The GeV-TeV Connection in Galactic gamma-ray sources
Recent observations with atmospheric Cherenkov telescope systems such as
H.E.S.S. and MAGIC have revealed a large number of new sources of
very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays from 100 GeV - 100 TeV, mostly concentrated
along the Galactic plane. At lower energies (100 MeV - 10 GeV) the
satellite-based instrument EGRET revealed a population of sources clustering
along the Galactic Plane. Given their adjacent energy bands a systematic
correlation study between the two source catalogues seems appropriate. Here,
the populations of Galactic sources in both energy domains are characterised on
observational as well as on phenomenological grounds. Surprisingly few common
sources are found in terms of positional coincidence and spectral consistency.
These common sources and their potential counterparts and emission mechanisms
will be discussed in detail. In cases of detection only in one energy band, for
the first time consistent upper limits in the other energy band have been
derived. The EGRET upper limits are rather unconstraining due to the
sensitivity mismatch to current VHE instruments. The VHE upper limits put
strong constraints on simple power-law extrapolation of several of the EGRET
spectra and thus strongly suggest cutoffs in the unexplored energy range from
10 GeV - 100 GeV. Physical reasons for the existence of cutoffs and for
differences in the source population at GeV and TeV energies will be discussed.
Finally, predictions will be derived for common GeV - TeV sources for the
upcoming GLAST mission bridging for the first time the energy gap between

Front-End electronics configuration system for CMS
The four LHC experiments at CERN have decided to use a commercial SCADA
(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) product for the supervision of their
DCS (Detector Control System). The selected SCADA, which is therefore used for
the CMS DCS, is PVSS II from the company ETM. This SCADA has its own database,
which is suitable for storing conventional controls data such as voltages,
temperatures and pressures. In addition, calibration data and FE (Front-End)
electronics configuration need to be stored. The amount of these data is too
large to be stored in the SCADA database [1]. Therefore an external database
will be used for managing such data. However, this database should be
completely integrated into the SCADA framework, it should be accessible from
the SCADA and the SCADA features, e.g. alarming, logging should be benefited
from. For prototyping, Oracle 8i was selected as the external database manager.
The development of the control system for calibration constants and FE
electronics configuration has been done in close collaboration with the CMS
tracker group and JCOP (Joint COntrols Project)(1).

A construction for a counterexample to the pseudo 2-factor isomorphic graph conjecture
A graph admiting a -factor is \textit{pseudo -factor isomorphic} if
the parity of the number of cycles in all its -factors is the same. In [M.
Abreu, A.A. Diwan, B. Jackson, D. Labbate and J. Sheehan. Pseudo -factor
isomorphic regular bipartite graphs. Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B,
98(2) (2008), 432-444.] some of the authors of this note gave a partial
characterisation of pseudo -factor isomorphic bipartite cubic graphs and
conjectured that , the Heawood graph and the Pappus graph are the only
essentially -edge-connected ones. In [J. Goedgebeur. A counterexample to the
pseudo -factor isomorphic graph conjecture. Discr. Applied Math., 193
(2015), 57-60.] Jan Goedgebeur computationally found a graph on
vertices which is pseudo -factor isomorphic cubic and bipartite,
essentially -edge-connected and cyclically -edge-connected, thus refuting
the above conjecture. In this note, we describe how such a graph can be
constructed from the Heawood graph and the generalised Petersen graph
, which are the Levi graphs of the Fano configuration and the
M\"obius-Kantor configuration, respectively. Such a description of
allows us to understand its automorphism group, which has order
, using both a geometrical and a graph theoretical approach

