New routes to novel oeganofluorine compounds
Use of the carbon hydrogen bond as a functional group in free radical addition reactions to fluorinated olefins has been studied. Using cyclic ethers a detailed investigation of the products obtained revealed that not only carbon hydrogen bonds a to oxygen but also the β and γ carbon hydrogen bonds reacted. Employing hydrocarbons, clean free radical addition reactions initiated by either γ rays or peroxides were observed. Whereas aliphatic hydrocarbons gave reasonable yields, cyclic hydrocarbons gave nearly complete conversions. Some modifications of polyethylene using fluorinated olefins and fluorinated ketones proved successful. Free radical reactions of tributyltin hydride with fluoro-olefins gave quantitative yields of new tributyl fluoroalkyltin compounds. Employing partly fluorinated ethers, amines and hydrocarbons exhaustive fluorinations using two different techniques were carried out. Photofluorination gave good yields of the corresponding perfluorinated compounds and a new apparatus, making this technique more generally applicable was designed. Electrochemical fluorination also gave remarkably good yields of perfluorinated products. This demonstrated the suitability of partly fluorinated compounds for further fluorination to perfluorinated derivatives by these techniques
Strain measurement at the knee ligament insertion sites
We describe the modification of an existing method of ligament strain measurement at the knee joint in detail. At ten fresh joint specimens we used that technique where strain gauges are attached to the ligamentous insertions and origins. We both improved the preparation of the attachment site and the application of the strain gauges. In a special apparatus the specimens were moved from 0degrees extension to 100degrees flexion while simulating muscle strength and axial force. Testing was performed at the posterior cruciate ligament with both intact and transsected anterior cruciate ligament. In contrast to other existing techniques it does not affect the motion of the joint or the integrity and the function of the ligaments. Unlike the original description of that method we could register a loading behaviour of the posterior cruciate ligament that is similar to those reported in the literature
Permits vs. Offsets Under Investment Uncertainty
A global crediting mechanism would enable developing countries without binding emissions reduction targets to participate in the international carbon market. Linking the framework on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) as an offset program to major cap-and-trade programs is a particularly promising approach to increase both climate finance and cost-efficiency. However, the coexistence of permits and offsets also creates a classic case of interaction effects. In this paper, we explore how the availability of multiple compliance instruments affects energy investment incentives. Alternative trading and linkage schemes are compared using a real options model of firm-level investment decisions under stochastic prices and the ability to delay investments. We first isolate the critical design factors that drive private investments in the energy sector. We then identify policy regimes that balance the different concerns in the polarized debate for and against the inclusion of forest carbon offsets
Loschmidt echo and stochastic-like quantum dynamics of nano-particles
We investigate time evolution of prepared vibrational state (system) coupled
to a reservoir with dense spectrum of its vibrational states. We assume that
the reservoir has an equidistant spectrum, and the system - reservoir coupling
matrix elements are independent of the reservoir states. The analytical
solution manifests three regimes of the evolution for the system: (I) weakly
damped oscillations; (II) multicomponent Loschmidt echo in recurrence cycles;
(III) overlapping recurrence cycles. We find the characteristic critical values
of the system - reservoir coupling constant for the transitions between these
regimes. Stochastic dynamics occurs in the regime (III) due to inevoidably in
any real system coarse graining of time or energy measurements, or initial
condition uncertainty. Even though a specific toy model is investigated here,
when properly interpreted it yields quite reasonable description for a variety

Deep-sea predator niche segregation revealed by combined cetacean biologging and eDNA analysis of cephalopod prey
Fundamental insight on predator-prey dynamics in the deep sea is hampered by a lack of combined data on hunting behavior and prey spectra. Deep-sea niche segregation may evolve when predators target specific prey communities, but this hypothesis remains untested. We combined environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding with biologging to assess cephalopod community composition in the deep-sea foraging habitat of two top predator cetaceans. Risso’s dolphin and Cuvier’s beaked whale selectively targeted distinct epi/meso- and bathypelagic foraging zones, holding eDNA of 39 cephalopod taxa, including 22 known prey. Contrary to expectation, extensive taxonomic overlap in prey spectra between foraging zones indicated that predator niche segregation was not driven by prey community composition alone. Instead, intraspecific prey spectrum differences may drive differentiation for hunting fewer, more calorific, mature cephalopods in deeper waters. The novel combination of methods presented here holds great promise to disclose elusive deep-sea predator-prey systems, aiding in their protection
Radiation exposure of adrenal vein sampling: a German Multicenter Study
Objective: Adrenal vein sampling (AVS) represents the current diagnostic standard for subtype differentiation in primary aldosteronism (PA). However, AVS has its drawbacks. It is invasive, expensive, requires an experienced interventional radiologist and comes with radiation exposure. However, exact radiation exposure of patients undergoing AVS has never been examined. Design and methods: We retrospectively analyzed radiation exposure of 656 AVS performed between 1999 and 2017 at four university hospitals. The primary outcomes were dose area product (DAP) and fluoroscopy time (FT). Consecutively the effective dose (ED) was approximately calculated. Results: Median DAP was found to be 32.5Gy*cm(2) (0.3-3181) and FT 18 min (0.3-184). The calculated ED was 6.4 mSv (0.1-636). Remarkably, values between participating centers highly varied: Median DAP ranged from 16 to 147 Gy*cm(2), FT from 16 to 27 min, and ED from 3.2 to 29 mSv. As main reason for this variation, differences regarding AVS protocols between centers could be identified, such as number of sampling locations, frames per second and the use of digital subtraction angiographies. Conclusion: This first systematic assessment of radiation exposure in AVS not only shows fairly high values for patients, but also states notable differences among the centers. Thus, we not only recommend taking into account the risk of radiation exposure, when referring patients to undergo AVS, but also to establish improved standard operating procedures to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure
