Absolutely continuous spectrum for the isotropic Maxwell operator with coefficients that are periodic in some directions and decay in others
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the spectrum of an isotropic
Maxwell operator with electric permittivity and magnetic permeability that are
periodic along certain directions and tending to a constant super-exponentially
fast in the remaining directions is purely absolutely continuous. The basic
technical tools is a new ``operatorial'' identity relating the Maxwell operator
to a vector-valued Schrodinger operator. The analysis of the spectrum of that
operator is then handled using ideas developed by the same authors in a
previous paper
Discriminating small wooded elements in rural landscape from aerial photography: a hybrid pixel/object-based analysis approach
While small, fragmented wooded elements do not represent a large surface area in
agricultural landscape, their role in the sustainability of ecological processes is
recognized widely. Unfortunately, landscape ecology studies suffer from the lack
of methods for automatic detection of these elements. We propose a hybrid
approach using both aerial photographs and ancillary data of coarser resolution
to automatically discriminate small wooded elements. First, a spectral and textural
analysis is performed to identify all the planted-tree areas in the digital photograph.
Secondly, an object-orientated spatial analysis using the two data sources
and including a multi-resolution segmentation is applied to distinguish between
large and small woods, copses, hedgerows and scattered trees. The results show the
usefulness of the hybrid approach and the prospects for future ecological
applications
Signature Characters for A_2 and B_2
The signatures of the inner product matrices on a Lie algebra's highest
weight representation are encoded in the representation's signature character.
We show that the signature characters of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra's
highest weight representations obey simple difference equations that have a
unique solution once appropriate boundary conditions are imposed. We use these
results to derive the signature characters of all and highest
weight representations. Our results extend, and explain, signature patterns
analogous to those observed by Friedan, Qiu and Shenker in the Virasoro
algebra's representation theory.Comment: 22 p
Electric field sensing with a scanning fiber-coupled quantum dot
We demonstrate the application of a fiber-coupled quantum-dot-in-a-tip as a
probe for scanning electric field microscopy. We map the out-of-plane component
of the electric field induced by a pair of electrodes by measurement of the
quantum-confined Stark effect induced on a quantum dot spectral line. Our
results are in agreement with finite element simulations of the experiment.
Furthermore, we present results from analytic calculations and simulations
which are relevant to any electric field sensor embedded in a dielectric tip.
In particular, we highlight the impact of the tip geometry on both the

Prospects for Direct CP Violaton in Exclusive and Inclusive Charmless B decays
Within the Standard Model, CP rate asymmetries for could
reach 10%. With strong final state phases, they could go up to 20--30%, even
for mode which would have opposite sign. We can account for
, and rate data with new physics enhanced
color dipole coupling and destructive interference. Asymmetries could reach
40--60% for and modes and are all of the same sign. We are
unable to account for rate. Our inclusive study supports our

Semiclassical measures and the Schroedinger flow on Riemannian manifolds
In this article we study limits of Wigner distributions (the so-called
semiclassical measures) corresponding to sequences of solutions to the
semiclassical Schroedinger equation at times scales tending to
infinity as the semiclassical parameter tends to zero (when this is equivalent to consider solutions to the non-semiclassical
Schreodinger equation). Some general results are presented, among which a weak
version of Egorov's theorem that holds in this setting. A complete
characterization is given for the Euclidean space and Zoll manifolds (that is,
manifolds with periodic geodesic flow) via averaging formulae relating the
semiclassical measures corresponding to the evolution to those of the initial
states. The case of the flat torus is also addressed; it is shown that
non-classical behavior may occur when energy concentrates on resonant
frequencies. Moreover, we present an example showing that the semiclassical
measures associated to a sequence of states no longer determines those of their
evolutions. Finally, some results concerning the equation with a potential are

An HI shell-like structure associated with nova V458 Vulpeculae?
We report the radio detection of a shell-like HI structure in proximity to,
and probably associated with, the nova V458 Vul. High spectral resolution
observation with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope has made it possible to
study the detailed kinematics of this broken and expanding shell. Unlike the
diffuse Galactic HI emission, this is a single velocity component emission with
significant clumping at ~ 0.5' scales. The observed narrow line width of ~ 5
km/s suggests that the shell consists of mostly cold gas. Assuming a distance
of 13 kpc to the system, as quoted in the literature, the estimated HI mass of
the nebula is about 25 M_sun. However, there are some indications that the
system is closer than 13 kpc. If there is a physical association of the HI
structure and the nova system, the asymmetric morphology and the off-centred
stellar system indicates past strong interaction of the mass loss in the
asymptotic giant branch phase with the surrounding interstellar medium. So far,
this is the second example, after GK Per, of a large HI structure associated
