Introduction: Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are allegedly preparing students for a globalized working area where people will need to be ready to communicate effectively in one or more foreign languages in international working environments, which puts a lot of pressure on how foreign languages (FL) are learned in Higher Education (HE).
Methods: This article explores how a FL or learning through a FL could be approached in HEI, focusing mainly on what employers claim in terms of skills of recent graduates or on-the-job workers. Case studies are used, combining interviews to employers and questionnaires to HE students to find out their perceptions on FL learning requirements for greater employability. Conclusions: A series of recommendations are made for HEI on how to promote students’ employability skills; on the best practices for the development of intercultural communicative competence and FL skills to communicate effectively in international or digitally-mediated working environments; as well as on how to prepare the teaching staff for emerging trends that involve using a FL as medium of instruction or CLIL, a content and language integrated approach. These testify to the importance of learning a FL or through a FL, as well as the need to combine transversal skills development in connection to FL learning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
[EN] Ribosome synthesis is an intricate process during which the transcription, modification, folding, and processing of the rRNA precursors (pre-rRNAs) are coordinated to build mature ribosome subunits. This process is driven by more than 200 ribosome biogenesis factors (RBFs) that, together with the pre-rRNAs and ribosomal proteins, form different preribosomal complexes. These complexes migrate from the nucleolus to the cytoplasm as they mature. The composition and structure of preribosomes in human cells are ill-defined and, in the case of those formed in the most internal regions of the nucleolus, this is caused by technical limitations. The main reason for those limitations is that the highly viscous nature of the inner regions of the nucleolus precludes the extraction of the complexes. The first part of this thesis is focused on the generation of tools and the development of extraction methods to characterize early nucleolar preribosomes in human cells. The initial studies were the validation of the PSE extraction method to isolate early preribosomes and the generation of cell lines that endogenously express an early RBF fused to GFP to be used as bait for preribosome purification by affinity chromatography. Using these tools, and a combination of mass-spectrometry compositional analysis and sucrose-gradient sedimentation experiments, it was found that the composition of the preribosomal subcomplex UTP-B and the function of the UTP14A protein are conserved in humans and yeast. The second part of the thesis was devoted to the functional characterization of RRP8, a methyltransferase responsible for the m1A1322 modification in the 28S rRNA. The identification of RBFs that interact with RRP8 and the characterization of the RRP8 knockout phenotype unveiled that this protein forms a module with one 40S subunit RBF that binds to the bipartite preribosome, the initial intermediate that contains the primordial precursors of both the small and large subunits. The RRP8 module is required for the efficient formation of bipartite preribosomes. The complete loss of RRP8 is well tolerated by transformed cell lines, but not by non-transformed cells indicating that its function is essential for the viability of some cell types.
Dream Teens Project in the Promotion of Social Participation and Positive Youth Development of Portuguese Youth
To present a youth participatory
action-research program developed in
Portugal - Dream Teens project, focused
on promoting social participation and
active citizenship, alongside with its
impacts. Methodology: In total, Dream
Teens brought together 147 participants
(girls=66.66%; boys=33.33%). Five studies
were conducted to assess its impact: (i)
pre and post test assessment of actionresearch skills among participants (feelings
and action-oriented competencies,
interpesonal skills, problem solving skills,
humanitarianism and feelings towards life);
(ii) analysis of the most and least prioritized
themes of the program. (iii) interpretation
of the project’s results by core group of participants (iv) interpretation of the
project’s results by stakeholders; (v) actionresearch projects implemented by core
group within their community. A multimethod and multiparticipant approach
was used. Results: Although in the pre and
post-test there are no statistically significant
differences in any action-research skill,
there is a perception of overall improvement
by young people. The most prioritized
themes are associated to the cognitive
and relational levels (in what society and
friends are concerned, respectively); and
the least prioritized is the cognitive level
but only for school-related topics. When
interpreting the results, participants report
positive impacts on personal development,
actions, feelings of social support and
relationships. In turn, stakeholders clarify
that the absence of statistically significant
impacts is common in programs that aim
