Temporal influence over the Last.fm social network
In a previous result, we showed that the influence of social contacts spreads information about new artists through the Last.fm social network. We successfully decomposed influence from effects of trends, global popularity, and homophily or shared environment of friends. In this paper, we present our new experiments that use a mathematically sound formula for defining and measuring the influence in the network. We provide new baseline and influence models and evaluation measures, both batch and online, for real-time recommendations with very strong temporal aspects. Our experiments are carried over the 2-year âscrobbleâ history of 70,000 Last.fm users. In our results, we formally define and distil the effect of social influence. Lectures on Linear Stability of Rotating Black Holes
These lecture notes are concerned with linear stability of the non-extreme
Kerr geometry under perturbations of general spin. After a brief review of the
Kerr black hole and its symmetries, we describe these symmetries by Killing
fields and work out the connection to conservation laws. The Penrose process
and superradiance effects are discussed. Decay results on the long-time
behavior of Dirac waves are outlined. It is explained schematically how the
Maxwell equations and the equations for linearized gravitational waves can be
decoupled to obtain the Teukolsky equation. It is shown how the Teukolsky
equation can be fully separated to a system of coupled ordinary differential
equations. Linear stability of the non-extreme Kerr black hole is stated as a
pointwise decay result for solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Teukolsky
equation. The stability proof is outlined, with an emphasis on the underlying

Some remarks on a new exotic spacetime for time travel by free fall
This work is essentially a review of a new spacetime model with closed causal
curves, recently presented in another paper (Class. Quantum Grav.
\textbf{35}(16) (2018), 165003). The spacetime at issue is topologically
trivial, free of curvature singularities, and even time and space orientable.
Besides summarizing previous results on causal geodesics, tidal accelerations
and violations of the energy conditions, here redshift/blueshift effects and

General practitioner provision of preventive child health care: analysis of routine consultation data
<b>Background</b> GPs contribute to preventive child health care in various ways, including provision of child health
surveillance (CHS) reviews, opportunistic preventive care, and more intensive support to vulnerable children. The
number of CHS reviews offered in Scotland was reduced from 2005. This study aimed to quantify GPsâ provision of
different types of preventive care to pre-school children before and after the changes to the CHS system.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> GP consultation rates with children aged 0â4 years were examined for the 2½ years before and after the
changes to the CHS system using routinely available data from 30 practices in Scotland. Consultations for CHS
reviews; other aspects of preventive care; and all reasons were considered.<p></p>
<b>Results:</b> Prior to the changes to the CHS system, GPs often contributed to CHS reviews at 6â8 weeks and 8â9 and
39â42 months. Following the changes, GP provision of the 6â8 week review continued but other reviews
essentially ceased. Few additional consultations with pre-school children are recorded as involving other aspects of
preventive care, and the changes to CHS have had no impact on this. In the 2½ years before and after the changes,
consultations recorded as involving any form of preventive care accounted for 11% and 7.5% respectively of all
consultations with children aged 0â4 years, with the decline due to reductions in CHS reviews.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions:</b> Effective preventive care through the early years can help children secure good health and
developmental outcomes. GPs are well placed to contribute to the provision of such care. Consultations focused on
preventive care form a small minority of GPsâ contacts with pre-school children, however, particularly since the
reduction in the number of CHS reviews
Functional polymorphisms in the P2X7 receptor gene are associated with stress fracture injury
Context: Military recruits and elite athletes are susceptible to stress fracture injuries. Genetic predisposition has been postulated to have a role in their development. The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) gene, a key regulator of bone remodelling, is a genetic candidate that may contribute to stress fracture predisposition.
Objective: To evaluate the putative contribution of P2X7R to stress fracture injury in two separate cohorts, military personnel and elite athletes.
Methods: In 210 Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) military conscripts, stress fracture injury was diagnosed (n=43) based on symptoms and a positive bone scan. In a separate cohort of 518 elite athletes, self-reported medical imaging scan-certified stress fracture injuries were recorded (n=125). Non-stress fracture controls were identified from these cohorts who had a normal bone scan or no history or symptoms of stress fracture injury. Study participants were genotyped for functional SNPs within the P2X7R gene using proprietary fluorescence-based competitive allele-specific PCR assay. Pearson Chi-square (Ď2) tests, corrected for multiple comparisons, were used to assess associations in genotype frequencies.
Results: The variant allele of P2X7R SNP rs3751143 (Glu496Ala- loss of function) was associated with stress fracture injury, while the variant allele of rs1718119 (Ala348Thr- gain of function) was associated with a reduced occurrence of stress fracture injury in military conscripts (P<0.05). The association of the variant allele of rs3751143 with stress fractures was replicated in elite athletes (P<0.05), whereas the variant allele of rs1718119 was also associated with reduced multiple stress fracture cases in elite athletes (P<0.05).
Conclusions: The association between independent P2X7R polymorphisms with stress fracture prevalence supports the role of a genetic predisposition in the development of stress fracture injury
Kerr-AdS and its Near-horizon Geometry: Perturbations and the Kerr/CFT Correspondence
We investigate linear perturbations of spin-s fields in the Kerr-AdS black
hole and in its near-horizon geometry (NHEK-AdS), using the Teukolsky master
equation and the Hertz potential. In the NHEK-AdS geometry we solve the
associated angular equation numerically and the radial equation exactly. Having
these explicit solutions at hand, we search for linear mode instabilities. We
do not find any (non-)axisymmetric instabilities with outgoing boundary
conditions. This is in agreement with a recent conjecture relating the
linearized stability properties of the full geometry with those of its
near-horizon geometry. Moreover, we find that the asymptotic behaviour of the
metric perturbations in NHEK-AdS violates the fall-off conditions imposed in
the formulation of the Kerr/CFT correspondence (the only exception being the

