    An Environmental Study of the Origin, Distribution, and Bioaccumulation of Selenium in Kentucky and Barkley Lakes

    Many samples of water, bottom sediment, and fish were analyzed for toxic metal ion content. The samples were collected from several selected sites along Kentucky and Barkley Lakes as well as the Cumberland River and several sub-impoundments along these aquatic systems. Emphasis was placed on selenium, although several other metal ions were determined. The results showed that there are no serious pollution problems with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Se, Sr, Zn, or Zr at any of the sites examined. Actually, none of the trace metals examined even come close to the EPA limits on fish, with the exception of lead in the White Crappie and mercury in the Bass. There appears to be no serious problem with lead in White Crappie as only two fish out of a total of nineteen were above the limit of 2 PPM. The same holds for mercury in the bass as only three fish out of thirty four were above the 0.5 PPM level. Water and sediment analyses for the above mentioned metal ions fell well within expected normal limits for unpolluted fresh water systems. No point sources could be identified for any of the metal ions. This is in contrast with results obtained on the lower Tennessee River by Hancock, et al. in which a large chemical complex was found to contribute significant quantities of trace metals. No significant seasonal variation of trace element content was observed in any of the sample types. Since the selenium content of all samples was so low, no laboratory bioaccumulation data were obtained. No general correlation between fish length and trace element content could be established, although there was a relationship for some elements, usually positive but sometimes negative. There was some correlation between trace element content and area and between elemental content and species of fish. However, these relationships are complex and depend on the trace element studied. The most important conclusion to be drawn from this study is that at this time there appears to be little problem with trace metal pollution in Kentucky and Barkley Lakes

    A Deep Radio Survey of Abell 2125 III: The Cluster Core - Merging and Stripping

    We use radio, near-IR, optical, and X-ray observations to examine dynamic processes in the central region of Abell 2125. In addition to the central triple, including members of both major dynamical subsystems identified from a redshift survey, this region features a galaxy showing strong evidence for ongoing gas stripping during a high-velocity passage through the gas in the cluster core. The disk galaxy C153 exhibits a plume stretching toward the cluster center seen in soft X-rays by Chandra, parts of which are also seen in [O II] emission and near-UV continuum light. HST imaging shows a distorted disk, with star-forming knots asymmetrically distributed and remnant spiral structure possibly defined by dust lanes. The stars and ionized gas in its disk are kinematically decoupled, demonstrating that pressure stripping must be important, and that tidal disruption is not the only mechanism at work. Comparison of the gas properties seen in the X-ray and optical data on the plume highlight significant features of the history of stripped gas in the intracluster medium. The nucleus of C153 also hosts an AGN, shown by the weak and distorted extended radio emission and a radio compact core. The unusual strength of the stripping signatures in this instance is likely related to the high relative velocity of the galaxy with respect to the intracluster medium, during a cluster/cluster merger, and its passage very near the core of the cluster. Another sign of recent dynamical events is diffuse starlight asymmetrically placed about the central triple in a cD envelope.     Observation of a Large Atomic Parity Violation Effect in Ytterbium

    Atomic parity violation has been observed in the 6s^2 1S0 - 5d6s 3D1 408-nm forbidden transition of ytterbium. The parity-violating amplitude is found to be two orders of magnitude larger than in cesium, where the most precise experiments to date have been performed. This is in accordance with theoretical predictions and constitutes the largest atomic parity-violating amplitude yet observed. This also opens the way to future measurements of neutron skins and anapole moments by comparing parity-violating amplitudes for various isotopes and hyperfine components of the transition