to promote competencies, that school is
not the main concern of this generation,
and that bureaucracies in accessing
institutions are due to their difficulty in
self-reforming. Two main projects and a
conference emerged from the core group’s
work. Conclusions: results suggest that
participatory research programs with young
people can constitute important resources
to promote the positive development of
33,33%). Se realizaron cinco estudios para
evaluar su impacto: (i) evaluación previa
sociedad y amigos se refiere, respectivamente);
Being Positive, Participative and Flexible: tools to human development and progress
Over the past two decades, it was
largely recognized in the literature that
youth programs and interventions would
have limited impact if they mainly focused
on risks and vulnerabilities. Strengthbased approaches have been found to
be empowering and effective in various
contexts and the interest in preventing youth
problems and promoting healthy youth
development has led practitioners, policy
makers and researchers to develop a wide
range of approaches drawn from several
theoretical frameworks. Contemporary
models of youth development and problem
prevention can be generally grouped into
one of three types: prevention, resilience,
and positive youth development. Each
approach gives a unique contribution to
the knowledge on coping, development, human adaptation, and thriving, and they
all share several key features and a common
vision focused on improving the life of
youths. Furthermore, models focusing
on Positive Youth Development (PYD)
pointed out that “PYD” means either
developmental processes, or a philosophy
to address young people thriving or, finally,
the development of programs promoting
healthy and positive development in youth.
Yet, links and synergies are missing among
these three perspectives. More recently,
integrative models were developed, having
the potential benefit of interconnectedness
of risk, protection and assets, within
the ecological systems affecting human
development, and highlighting the role
and the power of the ecosystems in the
possibility of change, thus increasing
health and well-being, the sense of purpose,
fulfillment and thriving. Furthermore, in
a period of rapid changes, being happy
and not feeling “irrelevant” has to do
with being able to deal with diversity and
change, maintaining and developing
curiosity, and openness to changes and
psychological flexibility, thus considering
change and diversity as opportunities. The
purpose of the present work is to give a
guided tour around theoretical frameworks
and research that ground this conceptual

Environmental Action as Asset and Contribution of Positive Youth Development
Positive Youth Development theory
(PYD) presents a strength-based conception
of transition to adulthood in which
positive outcomes appear as consequence
of the alignment of youth individual skills
and contextual developmental assets.
PYD may emerge from environmental
action because it allows for developing
reasoning skills, decision-making skills,
self-efficacy, optimism, good relationships
and civic engagement, among other
thriving outcomes. Moreover, because
values, attitudes and behaviors formed in this life stage influences those in later life
stages, youth environmental education
deserves greater attention. Developing
youth as active citizens creates positive
environmental and social change that
provides the basis for more sustainable
communities. Considering environmental
action as a context for PYD, educators
or program managers should consider
young people as contributors, letting them
participate in shared decision making,
critical reflection and possibility to
inquiry, as well as providing meaningful
participation, sense of belongness and
authentic care. Some experiences in youth
environmental action are reviewed and
some recommendations are provided in
order to design and implement programs to
jointly promote sustainable communities
and PYDLa teoría del desarrollo positivo
Positive Youth Development and Wellbeing: Gender Differences
The five C’s of positive youth development (PYD) (competence, confidence, character,
caring, and connection) have been associated with adaptive development among young
people. Gender differences in young people’s wellbeing and mental health have been
studied and analyzed, but the investigation into their association with the five C’s is still in
its infancy. In the present study, we analyzed the influence of the five C’s on the wellbeing,
more specifically, anxiety, social alienation, general wellbeing, physical symptoms, and
psychological symptoms, of Portuguese adolescents, by gender. Participants were 5th–
12th grade students attending public schools in Lisbon, Portugal. The questionnaire was
administered to 384 adolescents. The results indicated important gender differences in
young people’s wellbeing. The results revealed some differences between genders that
should be considered in interventions that aim to promote the wellbeing of adolescents.
On the other hand, confidence was positively associated with mental health and
wellbeing for both boys and girls, skill should be promoted among young people,
because it was competence that revealed the greatest association with wellbeing,
among the variables analyzed
