Antennas for the detection of radio emission pulses from cosmic-ray induced air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is exploring the potential of the radio detection technique to study extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) addresses both technological and scientific aspects of the radio technique. A first phase of AERA has been operating since September 2010 with detector stations observing radio signals at frequencies between 30 and 80 MHz. In this paper we present comparative studies to identify and optimize the antenna design for the final configuration of AERA consisting of 160 individual radio detector stations. The transient nature of the air shower signal requires a detailed description of the antenna sensor. As the ultra-wideband reception of pulses is not widely discussed in antenna literature, we review the relevant antenna characteristics and enhance theoretical considerations towards the impulse response of antennas including polarization effects and multiple signal reflections. On the basis of the vector effective length we study the transient response characteristics of three candidate antennas in the time domain. Observing the variation of the continuous galactic background intensity we rank the antennas with respect to the noise level added to the galactic signal

A century of trends in adult human height

Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5-22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3-19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8-144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries

Neufassung von DIN 18041 - ein Weckruf für gute Raumakustik

Der Zeitpunkt für eine grundlegende Erneuerung von DIN 18041 "Hörsamkeit in kleinen bis mittelgroßen Räumen" könnte nicht passender als gerade jetzt sein. Sie dient der raumakustischen Auslegung für Sprachkommunikation als der anspruchsvollsten Art der Raumnutzung, wenn die in diesem Aufsatz aufgeführten Mängel in der Endfassung der Norm berücksichtigt werden. Daß gute Raumakustik auch unter den ökonomischen Randbedingungen der anhaltenden Rezession im Baugeschehen möglich ist, zeigt eine Reihe von ausgeführten Beispielen bei Neubauten wie bei Sanierungen

Geräusche in der Heiztechnik

Die schalltechnischen Anforderungen der DIN 4109 koennen heute hinsichtlich der Frischwasser-Installation weitgehend durch den Einsatz von nach DIN 52 218 geprueften und entsprechend gekennzeichneten, geraeuscharmen Armaturen erfuellt werden. Hinsichtlich der Heizungs-Installation wirft auch die neue Fassung der DIN 4109 eine Reihe kritischer Fragen auf, weil es - im Gegensatz zu den Schallquellen bei der Frischwasser-Installation - fuer Umwaelzpumpen und Heizkoerper-Ventile bisher keine einheitliche und verbindliche Messvorschrift gibt.
