This investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect of age and strain on haematological and gasometric parameters in selected and non-selected broiler chickens. Forty selected and 10 nonselected male broiler chickens were used. Blood samples were withdrawn at 21 and 42 days of age, and haematological parameters were determined including (red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH) and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)) and gasometric pH, partial pressure of oxgen (p 0 2) and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pC02) were determined. The results showed that almost all studied parameters are affected by broiler strain and age. Selected broiler shown lower red blood cell (RBC) count and higher mean cell volume (MCV) at 21 days of age, when compared to that of 42 day old animals, and an inverse relation was verified by non-selected broiler. These data suggest that selected broiler chickens could have higher sensitivity to alterations in pulmonary rheological parameters at early age, and triggering the ascite’s syndrome.

ObjectiveWe evaluated the extent to which frailty mediated the association between age, poor functional outcomes, and mortality after acute ischemic stroke when patients were treated with brain reperfusion (thrombolytic therapy and/or thrombectomy).Materials and methodsThis retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke who had undergone intravenous cerebral reperfusion therapy and/or mechanical thrombectomy. We created a mediation model by analyzing the direct natural effect of an mRS score > 2 and death on age-mediated frailty according to the Frailty Index.ResultsWe enrolled 292 patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent brain reperfusion. Their mean age was 67.7 ± 13.1 years. Ninety days after the stroke ictus, 54 (18.5%) participants died, and 83 (28.4%) lived with moderate to severe disability (2 < mRS < 6). In the mediation analysis of the composite outcome of disability (mRS score > 2) or death, frailty accounted for 28% of the total effect of age. The models used to test for the interaction between age and frailty did not show statistically significant interactions for either outcome, and the addition of the interaction did not significantly change the direct or indirect effects, nor did it improve model fit.ConclusionFrailty mediated almost one-third of the effect of age on the composite outcome of disability or death after acute ischemic stroke

Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

Test anxiety (TA) and academic procrastination (AP), are motives of counsulting frequentlly asociated with another mental simpthoms. To estimate more accurately this commorbidity, 219 students of the National University of Cordoba, completed inventories of mental simpthoms, TA and AP. A multivariate analysis of variance with groups of 1) Highly TA and AP (n= 75), 2) highly TA and low AP (n= 40), 3) low TA and highly AP (n= 38) and 4) low TA and AP (n= 66) showed diffrerences between the three simpthomatic scales (negativeness - low self seteem; tension, irritability – indecision and suspicacy – alucination) between the four groups. Group 1 obteined higher scores to the other groups in the scales. Non significative diffrerences were found between groups 2 and 3. Group 4 showed lower scores to group 2 and 3 but the diffrenecies were of little significance. Implicances to diagnosis and treatment of both conditions are discussed

Software for modeling effluent emissions in rivers

    No full text
This work presents a three-dimensional model for the dispersion of effluents in rivers using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. There are several models in the literature, some of which even analyze complex flows. They are however restricted to small river sections. The main contribution of this work is that it proposes a new software capable of predicting the dispersion of effluents in very large open channels. The model is very fast, an unusual feature of CFD models. Due to this, it is possible to predict the dispersion of substances in long sections of rivers with some kilometers in extension. Moreover, multiple emissions can be analyzed by the model, allowing its use as a predictive tool to analyze and guide management decisions on future industrial installations near rivers. Results for the dispersion of an inert emission in a river near Campinas (Brazil) were used to validate the model.
