    Efecto de la irradiancia en el crecimiento, fotosíntesis, contenido pigmentario y consumo de nutrientes en cultivos densos de Rhodomonas salina (Wislouch) (Cryptophyceae)

    12 páginas, 5 figuras, 2 tablas.[EN] The effects of different incident irradiances on growth, photosynthesis, pigment content and nutrient uptake were studied in dense cultures of the cryptophyte Rhodomonas salina (Wislouch) Hill y Wetherbee. Cells were grown for ten days at different incident irradiances: 11, 33, 75, 260 and 320 ?mol photon m-2s-1. The average pigment content (phycoerythrin and chlorophyll a) was lower when cells were grown at high irradiances (260 and 320 ?mol photon m-2s-1) compared with cells grown under low irradiances (11, 33 and 75 ?mol photon m-2s-1).The maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) was maximal at 75 ?mol photon m-2s-1 , decreasing considerably at the highest irradiance in which apparent photosynthetic efficiency per cell and per chlorophyll a unit (ᣥll and ᣨla) also decreased. Results showed that dense cultures of R. salina grew optimally in a range between 75 and 260 ?mol photon m-2s-1 with optimal photosynthetic performance at 75 ?mol photon m-2s-1. Nitrogen and phosphorus depletion occurred as a consequence of the exponential growth, except under the lowest and the highest irradiances (11 and 320 ?mol photon m-2s-1, respectively). Associated to N-limitation, phycoerythrin (PE) and chlorophyll a decreased considerably. It is suggested that R.salina responds to nitrogen-depleted conditions by mobilizing nitrogen from PE, this behaviour being modelled by a relationship between external nitrogen availability and PE mobilization.[ES] En este trabajo se analizan los efectos que diferentes irradiancias incidentes tienen en el crecimiento, características fotosintéticas, contenido pigmentario e incorporación de nutrientes en cultivos densos de la criptofita Rhodomonas salina (Wislouch) Hill y Wetherbee. Con tal fin, se mantuvieron cultivos durante diez días bajo distintas condiciones de luz incidente: 11, 33, 75, 260 y 320 µmol fotón m-2s-1. El contenido pigmentario promedio (ficoeritrina y clorofila a) fue menor en células adaptadas a las mayores irradiancias (260 y 320 µmol fotón m-2s-1) en comparación con las adaptadas a las irradiancias menores (11, 33 y 75 µmol fotón m-2s-1). El valor máximo de fotosíntesis (Pmax) se obtuvo para las células adaptadas a 75 µmol fotón m-2s-1, decreciendo considerablemente para la irradiancia máxima ensayada en la que también la eficiencia fotosintética (ácel. and ácla) fue menor. Los resultados muestran que esta criptofita crece óptimamente en cultivos densos en un rango de irradiancias incidentes entre 75 y 260 µmol fotón m-2s-1, con una actividad fotosintética óptima a 75 µmol fotón m-2s-1. Como consecuencia del crecimiento exponencial de los cultivos, se produjo una desaparición paulatina y prácticamente total del nitrógeno y el fósforo del medio, excepto en los cultivos adaptados a las irradiancias máxima (320 µmol fotón m-2s-1) y minima (11 µmol fotón m-2s-1) empleadas. Asociada a tales condiciones de limitación de nitrógeno se observó una disminución del contenido celular de ficoeritrina y clorofila a, definiéndose una clara relación entre la disponibilidad de nitrógeno externo y la tasa de desaparición de ficoeritrina.     Spalling uniaxial strength of Al2O3 at high strain rates

    In this article research into the uniaxial tensile strength of Al2O3 monolithic ceramic is presented. The experimental procedure of the spalling of long bars is investigated from different approaches. This method is used to obtain the tensile strength at high strain rates under uniaxial conditions. Different methodologies proposed by several authors are used to obtain the tensile strength. The hypotheses needed for the experimental set-up are also checked, and the requirements of the set-up and the variables are also studied by means of numerical simulations. The research shows that the shape of the projectile is crucial to achieve successfully tests results. An experimental campaign has been carried out including high speed video and a digital image correlation system to obtain the tensile strength of alumina. Finally, a comparison of the test results provided by three different methods proposed by different authors is presented. The tensile strength obtained from the three such methods on the same specimens provides contrasting results. Mean values vary from one method to another but the trends are similar for two of the methods. The third method gives less scatter, though the mean values obtained are lower and do not follow the same trend as the other methods for the different specimens

