This paper carries out an analysis on the impact caused by the possibility of moving from one degree to another, in a School of Informatics Engineering. That analysis has been carried out by the executive board of the School, at the request of the reports issued for the renewal of the accreditation of the studies. The main conclusions are: i) changing of studies always has a negative impact on the dropout rate, ranging from 3% to 20% ; ii) those changes can be sometimes due to academic reasons, but also to economical reasons since sometimes imply economic savings; iii) approximately one third of our students drop out of their studies of Informatics Engineering; iv) our dropout rate in the last five years has been compliant with the national average in Engineering and Architecture; v) quality indicators systems for degree studies are sometimes not uniform, making difficult an appropriate analysis

Development of an ICP-MS/MS-Based Methodology for the Analysis of (Ultra) Trace Elements in Follicular Fluid Samples of Patients Undergoing IVF Treatment

Introduction: The presence of heavy metals in the environment has been linked to female infertility. Follicular fluid (FF), which surrounds the developing oocyte in the ovary, can provide valuable insights into the content of a number of elements. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that analyze trace elements in FF samples using standardized protocols and methods. The objective of this study was to develop a reliable method utilizing ICP-MS/MS without sample digestion to detect 22 analytes in FF samples. Methods: Four FF samples (n = 4) were obtained from patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. These were adequately aliquoted and processed. They were subsequently analyzed via ICP-MS/MS, both in He and no-gas mode. Finally, the data of interest were compiled in a database. Results: Analyte recovery ranged from 70% to 130%, with better results observed in no-gas mode compared to He mode. Among the 22 elements analyzed, only 9Be, 140Ce, 111Cd, 139La, 208Pb, and 238U were not detected. Minor concentrations were observed for 137Ba, 209Bi, 59Co, 55Mn, 95Mo, 60Ni, 121Sb, 118Sn, 205Tl, and 51V, while intermediate concentrations were found for 7Li and 88Sr. Major concentrations were identified for 52Cr, 85Rb, 47Ti, and 66Zn. Conclusions: A new procedure was developed in this study, with several advantages. One of them is the good results in terms of the recovery of a wide variety of elements using ICP-MS/MS in the poorly studied biological matrix that is follicular fluid. Another advantage is the low amount of sample required to perform the analysis and the development of a green method where the sample is not digested and not diluted, which allowed us to avoid the excessive dilution of the concentration of analytes. Moreover, the developed method provides a novel approach to diagnose and predict health risks in women with gynecological pathologies and to assess their overall health, including reproductive health. This research was funded by the Human Fertility Chair of the University of Alicante

Quantum Confinement of Dirac Quasiparticles in Graphene Patterned with Sub-Nanometer Precision

Quantum confinement of graphene Dirac-like electrons in artificially crafted nanometer structures is a long sought goal that would provide a strategy to selectively tune the electronic properties of graphene, including bandgap opening or quantization of energy levels. However, creating confining structures with nanometer precision in shape, size, and location remains an experimental challenge, both for top-down and bottom-up approaches. Moreover, Klein tunneling, offering an escape route to graphene electrons, limits the efficiency of electrostatic confinement. Here, a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is used to create graphene nanopatterns, with sub-nanometer precision, by the collective manipulation of a large number of H atoms. Individual graphene nanostructures are built at selected locations, with predetermined orientations and shapes, and with dimensions going all the way from 2 nm up to 1 µm. The method permits the patterns to be erased and rebuilt at will, and it can be implemented on different graphene substrates. STM experiments demonstrate that such graphene nanostructures confine very efficiently graphene Dirac quasiparticles, both in 0D and 1D structures. In graphene quantum dots, perfectly defined energy bandgaps up to 0.8 eV are found that scale as the inverse of the dot’s linear dimension, as expected for massless Dirac fermio

Procjena genotoksičnosti insekticida Lannate-90® i njegovih biljnih i životinjskih metabolita u kulturi ljudskih limfocita

This study evaluated direct and metabolic genotoxic effects caused by Lannate-90®, a methomyl-based formulation (90 % active ingredient), in human lymphocyte cultures using sister chromatid exchange assay (SCE). Two processes were used for the plant promutagens evaluation: in vivo activation, applying the insecticide systemically in plants for 4 h and subsequently adding plant metabolites containing extracts to lymphocyte cultures; and in vitro activation, where the insecticide was incubated with Vicia faba S10 mix plus human lymphocyte culture. Direct treatment with the insecticide significantly increased SCE frequency in human lymphocytes (250-750 mg L-1), with cellular death observed at 1000 mg L-1 concentration. Using the extracts of Vicia faba treated with Lannate-90® to treat human lymphocytes, a dose-response relationship was observed. In lymphocyte cultures treated directly with the insecticide for 2 h, a negative response was obtained. When S10 mix was added, SCE frequency did not change significantly. Meanwhile, a mixture of S9 mammalian metabolic mix and Lannate-90® increased the SCE frequency, with an observed concentration-dependent response. Although Lannate-90® induced cellular death at the highest concentrations, it did not cause a delay in cell proliferation in any of the treatments, confirming its genotoxic action. This study is one of the first to evaluate and compare the direct effect of Lannate-90® in two bioassays, animal and vegetal, and the effect of plant and animal metabolism on its genotoxic potential.

This paper presents the results of the analysis of several surveys conducted in three key moments in the training of teachers regarding science education. Before starting the courses, training expectations are heavily influenced by the vision of the chosen specialty. Among the real needs they include the theoretical contents of science, although many students reported their preferences for learning about teaching strategies. Upon completion of the courses, training teachers point out the importance of many more aspects than originally planned, leaving aside the theoretical aspects of science. Finally, after the practicum, many pre-service teachers say that all this has little application in the classroom and show the limited opportunities to implement what they learned in university

9 Páginas.-- 5 Figuras.-- 1 TablaMicrobial community and volatilome of brines were monitored during the spontaneous fermentations of Spanish-style and Natural-style green table olives from Manzanilla cultivar. Fermentation of olives in the Spanish style was carried out by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts, whereas halophilic Gram-negative bacteria and archaea, along with yeasts, drove the fermentation in the Natural style. Clear differences between the two olive fermentations regarding physicochemical and biochemical features were found. Lactobacillus, Pichia, and Saccharomyces were the dominant microbial communities in the Spanish style, whereas Allidiomarina, Halomonas, Saccharomyces, Pichia, and Nakazawaea predominated in the Natural style. Numerous qualitative and quantitative differences in individual volatiles between both fermentations were found. The final products mainly differed in total amounts of volatile acids and carbonyl compounds. In addition, in each olive style, strong positive correlations were found between the dominant microbial communities and various volatile compounds, some of them previously reported as aroma-active compounds in table olives. The findings from this study provide a better understanding of each fermentation process and may help the development of controlled fermentations using starter cultures of bacteria and/or yeasts for the production of high-quality green table olives from Manzanilla cultivar. This work was funded by the Junta de Andalucia (project P20-00071) and the Spanish Government (grant number PID2020-116314RB-I00).
