    Las Vias: Creating Pathways to Graduation

    Rowan College of South Jersey - Cumberland campus (previously Cumberland County College) implemented the Las Vias - Pathways to Graduation program, with required Touch Points to guide students to credential completion over the past 5 years. Graduation rates have increased 19% for Hispanic students, 9% for African American students and 13% for all students. Vías hacia la Graduación, a Title V grant funded program established Academic Pathways, a team of bilingual Student Development Advisors, and an Early Alert system to raise Flags, report Attendance, and Kudos. Hispanic/ Latino and African American students, First Generation and Pell recipients demonstrated progress toward graduation. The Las Vias program implemented the Take the Lead Summer Bridge and NASPA-Certified Peer Mentor programs providing additional student engagement. Cumberland\u27s completion and transfer rates have been among the highest in the region. Attendees will learn to produce data informed increased student success employing an interactive audience approach

    Myriophyllum heterophyllum presents an overall high phytosanitary risk for the EPPO region with a low uncertainty rating. The overall likelihood of M. heterophyllum continuing to enter the EPPO region is high. The plant is imported into the EPPO region as a misidentified aquatic species for aquaria and ponds and is already established in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. The risk of entry into other EPPO countries through import is considered high. The risk of the species establishing in additional countries is high as movement through irrigation and river systems acts to connect countries, facilitating spread regionally. Spread may be accelerated by recreational activities in water bodies invaded by the weed. Impacts of the species within the EPPO region are likely to be severe (high score rating), including aquatic plant species displacement, habitat dominance and effects on other aquatic organisms

    Alternanthera philoxeroides presents a high phytosanitary risk for the EPPO region with a low uncertainty rating. A. philoxeroides is already present in the EPPO region in France and Italy. Further spread within and between EPPO countries is considered likely. The overall likelihood of A. philoxeroides continuing to enter the EPPO region is medium. It is not clear how this species entered the EPPO region and there are no clear pathways of further introduction, as the species is not widely traded as an aquarium plant or as any other type of living plant material. There may be confusion with A. sessilis, or other Alternanthera species traded for aquarium, ornamental or food purposes. The risk of the species establishing in other EPPO countries is considered high as movement through irrigation and river systems may act to connect countries, facilitating spread regionally, especially through high energy unstable river systems that may encourage fragmentation. Spread may be significantly accelerated by water based recreational activities. The potential high impact of the species within the EPPO region should be considered similar to that seen in other countries where the species has invaded and become established; i.e. Australia and the southern states of North America. Impacts are likely to be more pronounced in countries and regions where the climate most suited to population, establishment, growth and spread

    Replicability and Generalizability of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Networks: A Cross-Cultural Multisite Study of PTSD Symptoms in Four Trauma Patient Samples

    The growing literature conceptualizing mental disorders like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as networks of interacting symptoms faces three key challenges. Prior studies predominantly used (a) small samples with low power for precise estimation, (b) nonclinical samples, and (c) single samples. This renders network structures in clinical data, and the extent to which networks replicate across data sets, unknown. To overcome these limitations, the present cross-cultural multisite study estimated regularized partial correlation networks of 16 PTSD symptoms across four data sets of traumatized patients receiving treatment for PTSD (total N = 2,782). Despite differences in culture, trauma type, and severity of the samples, considerable similarities emerged, with moderate to high correlations between symptom profiles (0.43-0.82), network structures (0.62-0.74), and centrality estimates (0.63-0.75). We discuss the importance of future replicability efforts to improve clinical psychological science and provide code, model output, and correlation matrices to make the results of this article fully reproducible

    Propofol Inhibits Glioma Stem Cell Growth and Migration and Their Interaction with Microglia via BDNF-AS and Extracellular Vesicles

    Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. GBM contains a small subpopulation of glioma stem cells (GSCs) that are implicated in treatment resistance, tumor infiltration, and recurrence, and are thereby considered important therapeutic targets. Recent clinical studies have suggested that the choice of general anesthetic (GA), particularly propofol, during tumor resection, affects subsequent tumor response to treatments and patient prognosis. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying propofol\u27s anti-tumor effects on GSCs and their interaction with microglia cells. Propofol exerted a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the self-renewal, expression of mesenchymal markers, and migration of GSCs and sensitized them to both temozolomide (TMZ) and radiation. At higher concentrations, propofol induced a large degree of cell death, as demonstrated using microfluid chip technology. Propofol increased the expression of the lncRNA BDNF-AS, which acts as a tumor suppressor in GBM, and silencing of this lncRNA partially abrogated propofol\u27s effects. Propofol also inhibited the pro-tumorigenic GSC-microglia crosstalk via extracellular vesicles (EVs) and delivery of BDNF-AS. In conclusion, propofol exerted anti-tumor effects on GSCs, sensitized these cells to radiation and TMZ, and inhibited their pro-tumorigenic interactions with microglia via transfer of BDNF-AS by EVs

However, we have little understanding of their biology and therefore cannot explain this behavior nor what constitutes optimal clinical management. Here we report a comprehensive genetic analysis of an international cohort of clinically annotated infant gliomas, revealing 3 clinical subgroups. Group 1 tumors arise in the cerebral hemispheres and harbor alterations in the receptor tyrosine kinases ALK, ROS1, NTRK and MET. These are typically single-events and confer an intermediate outcome. Groups 2 and 3 gliomas harbor RAS/MAPK pathway mutations and arise in the hemispheres and midline, respectively. Group 2 tumors have excellent long-term survival, while group 3 tumors progress rapidly and do not respond well to chemoradiation.     Career Pathways For First-Generation Students And Parents - Silver Linings In A Pandemic

    This presentation will emphasize projects which insured a successful transition during the pandemic to online services which included laptop and Hot Spot loan programs for low income students. RCSJ Cumberland received a Title V Las Vias grant in 2015, a Title III STEM Pathways grant in 2016 and a NSF Adelante Juntos grant in 2020. These programs enhanced Latinx student success to demonstrate increased Retention and Persistence, and college completion at remarkable rates. Based on the work of these programs, the institution was able to double its Latinx graduation rate within the past 5 years. Their work focuses on developing student persistence, resilience, and leadership for success. These programs collect and share rich data to inform decision making at the institution, and at with sister institutions at conferences. During this pandemic year the college has graduated Latinx students at the highest rates, and students have benefited from the strong, focused and strategic support provided by the Adelante Juntos, Title V Las Vias, and HSI STEM Pathways projects. In this presentation, project leaders will present key innovative interventions which have had the greatest impact on student success including: The Advising Syllabus, Summer Bridge Program, the Peer Mentor program, the Succeeding in College Math series, the use of Social Media to sustain, and enhance student engagement during a pandemic, the World Classroom, the successful transition to online services, online forms, Starfish Success Centers, Instagram Live, Las Vias Advisors Live and other Silver Lining Outcomes

    Abstract To identify a spoken word (e.g., dog), people must categorize the speech steam onto distinct units (e.g., contrast dog/fog,) and extract their combinatorial structure (e.g., distinguish dog/god). However, the mechanisms that support these two core functions are not fully understood. Here, we explore this question using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We show that speech categorization engages the motor system, as stimulating the lip motor area has opposite effects on labial (ba/pa)- and coronal (da/ta) sounds. In contrast, the combinatorial computation of syllable structure engages Broca’s area, as its stimulation disrupts sensitivity to syllable structure (compared to motor stimulation). We conclude that the two ingredients of language—categorization and combination—are distinct functions in human brains
