UID/SOC/04647/2013The object of this paper is to discuss the concept(s) of Design Fiction(s), and to elaborate a critical re-definition of the termsfrom Literary Theory and Narratology’s stand-points. By so doing, it aims to propose a clarification of the types of objects frameable by Design Fiction (DF), and shorten the gap between the latter and Interactive Fiction (IF), IoT (Internet of Things) fictions and AR (Augmented Reality) whenever these practices are being used to tell stories. Smart-houses will be used as an example of successful DF narratives.publishersversionpublishe

Leaf decomposition of cork oak under three different land uses within a montado of southern Portugal

This study compared litter decomposition dynamics of cork oak at three sites under different land-uses (grassland, shrubland and woodland), in a montado ecosystem in Southern Portugal. The montado is a protected habitat within the EU Habitats Directive, but the long-term persistence of cork oak is endangered in these ecosystems, with health of poor cork oak and low natural regeneration rates being the main causes of degradation. Moreover, human management has resulted in the conversion of woodlands to grasslands and may have long-term effects on soil nutrient availability, eventually modifying soil nutrient budgets. Knowledge of the ecological processes is therefore relevant for ecosystem management and species conservation. In the study, the estimated amount of leaf fall from cork oak showed no significant differences between land uses, despite the positive influence of tree crown size on leaf fall. Decomposition was affected by season, vegetation cover, leaf thickness and litter quality. Differences in land use that exposed soil to harsh climate conditions negatively affected soil microbial dynamics, resulting in lower decomposition rates in the more disturbed sites with lower canopy cover. The present work was financed by a PhD grant (SFRH/BD/70708/2010) from FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology). BACKGROUND: dizziness impact on the quality of life (QoL) of elderly patients with chronic vestibular dysfunction. AIM: to evaluate the association between the impact of dizziness on the QoL of elderly patients with chronic vestibular dysfunction and demographic and clinical variables. METHOD: a prospective study. A hundred and twenty elderly patients with chronic vestibular dysfunction underwent the Brazilian version of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). In order to verify the association between the QoL and the demographic and clinical variables, the following testes were used: Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: there were significant associations between the presence of rotating and non-rotating dizziness with the total score of the DHI (p = 0.010) and physical (p = 0.049) and functional (p = 0.009) subscales; between recurrent falls with total DHI (p = 0.004) and physical (p = 0.045), functional (p = 0.010) and emotional (p = 0.011) subscales. Significant correlations were found between functional incapacity and total DHI (r = + 0,557; p < 0.001) and physical (r = + 0,326; p < 0.001), functional (r = + 0,570; p < 0.001) and emotional (r = + 0,521; p < 0.001) subscales. CONCLUSIONS: the impact of dizziness on the QoL is higher in elderly patients with rotating and non-rotating dizziness, recurrent falls and functional incapacity.TEMA: impacto da tontura na qualidade de vida (QV) em idosos vestibulopatas crônicos.

Introduction: Intimate partner violence is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights. It is important to explore the speech of the victim at the time of the complaint. Objective: To analyze the text classification with word cloudas a tool to understand the pattern of patient functioning, complementing the qualitative analysis. Method: It is a text classification study with a word cloud analysis technique, complementing the qualitative analysis. The sample is fifty-six women victims of self-reported domestic violence, who came from a public service in South of Brazil. Results: A word cloud was developed from the speech of the 56 participants. Discussion: The women's discourse in the interviews had focused on understanding what had really happened in their relationship, reporting their abusive situations. Studies using this technique benefit from including heterogeneous patients considering their idiosyncrasies to develop a complex nonlinear pattern relating predictors to the clinical outcome. Conclusion: It was possible to understand the pattern of patient functioning from the text classification tool. The violence or a consequence of it represents internal obstacles of the victim to regulate her emotional experience and stress

The present work compares two 12th grade classes (A and B), whose optional course was Chemistry, using different approaches in AP. The projects themes by the students from control class (A) were freely chosen. In class B, the projects selection was directed to-wards the area of Natural Products Chemistry and a scientific projects development ap-proach was used, under the supervision of the AP teacher, in collaboration with several University Level scientific researchers. The methodology applied to class B lead to a more pronounced knowledge acquisition and it seems to influence student’s choices for undergraduate (college) studies. We can conclude that an approach in which AP is directed towards a higher complemen-tarity with Chemistry seems to result in better learning and motivation in this subject

This final essay on Masters Internship aims to fundament the professional practice with a class of the first cycle, through the contextualization of the practice, the setting of intentions, the learning experiences, the pedagogic principles and grammars that supported the educative options. Overcoming the description and the comprehension of the functioning of the educative practice, we tried to attach this reality to the aim of improving the teaching quality, using the action-investigation to transform the teaching practice in a common joining between practice and theory. After the diagnostic analysis of the class, we find the need in intervening in the process of the reading initiation, motivated by the following aspects: 1) to know the reasons that make children giving up on the reading; 2) to define acting strategies to facilitate reading acquisition process; 3) to define strategies to transform the texts with grammar topics in attractive texts. The study of the action-investigation follows a mainly qualitative methodology, through the direct observation of the educative moments and through interviews made to six students of the class, during the supervised lessons. The results allowed concluding that for the students don’t give up on the reading, it is essential to use models/methods of reading initiation that their real individual needs. One realized that through the practice of creative and cooperative methodologies in the learning of reading, students show a bigger involvement in it what facilitates the development of their reading skills. The first readings depend on the originality of the teacher to transform learning texts in texts that defy the artistic creativity of the pupils. The use of dramatic and musical games as the use of drawing, prove themselves essential to the construction of a good reader
