The baculovirus anti-apoptotic p35 protein promotes transformation of mouse embryo fibroblasts.

The baculovirus p35 protein is a potent inhibitor of programmed cell death induced by a variety of stimuli in insects, nematodes, and mammalian cell lines. The broad ability of p35 in preventing apoptosis has led us to investigate its effect on mouse embryo fibroblasts in vitro and in vivo. For this purpose, we have used R- cells (3T3-like fibroblasts derived from mouse embryos with a targeted disruption of the insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-IR) genes) and R508 cells (derived from R- and with 15 x 10(3) IGF-IRs per cell). Both cell lines grow normally in monolayer, but they do not form colonies in soft agar, and they are non-tumorigenic in nude mice. We show here that, in addition to its anti-apoptotic effect, p35 causes transformation of R508 cells, as evidenced by the following: 1) decreased growth factor requirements, 2) ability to form foci in monolayer and colonies in soft agar, and 3) ability to form tumors in nude mice. Since R- cells stably transfected with p35 do not transform, our observations suggest that in addition to its effect as an inhibitor of apoptosis, the baculovirus p35 protein has transforming potential that requires the presence of the IGF-IR. The possibility that these two properties could be separated was confirmed by demonstrating that R508 cells expressing another anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2, could not form tumors in nude mice

Dynamic scaling for 2D superconductors, Josephson junction arrays and superfluids

The value of the dynamic critical exponent zz is studied for two-dimensional superconducting, superfluid, and Josephson Junction array systems in zero magnetic field via the Fisher-Fisher-Huse dynamic scaling. We find z≃5.6±0.3z\simeq5.6\pm0.3, a relatively large value indicative of non-diffusive dynamics. Universality of the scaling function is tested and confirmed for the thinnest samples. We discuss the validity of the dynamic scaling analysis as well as the previous studies of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition in these systems, the results of which seem to be consistent with simple diffusion (z=2z=2). Further studies are discussed and encouraged.Comment: 19 pages in two-column RevTex, 8 embedded EPS figure

The purpose of this study is to review the evidence in the scientiic literature on technical analysis applications in financial markets. In the empirical literature are the irst studies to analyze the usefulness of technical analysis, more recent studies applied to the international market and finally, studies developed for the Colombian market. Some of these studies provide important implications for market eficiency.El propósito de este estudio es revisar las evidencias en la literatura cientíica sobre las aplicaciones del análisis técnico en los mercados financieros. Is histologic esophagitis associated with dental erosion: a cross-sectional observational study?

Abstract Background Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects 15–25% of children and adolescents in the United States. The diagnosis of GERD in children is complex as reported symptoms or symptom profiles have been found to be unreliable. Frequently, the diagnosis must be confirmed by objective tests such as pH monitoring or histological evidence of esophagitis on an esophageal biopsy. Dental erosion has been shown to be associated with GERD as an atypical complication and has the potential to be a marker of GERD. The purposes of this study were to compare the frequency and patterns of dental erosion in children and adolescents with and without histologic esophagitis. Methods Twenty-five subjects were recruited from patients scheduled for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Information regarding potential GERD symptoms, food habits, and dental hygiene habits were obtained. Intra-oral photographs were taken, and a dental exam for erosion was performed. The results of a standard biopsy taken from the lower third of the esophagus during an endoscopy were used to divide subjects into either the control group or the GERD group (i.e. those with histologic esophagitis). Results Twenty-two subjects yielded 586 evaluable teeth. No significant difference was found between frequency or erosion patterns of those with and without histologic esophagitis. Dental erosions were more frequent in primary teeth. Conclusions Dental erosions do not appear to be associated with histologic esophagitis indicative of GERD