    Texture analysis in an apple progeny through instrumental, sensory and histological phenotyping

    Phenotypic analysis of texture traits was performed in an apple progeny by three complementary approaches: two classical instrumental measurements (compression and penetrometry), sensory assessment and histological screening. The progeny was composed of 141 individuals harvested over 2 years. Sensory and instrumental texture were assessed at harvest and after 2 and 4 months of cold storage. Histological screening was performed by combining macro-vision of outer parenchyma sections and image analysis on fruits after 2 months storage. Harvest year was observed to have a major impact on texture phenotypes followed by storage and genetic factors. Principal component analysis of data from the instrumental texture evaluations showed that the two methods complemented each other in characterizing the texture of the apple progeny. Compression parameters correlated better than penetrometry variables with sensory descriptors related to crispness, firmness, and graininess. Cell size distribution differentiated individuals in the apple progeny. It correlated with instrumental texture analyses and with juiciness perception. All measured texture related traits showed that they were all under genetic control with high heritability values. Higher values were obtained for fruits after 2 months storage. These results provide ground for future search of new apple texture QTLs

    Variability of cell wall polysaccharides composition and hemicellulose enzymatic profile in an apple progeny

    The genetic variability of apple cell walls polysaccharides chemical composition and structure was assessed in a progeny of 141 individuals harvested over 2 years. The variability of the hemicelluloses oligosaccharides released by glucanase was analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. The genetic contribution was distinguished from harvest year as well as from parental crossing patterns and scab resistance selection. Results showed that harvest year had a major impact on cell wall polysaccharide composition and structure. Within each harvest, genetic effect impact more significantly cell wall polysaccharide chemistry than does reciprocal crossing or early scab selection. Uronic acids, glucose, galactose and xylose contents as well as some glucomannan and xyloglucan structures have a high heritability. This first cell wall chemotyping of an apple progeny opens the way for future searches of genetic markers for the chemical variability of cell wall polysaccharides

    Stereoscopic three-dimensional visualization applied to multimodal brain images: Clinical applications and a functional connectivity atlas

    Effective visualization is central to the exploration and comprehension of brain imaging data. While MRI data are acquired in three-dimensional space, the methods for visualizing such data have rarely taken advantage of three-dimensional stereoscopic technologies. We present here results of stereoscopic visualization of clinical data, as well as an atlas of whole-brain functional connectivity. In comparison with traditional 3D rendering techniques, we demonstrate the utility of stereoscopic visualizations to provide an intuitive description of the exact location and the relative sizes of various brain landmarks, structures and lesions. In the case of resting state fMRI, stereoscopic 3D visualization facilitated comprehension of the anatomical position of complex large-scale functional connectivity patterns. Overall, stereoscopic visualization improves the intuitive visual comprehension of image contents, and brings increased dimensionality to visualization of traditional MRI data, as well as patterns of functional connectivity

    Parameterized optimized effective potential for atoms

    The optimized effective potential equations for atoms have been solved by parameterizing the potential. The expansion is tailored to fulfill the known asymptotic behavior of the effective potential at both short and long distances. Both single configuration and multi configuration trial wave functions are implemented. Applications to several atomic systems are presented improving previous works. The results here obtained are very close to those calculated in either the Hartree-Fock and the multi configurational Hartree-Fock framework.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Sun exposure and protection habits in transplant athletes: an international survey

    Background: Transplant recipients are particularly prone to the development of skin cancer, and overexposure to UV radiation during outdoor activities increases the risk of carcinogenesis. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze sun-related behaviors and knowledge in transplant athletes, examine the equency of sunburns, and explore associations with a history of skin cancer. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Participants (n = 170) in the XXI World Transplant Games from >50 countries completed a questionnaire on sun protection habits and knowledge, type of transplant, immunosuppressive therapy, and personal history of skin cancer. Results: The most common transplanted organs were the kidney (n = 79), the liver (n = 33), and the heart (n = 31). Overall, 61.3% of athletes had been doing sport for >15 years and 79.5% spent >1–2 h a day outdoors. Fifteen % of athletes had a history of skin cancer. The prevalence of sunburn in the previous year was 28.9%, higher in athletes aged <50 years (37.2%); without a primary school education (58.3%), not taking cyclosporin (32.6%), and athletes who played basketball (75%). The main sun protection measures used were sunscreen (68.9%) and sunglasses (67.3%). Use of a hat or cap was the only measure significantly associated with a reduced prevalence of sunburn. Conclusions: Despite high awareness that sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, sunburn was common in transplant athletes. Efforts should be made to strengthen multidisciplinary sun protection education strategies and ensure periodic dermatologic follow-up to prevent sun-induced skin cancer in this population.This work has been supported by the project no.     Caracterización de morteros con cerámica reciclada y su uso en piezas prefabicadas para entrevigado de forjados

