BOOK REVIEW ISLAM AND ECOLOGY: A BESTOWED TRUST
The themes of this hefty tome, consisting of twenty-three essays, preceded by prefaces and introductions, are closely connected with the May 1998 conference on Islam and ecology, which was held in the framework of a series of gatherings on the stance of the worldâs religious traditions towards todayâs environmental crisis, hosted by the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University between 1996 and 1998. The editors of this volume must be credited with giving the contributors opportunity to present the most up-to-date essays, which must have been quite a strain on the editing process of an ambitious project like this
PaLM 2 Technical Report
We introduce PaLM 2, a new state-of-the-art language model that has better
multilingual and reasoning capabilities and is more compute-efficient than its
predecessor PaLM. PaLM 2 is a Transformer-based model trained using a mixture
of objectives. Through extensive evaluations on English and multilingual
language, and reasoning tasks, we demonstrate that PaLM 2 has significantly
improved quality on downstream tasks across different model sizes, while
simultaneously exhibiting faster and more efficient inference compared to PaLM.
This improved efficiency enables broader deployment while also allowing the
model to respond faster, for a more natural pace of interaction. PaLM 2
demonstrates robust reasoning capabilities exemplified by large improvements
over PaLM on BIG-Bench and other reasoning tasks. PaLM 2 exhibits stable
performance on a suite of responsible AI evaluations, and enables
inference-time control over toxicity without additional overhead or impact on
other capabilities. Overall, PaLM 2 achieves state-of-the-art performance
across a diverse set of tasks and capabilities.
When discussing the PaLM 2 family, it is important to distinguish between
pre-trained models (of various sizes), fine-tuned variants of these models, and
the user-facing products that use these models. In particular, user-facing
products typically include additional pre- and post-processing steps.
Additionally, the underlying models may evolve over time. Therefore, one should
not expect the performance of user-facing products to exactly match the results
reported in this report
Genetic Drivers of Heterogeneity in Type 2 Diabetes Pathophysiology
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes1,2 and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type3,4. Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D. We identify 1,289 independent association signals at genome-wide significance (P \u3c 5 Ă 10-8) that map to 611 loci, of which 145 loci are, to our knowledge, previously unreported. We define eight non-overlapping clusters of T2D signals that are characterized by distinct profiles of cardiometabolic trait associations. These clusters are differentially enriched for cell-type-specific regions of open chromatin, including pancreatic islets, adipocytes, endothelial cells and enteroendocrine cells. We build cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores5 in a further 279,552 individuals of diverse ancestry, including 30,288 cases of T2D, and test their association with T2D-related vascular outcomes. Cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores are associated with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and end-stage diabetic nephropathy across ancestry groups, highlighting the importance of obesity-related processes in the development of vascular outcomes. Our findings show the value of integrating multi-ancestry genome-wide association study data with single-cell epigenomics to disentangle the aetiological heterogeneity that drives the development and progression of T2D. This might offer a route to optimize global access to genetically informed diabetes care

Improved reference genome of Aedes aegypti informs arbovirus vector control
Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infect more than 400 million people each year with dangerous viral pathogens including dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya. Progress in understanding the biology of mosquitoes and developing the tools to fight them has been slowed by the lack of a high-quality genome assembly. Here we combine diverse technologies to produce the markedly improved, fully re-annotated AaegL5 genome assembly, and demonstrate how it accelerates mosquito science. We anchored physical and cytogenetic maps, doubled the number of known chemosensory ionotropic receptors that guide mosquitoes to human hosts and egg-laying sites, provided further insight into the size and composition of the sex-determining M locus, and revealed copy-number variation among glutathione S-transferase genes that are important for insecticide resistance. Using high-resolution quantitative trait locus and population genomic analyses, we mapped new candidates for dengue vector competence and insecticide resistance. AaegL5 will catalyse new biological insights and intervention strategies to fight this deadly disease vector
Humanity as the ground for universal human rights in Islamic law
A legal maxim in Islamic law states that âThe right to inviolability (âisma) is due for humanity (adamiyya)â. The right to inviolability includes inviolability ofthe right to (1) life, (2) property, (3) religion, (4) mind (expression), (5) family andprogeny, as well as (6) honor and dignity. Universalist Muslim jurists share thisview from different schools of Islamic law. In particular, all jurists from the H.anafÂŻischool subscribe to this view. From this perspective being human is sufïŹcient tohave human rights regardless of innate, inherited and gained attributes such as sex,religion, race and nationality. This article explores the thought of Muslim juristswho took humanity as the sufïŹcient ground for human rights and the arguments theyused to justify it by deriving from classical Islamic law books. It will also provide ahistorical survey about how this view was implemented in Islamic history from Indiato the Balkans under Islamic law. Following it will discuss the reforms in Islamic lawduring the late Ottoman period (1839â1918). It will conclude by proposing how thepresent Muslim legal and political discourse can be re-connected to this universalisthuman rights tradition to overcome the challenges for human rights in the Muslimworld today