    We describe deep, new, wide-field radio continuum observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey -- North (GOODS-N) field. The resulting map has a synthesized beamsize of ~1.7" and an r.m.s. noise level of ~3.9uJy/bm near its center and ~8uJy/bm at 15', from phase center. We have cataloged 1,230 discrete radio emitters, within a 40' x 40' region, above a 5-sigma detection threshold of ~20uJy at the field center. New techniques, pioneered by Owen & Morrison (2008), have enabled us to achieve a dynamic range of 6800:1 in a field that has significantly strong confusing sources. We compare the 1.4-GHz (20-cm) source counts with those from other published radio surveys. Our differential counts are nearly Euclidean below 100uJy with a median source diameter of ~1.2". This adds to the evidence presented by Owen & Morrison (2008) that the natural confusion limit may lie near ~1uJy. If the Euclidean slope of the counts continues down to the natural confusion limit as an extrapolation of our log N - log S, this indicates that the cutoff must be fairly sharp below 1uJy else the cosmic microwave background temperature would increase above 2.7K at 1.4 GHz.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 16 pages, 19 figures.     The Far-Infrared/Radio Correlation in Nearby Abell Clusters

    A comprehensive study of the effect of the cluster environment on the far- infrared (FIR)/radio correlation in nearby Abell clusters is presented. Using the cluster radio galaxy database from Miller & Owen (2001) and optical spectroscopy and high resolution radio images to remove AGN, we assess the FIR/radio correlation of cluster galaxies from the centers of the clusters out well past the classical Abell radius. The FIR/radio correlation is shown to hold quite well for star forming galaxies, and the FIR and radio fluxes for cluster AGN are also well correlated. In the case of AGN, the relative radio- to-FIR fluxes are greater and the scatter in the correlation is larger than those seen for star forming galaxies. We also find that there is a rare but statistically significant excess of star forming galaxies with enhanced radio emission in the centers of the clusters, and that the degree of this enhancement is typically a factor of two or three. The FIR/radio correlation for cluster star forming galaxies is also tested against line-of-sight velocity relative to the cluster systemic velocities, but no significant correlation is found. While the radial dependence of the FIR/radio correlation is consistent with the model wherein ram pressure increases the cluster galaxies' magnetic field strengths through compression, the velocity data do not confirm this model. Although a contribution from ram pressure can not be ruled out, the thermal pressure due to the ICM alone is an equally viable alternative. The high resolution radio images largely reject the hypothesis that the increased radio emission arises from an AGN component, strengthening the claim that the change in the correlation is caused by a change in the environment of the galaxies.Comment: 26 pages, including 5 figures (uses AASTeX 5.0).     1. The rate of elongation and thickening of individual branches (shoots) varies across plant species. This variation is important for the outcome of competition and other plant-plant interactions. Here we compared rates of shoot growth across 44 species from tropical, warm temperate, and cool temperate forests of eastern Australia.2. Shoot growth rate was found to correlate with a suite of traits including the potential height of the species, xylem-specific conductivity, leaf size, leaf area per xylem cross-section, twig diameter (at 40 cm length), wood density and modulus of elasticity.3.     Upcoming wide-field spectroscopic surveys will observe galaxies in a range of cosmic web environments in and around galaxy clusters. In this paper, we test and quantify how successfully we will be able to identify the environment of individual galaxies in the vicinity of massive galaxy clusters, reaching out to 5R200\sim5R_{200} into the clusters' infall region. We focus on the WEAVE Wide Field Cluster Survey (WWFCS), but the methods we develop can be easily generalised to any similar spectroscopic survey. Using numerical simulations of a large sample of massive galaxy clusters from \textsc{TheThreeHundred} project, we produce mock observations that take into account the selection effects and observational constraints imposed by the WWFCS. We then compare the `true' environment of each galaxy derived from the simulations (cluster core, filament, and neither core nor filament, {``NCF''}) with the one derived from the observational data, where only galaxy sky positions and spectroscopic redshifts will be available. We find that, while cluster core galaxy samples can be built with a high level of completeness and moderate contamination, the filament and NCF galaxy samples will be significantly contaminated and incomplete due to projection effects exacerbated by the galaxies' peculiar velocities. We conclude that, in the infall regions surrounding massive galaxy clusters, associating galaxies with the correct cosmic web environment is highly uncertain. However, with large enough spectroscopic samples like the ones the WWFCS will provide (thousands of galaxies per cluster, {out to 5R2005R_{200}}), and the correct statistical treatment that takes into account the probabilities we provide here, we expect we will be able to extract robust and well-quantified conclusions on the relationship between galaxy properties and their environment.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (14 pages, 7 figures