    This study analyses a procedure to manufacture mortars with different percentages of ceramic waste as partial replacement for aggregates. The study also examines the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the new mortars, analysing substitution ratios that range from 10% to 50%. Prior to this, all the materials used in the production of the mortar were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence (XRF). The objective was to determine the similarity between different types of ceramic waste, as well as the differences in the minerology and chemical composition with the aggregate. The results of the study show that it is possible to obtain mortars with lower densities compared to the same product with no recycled content. The product’s characteristics make it ideal for the manufacture of prefabricated components for structural floors for rehabilitation works. Finally, the pieces are used in a real rehabilitation case study, highlightining the structural advantages.Este trabajo analiza morteros con diferentes porcentajes de cerámica reciclada como sustituto parcial de la arena. Además el estudio examina las propiedades físicas, químicas y mecánicas de los nuevos morteros, empleando diferentes porcentajes de sustitución (10% - 50%). Con anterioridad, se caracterizaron todos los materiales empleados en este trabajo mediante difracción y fluorescencia de rayos-X. El objetivo fue determinar las diferencias y similitudes en la composición química y mineralógica de los distintos tipos de residuos cerámicos y del resto de áridos utilizados. Los resultados muestran que es posible obtener morteros con menor densidad frente a las muestras sin contenido reciclado.     Polyolefin fiber-reinforced concrete enhanced with steel-hooked fibers in low proportions

    Over the past few years, polyolefin fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete has shown high performance in both fresh and hardened state. Its fracture behavior for small deformations could be enhanced with a small amount of steel-hooked fibers, obtaining a hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete well suited for structural use. Four types of conventional fiber-reinforced concrete with steel and polyolefin fibers were produced on the basis of the same self-compacting concrete also manufactured as reference. These concrete mixtures were manufactured separately with the same fiber contents being subsequently used for two more hybrid mixtures. Fracture properties, in addition to fresh and mechanical properties, were assessed.     Identifying Ultra-Cool Dwarfs at Low Galactic Latitudes: A Southern Candidate Catalogue

    We present an Ultra-Cool Dwarf (UCD) catalogue compiled from low southern Galactic latitudes and mid-plane, from a cross-correlation of the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS surveys. The catalogue contains 246 members identified from 5042 sq. deg. within 220 deg. <= l <= 360 deg. and 0 deg. < l <= 30 deg., for |b| <= 15 deg. Sixteen candidates are spectroscopically confirmed in the near-IR as UCDs with spectral types from M7.5V to L9. Our catalogue selection method is presented enabling UCDs from ~M8V to the L-T transition to be selected down to a 2MASS limiting magnitude of Ks ~= 14.5 mag. This method does not require candidates to have optical detections for catalogue inclusion. An optimal set of optical/near-IR and reduced proper-motion selection criteria have been defined that includes: an Rf and Ivn photometric surface gravity test, a dual Rf-band variability check, and an additional photometric classification scheme to selectively limit contaminants. We identify four candidates as possible companions to nearby Hipparcos stars -- observations are needed to identify these as potential benchmark UCD companions. We also identify twelve UCDs within a possible distance 20 pc, three are previously unknown of which two are estimated within 10 pc, complimenting the nearby volume-limited census of UCDs. An analysis of the catalogue spatial completeness provides estimates for distance completeness over three UCD MJ ranges, while Monte-Carlo simulations provide an estimate of catalogue areal completeness at the 75 per cent level. We estimate a UCD space density of Rho (total) = (6.41+-3.01)x10^3/pc^3 over the range of 10.5 <= MJ ~< 14.9, similar to values measured at higher Galactic latitudes (|b| ~> 10 deg.) in the field population and obtained from more robust spectroscopically confirmed UCD samples.Comment: MNRAS accepted April 2012.
