Can we be satisfied with our football team? Evidence from spanish professional football.

    Get PDF
This paper assesses the sporting performance of Spanish professional football teams at competition level, namely, League, King’s Cup and European competitions (Champions League and UEFA Cup). Then, the gap between the result obtained by a team in a given competition and that expected according to its potential is used as a proxy of the degree of satisfaction that fans should feel: the narrower the gap the greater the level of satisfaction. Regarding methodology, Data Envelopment Analysis techniques and directional distance functions are used. Results reveal that most teams perform rather differently across competitions, the lower average performance corresponding to the King’s CupSpanish football League; specific-competition performance; Data Envelopment Analysis.

The importance of time in referee home bias due to social pressure. Evidence from Spanish football

This paper analyses referee home bias due to social pressure with data from the matches played in the First Division of the Spanish football league between the 2002/03 and 2009/10 seasons. Finally, our main conclusion is that the time the referee has to make a decision does affect the final outcome; while there is no referee home bias when a free kick is awarded, in the case of booking players, when the referee has more time to make a decision, social pressure can influence the final outcome in favour of the home team.Social pressure; crowd effect; referee home bias; sports economics.

DOES SERVICE QUALITY MATTER IN MEASURING PERFORMANCE OF WATER UTILITIES?

Quality is a dimension of water services that has been repeatedly omitted in the study of performance of water utilities. In this paper, we make use of Data Envelopment Analysis techniques (DEA) to compute both conventional quantity-based and quality-adjusted indicators of technical efficiency for a sample of Spanish water utilities. The key assumptions are that a lack of quality (bad quality) can be regarded as a bad output, and the existence of a trade-off between quantity and quality. Our main results indicate that quality matters in measuring technical performance, the difference between conventional and quality-adjusted evaluations representing the opportunity cost of maintaining quality. Averages and distribution functions significantly differ between both assessments of performance, although water utilities do not seem to rank differently.water utilities; quality; Data Envelopment Analysis.

Crime in Colombia: More law enforcement or more justice?

    Get PDF
This study considers the effect that judicial and police efficiency exercised on crime in 25 of the 33 political-administrative divisions in Colombia during the period 2000- 2011. Specifically, the study seeks to determine whether the reduction of crime was the result of increases in the cost of crime as a result of the strengthening of the country’s security forces, especially the National Police, or instead was due to the greater efficiency of the penal system resulting from a structural change stemming from Act 906 of 2004. To view this we propose a model of dynamic panel data that not only includes the individual and temporal effects of the variables of interest, but also allows us to understand the inertia in criminal behavior. The results indicate an inverse relationship between the number of crimes and the greater efficiency of the police and judicial action, which is consistent with the evidence reported in other international work. Robustness checks confirmed the validity of the findings

Current psychological therapeutic approaches for gambling disorder with psychiatric comorbidities: a narrative review

    Get PDF
Background. Although the presence of a gambling disorder (GD) together with another mental disorder poses special treatment challenges, such as relapses, severe outcomes for patients and families, and increased number of hospitalizations, there are only a few critical reviews in the literature. Objective. To review empirical evidence of psychological approaches to cope specifically with these dual disorders. Method. A narrative review of the relevant bibliography on this topic was carried out. A systematic search of original articles (2010-October 2017) was conducted in MEDLINE and PsycInfo. Key terms were: 1. gambling/gamblers, 2. treatment/intervention/therapy/therapeutics, and 3. dual diagnosis/comorbidity. Results. Current treatment for GD involves a number of different options, including inpatient treatments, intensive outpatient therapy, individual and group cognitive-behavioral options (CBT), self-help groups, and pharmacotherapy. Inpatient care is generally limited to patients with severe acute crises, treatment failures, and severe comorbid disorders, particularly depression and attempted suicide. Treatment for GD with other mental disorder needs more research. CBT, motivational enhancement therapy and self-help groups have some empirical support when GD is comorbid with other addiction, mood disorder, or schizophrenia. Programs that combine pharmacotherapy and psychosocial treatments for GD into a single comprehensive package are most likely to have good treatment outcomes, at least with regard to treatment retention. Discussion and conclusion. Interventions should be tailored to the needs of the patients. Future research should be concerned about the statistical power of the studies, implement motivational strategies for patients with poor medication adherence, and design measures to study treatment fidelity in the CBT groups

Nota corta. Aplicación de la ultrasonografía transrectal en el diagnóstico precoz de gestación y evaluación de la mortalidad embrionaria/fetal en ciervas ibéricas mantenidas en granja

[EN]: The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the trans-rectal ultrasonography technique applied to the Iberian red deer hinds since it has not been previously documented in Spain. Experimentation was also used to test the hypothesis that a lower fertility in young hinds could be due to an increment in embryonic or foetal mortality. For this purpose, 116 hinds divided in three groups depending on its age (young, adults and senescent) were examined by rectal ultrasonography and the different foetal structures measured two months after the males were removed from the groups of hinds. With these data, specificity and predictive value of negative diagnoses of the technique has been calculated. Trans-rectal ultrasonography is an accurate technique to use in Iberian red deer dams with overall levels of pregnant detection near to 92%. Finally, the youngest hinds showed poorer fertility rates (17.24% vs. 59.30% and 58.33% of senescent and prime-age respectively) and also higher of embryonic or foetal mortality (2 deaths out of 7 positive pregnant diagnoses compared with no deaths in the senescent group and 4 deaths out of 39 positive pregnant diagnoses in the prime-age group).[ES]: El objetivo principal del presente estudio ha sido evaluar la precisión de la ultrasonografía transrectal aplicada a las ciervas ibéricas, ya que no ha sido documentado previamente en España.

WRF hourly evaluation for extreme precipitation events

    Get PDF
.Precipitation is one of the most relevant fields in atmospheric modeling because of its environmental, social and economic implications. However, precipitation validation from weather model outputs presents substantial challenges, such as measurement uncertainties, use of gridded datasets vs. direct observations, and the selection of statistical goodness-of-fit measures. The main difficulty of working with precipitation is that it can be spatially irregular, especially in extreme events. High temporal aggregation smooths the field and reduces verification uncertainty. For this reason, validations are usually focused on a daily scale. However, many extreme events occur on shorter periods, for which a sub-daily precipitation assessment is required. In this paper, hourly precipitation verification of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is explored for 45 extreme precipitation events (EPEs) recorded in northeastern Spain. For this, stations with recorded EPEs were classified according to the hourly distribution of precipitation. WRF simulations were established considering three microphysics and two planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterizations. Finally, several statistical goodness-of-fit measures and spatial and temporal precipitation distributions were used for evaluating WRF performance. The results showed that microphysics were more important than PBL parameterizations. Goddard and Thompson together with Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi and Nino PBL gave better results for most of the analyzed characteristics. However, an optimal combination of parameterizations was not obtained for all EPEs, because event characteristics had important effects on model performance.S

Long range absorption in the scattering of 6He on 208Pb and 197Au at 27 MeV

    Get PDF
Quasi-elastic scattering of 6He at E_lab=27 MeV from 197Au has been measured in the angular range of 6-72 degrees in the laboratory system employing LEDA and LAMP detection systems. These data, along with previously analysed data of 6He + 208Pb at the same energy, are analyzed using Optical Model calculations. The role of Coulomb dipole polarizability has been investigated. Large imaginary diffuseness parameters are required to fit the data. This result is an evidence for long range absorption mechanisms in 6He induced reactions.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, minor corrections. To appear in Nucl. Phys.
