Non-linear terms in 2D cosmology
In this work we investigate the behavior of two-dimensional (2D) cosmological
models, starting with the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) theory of gravitation. A
geometrical term, non-linear in the scalar curvature , is added to the JT
dynamics to test if it could play the role of dark energy in a 2D expanding
universe. This formulation makes possible, first, the description of an early
(inflationary) 2D universe, when the van der Waals (vdW) equation of state is
used to construct the energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational sources.
Second, it is found that for later times the non-linear term in can
generate an old 2D universe in accelerated expansion, where an ordinary matter
dominated era evolves into a decelerated/accelerated transition, giving to the
dark energy effects a geometrical origin. The results emerge through numerical
analysis, following the evolution in time of the scale factor, its

Micro-optic lens for data storage
A new type of microlens for data storage applications that has improved off-axis performance is described. The lens consists of a micro Fresnel pattern on a curved substrate. The radius of the substrate is equal to the focal length of the lens. If the pattern and substrate are thin, the combination satisfies the Abbe sine condition. Therefore, the lens is free of coma. We analyze a 0.5 numerical aperture, 0.50 mm focal length lens in detail. A 0.16 numerical aperture lens was fabricated holographically, and results are presented
Adiabatic limit and the slow motion of vortices in a Chern-Simons-Schr\"odinger system
We study a nonlinear system of partial differential equations in which a
complex field (the Higgs field) evolves according to a nonlinear Schroedinger
equation, coupled to an electromagnetic field whose time evolution is
determined by a Chern-Simons term in the action. In two space dimensions, the
Chern-Simons dynamics is a Galileo invariant evolution for A, which is an
interesting alternative to the Lorentz invariant Maxwell evolution, and is
finding increasing numbers of applications in two dimensional condensed matter
field theory. The system we study, introduced by Manton, is a special case (for
constant external magnetic field, and a point interaction) of the effective
field theory of Zhang, Hansson and Kivelson arising in studies of the
fractional quantum Hall effect. From the mathematical perspective the system is
a natural gauge invariant generalization of the nonlinear Schroedinger
equation, which is also Galileo invariant and admits a self-dual structure with
a resulting large space of topological solitons (the moduli space of self-dual
Ginzburg-Landau vortices). We prove a theorem describing the adiabatic
approximation of this system by a Hamiltonian system on the moduli space. The
approximation holds for values of the Higgs self-coupling constant close to the
self-dual (Bogomolny) value of 1. The viability of the approximation scheme
depends upon the fact that self-dual vortices form a symplectic submanifold of
the phase space (modulo gauge invariance). The theorem provides a rigorous

Designing skid trail systems to reduce soil impacts from tractive logging machines
Logging on skid trails restricted to 10 percent or less of the harvested stand can reduce the area of compacted soil by at least two-thirds, In a comparative study, productivity of Douglas-fir logs per hour was just as great In an area with designated trails as In an adjacent area logged conventionally. Logging on designated trails required more winching time, but this increase was offset by a reduction In skidding time. Furthermore, there was less damage to residual trees on the area with designated trails. The use of such trails Is economical and efficient if trees are felled to the lead of the trail
Risk Assessment to the Health of Amazonian Indigenous For the Consumption of Fish, Meat of Hunts and Vegetables Containing Metylmercury
This study was to evaluate the exposure to methylmercury (HgMe) and the potential health risk of Tupari Indians through the consumption of their main foods. Were collection of samples of plant foods and muscle tissue from different species of fish and wild animals consumed in three villages of the Rio Branco Indigenous Land in Rondônia, in the Brazilian Amazon. The HgMe was measured in an atomic fluorescence spectrophotometer with gas chromatography. The statistical treatment of the data was performed by software R. Of the six different plant species, only sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) had mean concentrations of HgMe above the limit of detection of the analytical technique for the three villages. There was a significant difference in the levels of HgMe between the species of wild animals and fish belonging to the same alimentary habit. Carnivores presented higher levels of HgMe than those obtained for non-predators, both for fish and for wild animals. The results of the assessment of the potential risk to indigenous health indicated a total HgMe of the weekly ingestion rate (WIR) of between 8.4 and 15.0 μg / kg of body weight for the villages evaluated, extrapolating all reference doses ( RfD) regarding for the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI). The risk quotients (RQ) varied from 5.3 to 21.4, considerably exceeding the limit (RQ ≤ 1), which allows to consider the impossibility of toxic effects of HgMe. The fishes accounted for the highest percentage of WIR of HgMe for all villages, with an emphasis on predatory species. Considering the nutritional value of fish meat, it is suggested the continuity of the consumption of this meat in the villages with preference for non-carnivores
Experimental removals reveal dietary niche partitioning facilitates coexistence between native and introduced species
Niche overlap between native species and ecologically similar invaders can lead to competitive exclusion of threatened native species, but if two such species also co-occur naturally elsewhere, interactions between native and introduced populations may mirror coevolved niche partitioning that reduces competition and promotes coexistence.A single, insular population of Fremont's squirrel (Tamiasciurus fremonti) the Mount Graham red squirrel (MGRS; T. f. grahamensis) in the Pinaleño Mountains, Arizona, USA, is critically endangered and resource competition with introduced Abert's squirrels (Sciurus aberti) may threaten its long-term persistence. The species are naturally synoptic in other mountain sites, and both consume diets comprised primarily of conifer seeds and fungi.We conducted experimental removals of introduced Abert's squirrels and used stable isotope analysis of diets before and after removals, and of diets in naturally syntopic populations to test the hypothesis that dietary niche partitioning can facilitate coexistence between native and introduced species. We also developed a novel approach to determine the influence of fluctuating food availability on carbon enrichment in consumers.Mount Graham red squirrels and introduced Abert's squirrels partitioned the dietary niche similarly to naturally syntopic populations. Removals had no apparent effect. Diet of MGRS was more closely linked to availability of resources than to presence of Abert's squirrels.Flexible dietary niche of introduced Abert's squirrels may have allowed them to exploit a resource opportunity in syntopy with MGRS. Variable food production of MGRS habitat may intensify competition in poor years, and territorial defense against non-native Abert's squirrels likely imposes fitness costs on individual MGRS. Similarity in our model species' diets may make MGRS more vulnerable to competition if climate change eliminates the advantages of larder-hoarding. Roots of the derivative of the Riemann zeta function and of characteristic polynomials
We investigate the horizontal distribution of zeros of the derivative of the
Riemann zeta function and compare this to the radial distribution of zeros of
the derivative of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix.
Both cases show a surprising bimodal distribution which has yet to be
explained. We show by example that the bimodality is a general phenomenon. For
the unitary matrix case we prove a conjecture of Mezzadri concerning the
leading order behavior, and we show that the same follows from the random
matrix conjectures for the zeros of the zeta function.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure
An advertising aesthetic: Real beauty and visual impairment
This article considers critical responses to disability in 20th-century Anglo-American advertisements from which a problematic advertising aesthetic emerges. The aesthetic is used to test the progressiveness of a recent trilogy of Dove advertisements that represents visual impairment. The conclusion is that while there has been much progress, the ableist advertising aesthetic of decades ago remains an issue in the 21st century. More specifically, the Dove advertisements are found to be underpinned by ocularcentrism, despite their apparent appreciation of visual impairment
