical editing by the publisher. To access the final edited and published work see http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acscatal.6b01987The selective γ-C(sp3)-H carbonylation of N-(2-pyridyl)sulfonyl (N-SO2Py)-protected amines has been accomplished by using palladium catalysis and Mo(CO)6 as carbonyl source. The reaction provides a powerful approach for derivatization of amine-based moieties, including amino acids, into richly functionalized γ-lactams. Not only methyl groups, but also methylene C-H bonds of cyclopropanes and conformationally biased molecules can be activated to provide ring-fused γ-lactam derivatives. This carbonylation protocol is also amenable to the late-stage diversification of more-complex multifunctional molecules such as dipeptides and tripeptides, demonstrating the key role of the N-SO2Py as directing group and its capacity to override other inherent substrate coordinating elements. In addition to providing an attractive solution to the difficulties in handling hazardous CO gas, the use of Mo(CO)6 as an air-stable solid source of CO in substoichiometric amount (0.33 equiv) ensures PdII-catalytic activity by preventing its decomposition or deactivation under excess of CO via reduction of PdII to Pd0 or saturation of the metal coordination sphere. Indeed, significantly lower efficiency is observed when the reactions are carried out under CO atmosphere (1 atm), or in the presence of increased amounts of Mo(CO)6. A series of experimental and DFT mechanistic studies provide important insights about the reaction mechanismWe thank the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO, Project No. CTQ2012-35790), and MINECO/FEDER, UE (Project No. CTQ2015-66954-P) for financial support.
