[EN] The reuse of food chain residues is topical. This revaluation can extract bioactive compounds from these residues. However, extraction involves chemicals that cause environmental damage. In the present work, an experimental design with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) has been carried out for extracting bioactive compounds from orange peel residues. NADES have a very low environmental impact. The tests were performed with five different NADES, mixed with 70% water. The results were compared with ethanol¿water 50%, v:v, showing that NADES solvents provided better extraction of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity.

Holocene changes in deep-water circulation of the Western Mediterranean Basin, links to North Atlantic climate variability

preliminary results from multicores recovered in the Minorca sediment drift, south of the Western Mediterranean Deep Water formation area, reveal changes in deep-water circulation during the last 2500 yr. Records of grain-size and SST Mg/Ca derived from G. bulloides show oscillations in deep-water current intensities that could be related to cool periods on land, i.e. the Little Ice Age, but also denote some relationship with changes in sea surface salinity likely associated with changes in continental humid conditions

Holocene climate variability in the Western Mediterranean region from a deep water sediment record

The detailed analysis of the International Marine Past Global Changes Study core MD99-2343 recovered from a sediment drift at 2391 m water depth north of the island of Minorca illustrates the effects of climate variability on thermohaline circulation in the western Mediterranean during the last 12 kyr. Geochemical ratios associated with terrigenous input resulted in the identification of four phases representing different climatic and deepwater overturning conditions in the Western Mediterranean Basin during the Holocene. Superimposed on the general trend, eight centennial- to millennial-scale abrupt events appear consistently in both grain size and geochemical records, which supports the occurrence of episodes of deepwater overturning reinforcement in the Western Mediterranean Basin. The observed periodicity for these abrupt events is in agreement with the previously defined Holocene cooling events of the North Atlantic region, thus supporting a strong Atlantic-Mediterranean climatic link at high-frequency time intervals during the last 12 kyr. The rapid response of the Mediterranean thermohaline circulation to climate change in the North Atlantic stresses the importance of atmospheric teleconnections in transferring climate variability from high latitudes to midlatitudes

Immunotherapy; Lung neoplasms; Tumor biomarkersImmunoteràpia; Càncer de pulmó; Biomarcadors tumoralsInmunoterapia; Cáncer de pulmón; Biomarcadores tumoralesBackground Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting the programmed cell death 1/programmed death-ligand 1 axis have transformed the management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, many patients do not benefit from this type of treatment, and thus several molecular biomarkers of benefit have been explored. The value of somatic copy number alterations (SCNAs) burden remains elusive. Patients and methods We assembled a cohort of 109 patients with NSCLC treated with ICIs and available tumor samples. We performed shallow whole-genome sequencing on 89 patients to determine genome-wide SCNAs and targeted gene expression analysis on 63 patients to study immune infiltration. We analyzed SCNAs burden in different ways (ie, the fraction of the genome altered or number of events) and studied their association with ICIs benefit based on survival analysis. We correlated SCNAs burden and immune infiltration on 35 patients of our cohort and on patients with lung adenocarcinoma from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Results High SCNAs burden, computed in diverse ways, is negatively associated with ICIs progression-free survival (PFS), with the fraction of the genome altered (FGA) by arm and chromosome events showing the strongest association with PFS (p=0.002) (n=77). Nevertheless, we found differences in SCNAs across some clinicopathological features (sample site origin). A multivariate analysis adjusted for relevant characteristics showed that the FGA of arm and chromosome alterations was strongly associated with PFS (HR=2.21, p=3.3 x 10−5). Finally, we confirmed that SCNAs burden negatively correlates with tumor immune infiltration (n=35), although this correlation was not found for the males studied. Similar results were observed in the TCGA cohort. Conclusions SCNAs burden is a potential biomarker of benefit to ICIs in patients with NSCLC, although there appear to be some nuances worth consideration. Further studies will be needed to establish its role as a biomarker of benefit to ICIs.This work was supported by Merck Healthcare KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany (Grant for Oncology Innovation to the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), Barcelona, Spain), Fundación Cientifica Asociación Española Contra el Cancer-AECC (grant number GCB14142170 to EF); the Catalan Government/AGAUR (2017–SGR–1738 to EF).
