The Use of Software Design Patterns to Teach Secure Software Design: An Integrated Approach
Part 2: Software Security EducationInternational audienceDuring software development, security is often dealt with as an add-on. This means that security considerations are not necessarily seen as an integral part of the overall solution and might even be left out of a design. For many security problems, the approach towards secure development has recurring elements. Software design patterns are often used to address a commonly occurring problem through a “generic” approach towards this problem. The design pattern provides a conceptual model of a best-practices solution, which in turn is used by developers to create a concrete implementation for their specific problem. Most software design patterns do not include security best-practices as part of the generic solution towards the commonly occurring problem. This paper proposes an extension to the widely used MVC pattern that includes current security principles in order to teach secure software design in an integrated fashion

The structure of paranoia in the general population
Background
Psychotic phenomena appear to form a continuum with normal experience and beliefs, and may build on common emotional interpersonal concerns.
Aims
We tested predictions that paranoid ideation is exponentially distributed and hierarchically arranged in the general population, and that persecutory ideas build on more common cognitions of mistrust, interpersonal sensitivity and ideas of reference.
Method
Items were chosen from the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (SCID-II) questionnaire and the Psychosis Screening Questionnaire in the second British National Survey of Psychiatric Morbidity (n = 8580), to test a putative hierarchy of paranoid development using confirmatory factor analysis, latent class analysis and factor mixture modelling analysis.
Results
Different types of paranoid ideation ranged in frequency from less than 2% to nearly 30%. Total scores on these items followed an almost perfect exponential distribution (r = 0.99). Our four a priori first-order factors were corroborated (interpersonal sensitivity; mistrust; ideas of reference; ideas of persecution). These mapped onto four classes of individual respondents: a rare, severe, persecutory class with high endorsement of all item factors, including persecutory ideation; a quasi-normal class with infrequent endorsement of interpersonal sensitivity, mistrust and ideas of reference, and no ideas of persecution; and two intermediate classes, characterised respectively by relatively high endorsement of items relating to mistrust and to ideas of reference.
Conclusions
The paranoia continuum has implications for the aetiology, mechanisms and treatment of psychotic disorders, while confirming the lack of a clear distinction from normal experiences and processes
The First Detection of Blue Straggler Stars in the Milky Way Bulge
We report the first detections of Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) in the bulge of
the Milky Way galaxy. Proper motions from extensive space-based observations
along a single sight-line allow us to separate a sufficiently clean and
well-characterized bulge sample that we are able to detect a small population
of bulge objects in the region of the color-magnitude diagram commonly occupied
young objects and blue strgglers. However, variability measurements of these
objects clearly establish that a fraction of them are blue stragglers. Out of
the 42 objects found in this region of the color-magnitude diagram, we estimate
that at least 18 are genuine BSS. We normalize the BSS population by our
estimate of the number of horizontal branch stars in the bulge in order to
compare the bulge to other stellar systems. The BSS fraction is clearly
discrepant from that found in stellar clusters. The blue straggler population
of dwarf spheroidals remains a subject of debate; some authors claim an
anticorrelation between the normalised blue straggler fraction and integrated
light. If this trend is real, then the bulge may extend it by three orders of
magnitude in mass. Conversely, we find that the genuinely young (~5Gy or
younger) population in the bulge, must be at most 3.4% under the most

Perception of Relative Depth Interval: Systematic Biases in Perceived Depth
Given an estimate of the binocular disparity between a pair of points and an estimate of the viewing distance, or knowledge of eye position, it should be possible to obtain an estimate of their depth separation. Here we show that, when points are arranged in different vertical geometric configurations across two intervals, many observers find this task difficult. Those who can do the task tend to perceive the depth interval in one configuration as very different from depth in the other configuration. We explore two plausible explanations for this effect. The first is the tilt of the empirical vertical horopter: Points perceived along an apparently vertical line correspond to a physical line of points tilted backwards in space. Second, the eyes can rotate in response to a particular stimulus. Without compensation for this rotation, biases in depth perception would result. We measured cyclovergence indirectly, using a standard psychophysical task, while observers viewed our depth configuration. Biases predicted from error due either to cyclovergence or to the tilted vertical horopter were not consistent with the depth configuration results. Our data suggest that, even for the simplest scenes, we do not have ready access to metric depth from binocular disparity.</jats:p
Accounting for the increasing benefits from scarce ecosystems
Governments are catching up with economic theory and practice by increasingly integrating ecosystem service values into national planning processes, including benefitcost analyses of public policies. Such analyses require information not only about today’s benefits from ecosystem services but also on how benefits change over time. We address a key limitation of existing policy guidance, which assumes that benefits from ecosystem services remain unchanged. We provide a practical rule that is grounded in economic theory and evidence-based as a guideline for how benefits change over time: They rise as societies get richer and even more so when ecosystem services are declining. Our proposal will correct a substantial downward bias in currently used estimates of future ecosystem service values. This will help governments to reflect the importance of ecosystems more accurately in benefit-cost analyses and policy decisions they inform
The Milky Way Bulge: Observed properties and a comparison to external galaxies
The Milky Way bulge offers a unique opportunity to investigate in detail the
role that different processes such as dynamical instabilities, hierarchical
merging, and dissipational collapse may have played in the history of the
Galaxy formation and evolution based on its resolved stellar population
properties. Large observation programmes and surveys of the bulge are providing
for the first time a look into the global view of the Milky Way bulge that can
be compared with the bulges of other galaxies, and be used as a template for
detailed comparison with models. The Milky Way has been shown to have a
box/peanut (B/P) bulge and recent evidence seems to suggest the presence of an
additional spheroidal component. In this review we summarise the global
chemical abundances, kinematics and structural properties that allow us to
disentangle these multiple components and provide constraints to understand
their origin. The investigation of both detailed and global properties of the
bulge now provide us with the opportunity to characterise the bulge as observed
in models, and to place the mixed component bulge scenario in the general
context of external galaxies. When writing this review, we considered the
perspectives of researchers working with the Milky Way and researchers working
with external galaxies. It is an attempt to approach both communities for a

Study of valence neutrons in \u3csup\u3e136\u3c/sup\u3eXe with HELIOS
The single-neutron adding (d,p) reaction has been performed on 136Xe in inverse kinematics at 10 MeV/u. The position, time-of-flight, and energy of the outgoing protons were analyzed by the new helical orbit spectrometer, HELIOS, at Argonne National Laboratory. An excitation-energy resolution of ≲100 keV was obtained in the outgoing proton spectra. The experimental setup is described, along with a technique of extracting absolute cross sections. Data are shown which illustrate the performance of the device. This measurement clearly demonstrates the potential of HELIOS for future heavy radioactive-beam studies
