Williams’s Defense of Shame as a Moral Emotion

    Get PDF
Section 1 examines four reasons most commonly adduced to support the claim that guilt is superior to shame, both psychologically and morally: a) While guilt expresses a concern for others shame is a self-centered and selfish emotion. b) While guilt appeals to autonomy shame is linked to heteronomy. c) Shame is not a reactive attitude, like guilt, indignation, blame, resentment, but an objective attitude, like disdain or disgust. d) While guilt invites us to second-person responses, shame inhibits them. The second part of the paper (sections 2 and 3) addresses Williams’s analysis of the role of shame in ancient Greek literature and philosophy. Section 2 is dedicated to Williams’s response to the objections concerning selfishness and shallowness and to discussing his reply to the charge that since shame belongs to the objective attitudes it tends to inhibit second-person responses. Section 3 concentrates on Williams’s reflections on heteronomy by focusing on the attitude of others in shame and on the role played by the internalized other

The Myth of the Last Judgment in the Gorgias

In contrast with the standard interpretations of the final myth of judgments in the Gorgias, this article interprets it as a metaphorical way to address the contrast between rhetoric and philosophy. More specifically, the age of Chronos and the age of Zeus are not, according to the author, meant to convey Plato's own views on the afterlife. Rather, they are meant to represent two different attitudes towards life: the rhetorical attitude is exemplified by the age of Chronos, while the philosophical attitude is exemplified by the age of Zeus

In this article I discuss the main reasons why, 22 years after Bernard Williams's Shame and Necessity was published, this book still represents a fundamental source concerning: 1) The nature and history of the concept of shame. 2) A comparative discussion of guilt and shame. 3) A critical reflection on progressive history. 4) A reflection on the relationship between emotions and virtues. 5) A reflection concerning the relationship between philosophy and the ethical life. I argue that Williams, who has often been accused of being a destroyer of theories, had a fundamental insight, which can be expressed negatively, though it was meant to have positive consequences: philosophy ought not to aim at total awareness. I then proceed to present the conceptual structure of the volume of which I am the editor, and to explain the relationship between the different contributions and their respective view of Williams's conception of shame

To eat the body and to drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner : an investigation of the term ἀναξίως in 1 Corinthians 11:27 within the context of 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, with special regard to its interpretation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania-Ulanga Kilombero Diocese

Master's thesis in theology, VID Specialized University, Stavanger, May 2018This study is about giving a proper interpretation the word ἀναξίως as found in 1 Corinthians 11:27 aimed at enabling a proper theological evaluation of the practices surrounding the celebration of the Eucharist in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania – Ulanga Kilombero Diocese (ELCT-UKD). Since theological interpretations determine the different understandings and practices around this sacrament, a proper interpretation of the text, to which 1 Corinthians 11:27 belongs, namely, 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 can lead people into a correct understanding on celebrating Eucharist worthily. The thesis tries to find a proper understanding of the Eucharistic practices in 1 Corinthian 11: 17-34 with the emphasis on the meaning of the term ἀναξίως in verse 27, with the intention of influencing and re-correcting the meaning and practice of Eucharist that affects the Lutheran Church of Tanzania today. The thesis discusses the possibility of a unified Church in partaking of the sacrament of the Eucharist together as members of a Christian community. As a theological biblical work, this is written as a first step to help the church to unite the Christians around the body of Christ, to restore the church to its original form and purpose around the Eucharist. The thesis also urges the church, generally and particularly in the ELCT-UKD, to assess itself and restructure its perspective on both the theological and contextual issues that are related to the partaking in the Eucharist in order to encounter the dynamics of a changing world so that it can be effective in living in accordance to the essence of its being, especially on the issue of the use and application of the means of grace through the sacraments.submittedVersionMV 17 S

Green city? A Grounded Theory Approach

The purpose of this paper is to give a short overview of the planned Master thesis. Since the research for the Master thesis is still in its beginning stages it is not possible to deliver a secluded paper on the chosen topic, this is also not the intention of this paper. The chosen topic is Ljubljana and it's winning the award of the European Green Capital 2016, and the changes that encompass said winning. Also the city of Barcelona will be shortly discussed, as there are changes similar to the ones in Ljubljana. There have been a number of changes that will be listed in this paper, such as cycling and pedestrian networks, waste management, protection of green areas. It is the intention to use Grounded Theory for this research, and the methodology of Grounded Theory will be explained. Therefore the research question at this point is: What do inhabitants of Ljubljana understand by "European Green Capital" and has it an impact on their everyday lives, and if so which and what are the consequences? In this paper however one focus will be on the matter of 'urban sustainability' and after an attempt of a definition of said term, it will be made clear why the Master thesis research focus will not be on this discussion. To conclude an outlook will be given on what the next steps should be

Regarding Alessandra Fussi’s book La città nell’anima the article offers a discussion on Leo Strauss’ interpretation of Plato’s and Xenophon’s works. Irony, skepticism and the nature of the dialogs as a philosophical work are all questioned

Identification of varieties and gene flow in Douglasfir exemplified in artificially established stands in Germany

Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] is an economicallyvaluable non-native tree species in Germany and is considered verypromising in view of global climate change. Therefore, the genetic characterization of Douglas-fir populations and seed stands in Germany is essential. We studied coastal and interior Douglas-fir varieties, both presentin Germany, by using eleven isoenzyme and four microsatellite loci. Byanalyzing eight reference populations of known origin we were able toidentify the two varieties on the population level using Bayesian and distance based methods. Seven populations present in Bavaria were then successfully assigned to one of the two varieties. Within varieties we found stronger grouping within the interior variety than within the coastal one. Despite lower differences within coastal Douglas-fir we have first indications for the origin of two populations. For two Bavarian populations, natural regeneration was included and genetic data revealed no significant genetic difference between adults and offspring. The parentage analysis for one of the studied stands revealed that a large proportion of adults took part in the reproduction, but some trees were more successful than othersin transferring their genes to the next generation. Our study was ableto improve variety identification of Douglas-fir using isoenzyme markers and nuclear microsatellites and study reproductive patterns, both are important issues for the management of Douglas-fir stands in Bavaria