Retinal Biomarker Discovery for Dementia in an Elderly Diabetic Population
Dementia is a devastating disease, and has severe implications on affected individuals, their family and wider society. A growing body of literature is studying the association of retinal microvasculature measurement with dementia. We present a pilot study testing the strength of groups of conventional (semantic) and texture-based (non-semantic) measurements extracted from retinal fundus camera images to classify patients with and without dementia. We performed a 500-trial bootstrap analysis with regularized logistic regression on a cohort of 1,742 elderly diabetic individuals (median age 72.2). Age was the strongest predictor for this elderly cohort. Semantic retinal measurements featured in up to 81% of the bootstrap trials, with arterial caliber and optic disk size chosen most often, suggesting that they do complement age when selected together in a classifier. Textural features were able to train classifiers that match the performance of age, suggesting they are potentially a rich source of information for dementia outcome classification
Effect of maternal Schistosoma mansoni infection and praziquantel treatment during pregnancy on Schistosoma mansoni infection and immune responsiveness among offspring at age five years.
INTRODUCTION: Offspring of Schistosoma mansoni-infected women in schistosomiasis-endemic areas may be sensitised in-utero. This may influence their immune responsiveness to schistosome infection and schistosomiasis-associated morbidity. Effects of praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni during pregnancy on risk of S. mansoni infection among offspring, and on their immune responsiveness when they become exposed to S. mansoni, are unknown. Here we examined effects of praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni during pregnancy on prevalence of S. mansoni and immune responsiveness among offspring at age five years. METHODS: In a trial in Uganda (ISRCTN32849447, http://www.controlled-trials.com/ISRCTN32849447/elliott), offspring of women treated with praziquantel or placebo during pregnancy were examined for S. mansoni infection and for cytokine and antibody responses to SWA and SEA, as well as for T cell expression of FoxP3, at age five years. RESULTS: Of the 1343 children examined, 32 (2.4%) had S. mansoni infection at age five years based on a single stool sample. Infection prevalence did not differ between children of treated or untreated mothers. Cytokine (IFNÎł, IL-5, IL-10 and IL-13) and antibody (IgG1, Ig4 and IgE) responses to SWA and SEA, and FoxP3 expression, were higher among infected than uninfected children. Praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni during pregnancy had no effect on immune responses, with the exception of IL-10 responses to SWA, which was higher in offspring of women that received praziquantel during pregnancy than those who did not. CONCLUSION: We found no evidence that maternal S. mansoni infection and its treatment during pregnancy influence prevalence and intensity of S. mansoni infection or effector immune response to S. mansoni infection among offspring at age five years, but the observed effects on IL-10 responses to SWA suggest that maternal S. mansoni and its treatment during pregnancy may affect immunoregulatory responsiveness in childhood schistosomiasis. Gauging the Effectiveness of Educational Technology Integration in Education: What the Best-Quality Meta-Analyses Tell Us
This chapter examines quantitative research in the literature of technology integration in education from the perspective of the meta-analyses of primary studies conducted from 1982 to 2015. The intent is to identify and review the best of these meta-analyses. Fifty-two meta-analyses were originally identified and evaluated for methodological quality using the Meta-Analysis Methodological Quality Review Guide (MMQRG), and the best 20 were selected and are included for review here. Some describe the effects of technology integration within specific content areas and some are more general. Technology integration in education is one of the most fluid areas of research, reflecting the incredible pace of the evolution of computer-based tools and applications. Just navigating through the vast primary empirical literature presents a real challenge to those interested in evaluating the educational effectiveness of technology. Systematic reviews in the field are numerous and quite diverse in their methodological quality, introducing potential bias in the interpretation of findings (Bernard RM, Borokhovski E, Schmid RF, Tamim RM. J Comput High Educ 26(3):183â209, 2014), thus bringing into question their applied value. This chapter identifies and reviews the best of these meta-analyses. In addition to overall statistical analyses of this collection, the findings of six of the most recent and best meta-analyses (after 2010) are summarized in more detail. The discussion focuses on the interpretation of the current findings, considers future alternatives to primary research in this area, and examines how meta-analysts might address them
Impact of Single Links in Competitive Percolation -- How complex networks grow under competition
How a complex network is connected crucially impacts its dynamics and
function. Percolation, the transition to extensive connectedness upon gradual
addition of links, was long believed to be continuous but recent numerical
evidence on "explosive percolation" suggests that it might as well be
discontinuous if links compete for addition. Here we analyze the microscopic
mechanisms underlying discontinuous percolation processes and reveal a strong
impact of single link additions. We show that in generic competitive
percolation processes, including those displaying explosive percolation, single
links do not induce a discontinuous gap in the largest cluster size in the
thermodynamic limit. Nevertheless, our results highlight that for large finite
systems single links may still induce observable gaps because gap sizes scale
weakly algebraically with system size. Several essentially macroscopic clusters
coexist immediately before the transition, thus announcing discontinuous
percolation. These results explain how single links may drastically change