DETERMINATION OF THE PARTIAL PRESSURE OF HALOTHANE (OR ISOFLURANE) IN BLOOD
A gas chromatographic method is described for the direct quantitative determination of the partial pressure of halothane {or isoflurane) in blood as well as the blood-gas partition coefficient. A head space technique and a flame ionization detector were used. Standard blood was obtained by equilibrating patients' blood with known gas concentrations in a tonometer. Using an infra-red analyser to measure the halothane gas concentration in the tonometer and within the anaesthetic system allowed for the direct comparison of the partial pressure in blood to the partial pressure in the inspired gas. Screening for childhood anaemia using copper sulphate densitometry
Objective. To evaluate copper sulphate densitometry to screen for childhood anaemia in a primary care setting, with a view to identifying children requiring definitive diagnostic testing and treatment.
Design. A cross-sectional screening study. Results of densitometry with a copper sulphate solution of specific gravity (SG) 1.048, corresponding to a haemoglobin (Hb) concentration of 10 g/dl, were compared with laboratory Hb determination.
Setting. Outpatient department of Pretoria Academic Hospital (73 children) and a local cr_che (27 children).
Subjects. One hundred consecutive children, aged between 6 months and 6 years, with informed written consent by parents.
Outcome measure(s). Accuracy of copper sulphate densitometry in screening for Hb concentration below 10 g/dl in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, as well as likelihood ratio.
Results. The prevalence of anaemia (Hb < 10 g/dl) was 17% (95% confidence interval (CI) 10.2; 25.8). Copper sulphate densitometry had a sensitivity of 88.2% (95% CI 62.3; 97.9), a specificity of 89.2% (95% CI 79.9; 94.6), a positive predictive value of 62.5% (95% CI 40.8; 80.5) and a negative predictive value of 97.4% (95%CI 90.0; 99.5) in screening for anaemia. The likelihood ratio of a positive screening test was 8.17.
Conclusions. Copper sulphate densitometry was accurate in screening for childhood anaemia.

Actions of the braid group, and new algebraic proofs of results of Dehornoy and Larue
This article surveys many standard results about the braid group with
emphasis on simplifying the usual algebraic proofs.
We use van der Waerden's trick to illuminate the Artin-Magnus proof of the
classic presentation of the algebraic mapping-class group of a punctured disc.
We give a simple, new proof of the Dehornoy-Larue braid-group trichotomy,
and, hence, recover the Dehornoy right-ordering of the braid group.
We then turn to the Birman-Hilden theorem concerning braid-group actions on
free products of cyclic groups, and the consequences derived by Perron-Vannier,
and the connections with the Wada representations. We recall the very simple
Crisp-Paris proof of the Birman-Hilden theorem that uses the Larue-Shpilrain
technique. Studying ends of free groups permits a deeper understanding of the
braid group; this gives us a generalization of the Birman-Hilden theorem.
Studying Jordan curves in the punctured disc permits a still deeper
understanding of the braid group; this gave Larue, in his PhD thesis,
correspondingly deeper results, and, in an appendix, we recall the essence of
Larue's thesis, giving simpler combinatorial proofs.Comment: 51`pages, 13 figure
XMM-Newton observations of HESS J1813-178 reveal a composite Supernova remnant
We present X-ray and 12CO(J=1-0) observations of the very-high-energy (VHE)
gamma-ray source HESS J1813-178 with the aim of understanding the origin of the
gamma-ray emission. Using this dataset we are able to undertake spectral and
morphological studies of the X-ray emission from this object with greater
precision than previous studies. NANTEN 12CO(J=1-0) data are used to search for
correlations of the gamma-ray emission with molecular clouds which could act as
target material for gamma-ray production in a hadronic scenario. The NANTEN
12CO(J=1-0) observations show a giant molecular cloud of mass 2.5 10^5
M_{\sun} at a distance of 4 kpc in the vicinity of HESS J1813-178. Even
though there is no direct positional coincidence, this giant cloud might have
influenced the evolution of the gamma-ray source and its surroundings. The
X-ray data show a highly absorbed non-thermal X-ray emitting object coincident
with the previously known ASCA source AX J1813-178 showing a compact core and
an extended tail towards the north-east, located in the centre of the radio
shell-type Supernova remnant (SNR) G12.82-0.2. This central object shows
morphological and spectral resemblance to a Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) and we
therefore consider that the object is very likely to be a composite SNR. We
discuss the scenario in which the gamma-rays originate in the shell of the SNR
and the one in which they originate in the central object. We demonstrate, that
in order to connect the core X-ray emission to the VHE gamma-ray emission
electrons have to be accelerated to energies of at least 1 PeV.Comment: Submitted to A&
The use of quantitative Real-Time PCR to estimate Salmonella shed in fecal samples from naturally infected finishing pigs
The objective of this study was to describe the shedding pattern of Salmonella in finishing pigs, as well to quantify the Salmonella load. A longitudinal study was conducted in 12 cohorts of pigs in a multi-site farrow-to-finish production system. At the beginning of each cohort, 50 pigs (10 ± 2 weeks old) were randomly selected and individually identified. Individual pig fecal samples were collected and cultured every 2 weeks for 16 weeks (8 collections)
